London Youth Games Cycling at Lee Valley Velo Park
Hackney picked up two individual medals on their way to winning the overall team Gold at the London Youth Games Road Cycling event on Saturday.
More than 180 riders from 22 London boroughs took part in the six cycling events at Lee Valley Velo-Park this weekend.
Sam Bardill’s bronze in the road race and a time trial silver for Anouska Minale helped the borough to take the overall title, with Southwark in second and Wandsworth third.
Hackney’s team leader Kier Appleby praised his 15-strong team and said: “We had a talk before this final, and we said it is all about teamwork.
“I told them I’ll go home happy and we’ll all go home happy if they’ve shown teamwork.
“It’s not just about sport, it’s that anything worth achieving in life is all about teamwork, so thank you to everyone involved.
The youngsters competed in male and female time trials and road races, with awards given to the top three in each event, plus a trophy to the best performing borough.
In the male AB time trial, Leo Hayter from Lambeth took the gold medal with a time of 08:52.6. Second place went to Southwark’s Innes Harvey who finished in 09:25.3, just 1.3 seconds faster than bronze medallist Peter Hewson from Ealing. 53 athletes competed from across 22 London boroughs.
Leo, 15, was delighted to beat his rivals to gold. He said: “I had hopes to win because I felt good. I was happy to take 50 seconds off my time from last time.
“Through the long straight it was really windy. I really felt the effort at the end, I was nearly crying, but I’m happy to win.”
Out of the 42 riders competing in the female AB time trial, Eva Callinan from Kingston upon Thames won in 10:03:303. Hackney’s Anouska Minale set a time of 10:02:017 for second place, with Katie Wootton from Haringey third in 10:06:149.
Eva, 13, acknowledged her parents role in her success.
She said: “My dad has helped me a lot, he supplies my bike, he trains with me, he gives me training plans and he drives me absolutely everywhere, so I couldn’t do it without him. Both of my parents and my family have been really supportive.”
Bexley’s Max Capamagian was triumphant in the Male CDE Time Trial, finishing the two-lap course in 5:23:718 at the head of the 55-strong field.
Second was Christo Chilton from Wandsworth, finishing 1.976 seconds behind, whilst Billy Bancroft from Lambeth took the bronze medal in 5:31:707.
Max, 11, said: “It felt hard on the legs and because of the crosswinds and headwinds and tailwinds it was pretty hard going round the course. I had to think a lot about my race management and things like that.”
Sutton rider Phoeobe Roche clinched the Female CDE Time Trial title, clocking a time of 5:33.603, with City of London’s Millie Coleman second and Kingston upon Thames’ Maisy Jensen coming third, 15.759 seconds off the lead.
After claiming her medal, Phoebe said: “This is my first full year cycling so it was really cool to win. I enjoy the excitement, the speed and the surprise of winning.”
In the male road race, Peter Hewson took his second podium of the day with victory, whilst Bromley’s Irfran Zaman and Hackney’s Sam Bardill rounded out the top three.
Haringey’s Katie Wootton won a bunch sprint in the female road race, with Natalie Bloomer of Southwark taking silver and and Bromley’s Sannah Zaman in bronze.
