Wikipedia
Leavenworth is a city in Chelan County, Washington, United States. It is part of the Wenatchee−East Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,965 at the 2010 census. The entire town center is modeled on a Bavarian village as part of a civic initiative that began in the 1960s. The area is a major tourist destination during the wintertime.
The railroad construction was completed during the winter of 1893. Lafayette Lamb arrived in 1903 from Clinton, Iowa to build the second largest sawmill in Washington state.
Leavenworth was officially incorporated on September 5, 1906. A small timber community, it became the headquarters of the Great Northern Railway in the early 1900s. The railroad relocated to Wenatchee in the 1920s, greatly affecting Leavenworth's economy.
In 1962, the Project LIFE (Leavenworth Improvement For Everyone) Committee was formed in partnership with the University of Washington to investigate strategies to revitalize the struggling logging town. The theme town idea was created by two Seattle businessmen, Ted Price and Bob Rodgers, who had bought a failing cafe on Highway 2 in 1960. Price was chair of the Project LIFE tourism subcommittee, and in 1965 the pair led a trip to a Danish-themed town, Solvang, California, to build support for the idea. The first building to be remodeled in the Bavarian style was the Chikamin Hotel, which owner Jamie Peterson renamed the Edelweiss after the state flower of Bavaria.
Leavenworth is home to the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, which opened in 1995 and contains more than 5,000 nutcrackers dating from prehistoric to modern. Leavenworth hosts an annual Oktoberfest celebration. Leavenworth's transformation into a theme town was inspired, and assisted, by Solvang, California. Later, the Washington town of Winthrop followed Leavenworth's example and adopted a Western town theme.
In November 2007, Good Morning America went to Leavenworth for Holiday Gifts for the Globe where GMA helped light up the town for the Christmas Holiday. Leavenworth was also named the Ultimate Holiday Town USA by A&E

Leavenworth Washington - Hikes, Lakes, and Bavarian Town
Taking in the Bavarian town of Leavenworth, Washington and the surrounding region. We hiked to Colchuck Lake as well as The Pinnacles and Lake Chelan.
Leavenworth is a Bavarian Town located in Washington State. The town was a hotspot for logging in the late 1800's, however due to many avalanches and destruction to train tracks over time, the industry moved to other areas of the state. Leavenworth re-branded the town and focussed on tourism, becoming a Bavarian-themed town in the USA.
The town is located in the centre of snow-peaked mountains and alpine lakes. It also has many wineries as it is in a warm valley near Wenatchee. There are many mountain hikes to beautiful lakes in the region. The Enchantments trail boasts some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States and has multiple green and light blue lakes. We only got to see Colchuck Lake due to the time of year, however the Enchantments is doable in a day.
Lake Chelan is located about an hour outside of Leavenworth and is a great spot to enjoy a summer day and picnic. Drive up above the lake for a stunning view of the valley and lakes below like we did!
The Pinnacles are rock formations about 15 minutes outside of the town of Leavenworth and are a great spot to view the wineries of Leavenworth. These formations stretch high in the sky and are perfect for rock climbers and hikers alike.
