Europe 2019 (Pt. 66) - Walkabout of Belfast, Northern Ireland (UK)
August 12, 2019 - Welcome to Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, one of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom! We arrived nice and early at about Noon today, so had plenty of time to explore the city before the weather turned. It's a very compact downtown core, thus very walkable - even when our hotel (near the Assembly Buildings) is on the fringe of downtown.
Catch a glimpse of the following sights: the Assembly Buildings, Belfast City Hall, Victoria Square, Castle Court, and the Grand Opera House.
Eateries along the way where the very patriotic Canadian institution of Tim Horton's (new in Northern Ireland in 2018), the most-bomed hotel in European history, The Europa (great place for dinner!), and the very ornate Crown Bar across the street, a perfect place to come on a Monday evening such as this for a pint of Guinness.
Cheers, Belfast!

NIGHT OUT IN BELFAST l The Journey_018
In this Vlog, I swap Protein Shakes for Vodka Shots...
It was great to have a couple of my best mates over from England to celebrate my birthday for a night out in Belfast!
An important message from this week's vlog:
Learn to adopt a lifestyle approach to your diet.
Dieting and Weight Loss shouldn't be overly restrictive whereby you don't drink or even eat a slice of birthday cake out of fear of 'ruining your diet'.
Nor should it be the other end of the spectrum where you sit on your arse all day eating jaffa-cakes watching Breaking Bad marathon.
You can go out, drink alcohol, get a nasty kebab at the end of the night and still lose weight just so long as you don't do it too often and consider the bigger picture (overall calorie deficit!)
Enjoy!

NORTHERN IRELAND: BELFAST: ST PATRICK'S DAY CELEBRATED
English/Nat
Thousands of Catholics participated in the first-ever St. Patrick's day parade in Belfast on Tuesday.
St. Patrick is honored throughout the Republic of Ireland every year for his role in bringing Catholicism to the country.
But such a parade had never been staged before in the largely Protestant city in Northern Ireland.
In a break from the past, participants in Belfast's first St. Patrick's Day parade marched peacefully on Tuesday to the tunes of local reggae singers and a visiting Brazilian salsa band.
There were images of Celtic witches, bulls and snakes - the ones said to have been banished from Ireland 16 centuries ago by its patron saint.
In an effort to include every constituency, organisers allowed all types of marchers - from festively decked-out young children to a group demanding the release of Irish Republican Army (I-R-A) prisoners.
Good weather led to an estimated ten-thousand people turning out for the festivities.
But there was little involvement from Protestants, whose favoured patriotic colour is orange not green, and who fly the British flag.
With Belfast's mayor, Alban McGuinness, in Washington, D-C for a meeting with President Clinton, his wife kicked off the ceremonies.

Happy St. Patrick's Day (cheers from crowd).

Despite the troubles which have plagued Northern Ireland, the message was clear - lets party!
Many people recognised that event was successful because of the current efforts towards peace.

Q: Are you enjoying St. Patrick's day?
A: We are indeed.
Q: Is this the first time you've had it like this in Belfast?
A. This is the first time in the city centre
Q. Why do you think that is?
A. It's just a change really, that's it. Probably the cease-fire helped it out a bit anyway.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
We are a happy bunch of people. And we like to enjoy ourselves too, along with the rest of the world.

Many Catholics were happy to have their own public event in Belfast.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It just means that everyone can be together. And celebrate together. It makes a change from, like, the twelfth, when it's just the other side, but now you can get together more and all sides can do it. It's a good laugh, it's going real well, it's a brilliant turn out.

All types of dances were performed, adding colour and excitement to an often depressed city.
The event was not without its critics.
Many took offence to the I-R-A sympathisers and the welcome given to a contingent from Belfast's chapter of Gay Pride.
But event organiser Catriona Ruane defended their inclusion.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Well this parade was for all communities. It was for the Gay community, the Lesbian community, the people with disabilities, the Protestant community, the Nationalist community, and people from all different ethnic minorities that live here. We're very happy with who turned out, this was the first parade ever in the city centre for St. Patrick's Day. We'll be building on this for next year and the year after.
SUPER CAPTION: Catriona Ruane, Parade Organiser
The successful parade takes on special significance in light of the Northern Ireland peace talks taking place in Belfast, and Washington.

My Self Guided Tour Round Dundonald Cemetery Belfast.
( Wesley Thompson local East Belfast historian has written a wonderful History of Dundonald Cemetery entitled, 'If Stones could speak. I'm not sure how you might come by this history but I recommend contacting East Belfast Historical Society. )
I live under 2 miles away from Dundonald Cemetery, Upper Newtownards Road Belfast, yet I have never been in it until today. I was surprised at how large it turned out to be. I reckon it must be in the top 3 biggest Belfast cemeteries as regards size/numbers of graves.
Dundonald Cemetery opened as a municipal burial ground in 1905. n 1895, Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council) realised that more burial space was needed to cope with the city's growing population. Two years later, it bought 45 acres of land at Ballymiscaw, Dundonald, for £5,600. The site was known locally as Donall’s Fortress because of a nearby fort.
In 1904, plots were allocated out and a quarter of the cemetery was set aside for Roman Catholic burials, a decision which was later revised.
There are no new grave plots available in the cemetery, but burials still take place in existing graves.
Dundonald Cemetery in a Commonwealth War Grave. There are around 100 servicemen buried here from WW1 and WW2 in particular.
The entrance to the cemetery is marked by an imposing set of black and gold double gates. At the highest point stands a grey limestone war memorial ( the Cross of Sacrifice ), around five metres high. It is embedded with large bronze Excalibur-type swords which form the shape of a cross at the top of the monument.
The engraving below them reads: This cross of sacrifice is one in design and intention with those which have been set up in France and Belgium and other places throughout the world where our dead of the Great War are laid to rest. Their name liveth for evermore.
Famous burials
John Carey (1861-1943) – landscape artist
Sir Thomas Dixon (1868-1950) - High Sheriff for Co. Antrim in 1912 and Co. Down in 1913. Dixon also served as Lord-Lieutenant of the County Borough of Belfast between 1924 and 1950
Lady Edith Stewart Dixon (1871-1964) - wife of Sir Thomas Dixon. Lady Dixon was made a Dame of the British Empire for her work with soldiers during World War I. She donated her family estate, now Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park, to the people of Belfast. The Dixons are buried in section B3 of the cemetery and their grave is marked with a very large, imposing black granite memorial
Dr Thomas Fleming Stevenson Fulton (1887-1974) - founder of Fleming Fulton School.
Oscar Heron (died 1953) - famous gypsy horse dealer
John McCandless (died 1913) - managing director of Belfast Ropeworks Ltd
Sir Frederick Ernest Rebbeck (1877-1964) - chairman of Harland and Wolff from 1930 to 1962
William John Stewart (1868-1946) - MP for south Belfast.
