ART TALK: The legend of Raja Ravi Varma
The path-breaking art - and riveting story - of legendary painter, Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906). Ravi Varma expert, Rupika Chawla, gives fascinating insights into some of the artist's most important works. Ravi Varma was the first Indian artist to paint Hindu deities in a 'realistic' manner using oil paints. His paintings of Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and scenes from the scriptures have captured the visual imagination of India for decades. He is also famous for his paintings of royalty and the rich with fine detailing of clothing, jewellery and expressions. Rupika Chawla is on Art Talk with Jujhar Singh (NewsX channel).
Art Talk is the leading arts show on Indian news television. The show carries interview - demonstrations with the top musicians, dancers, artists and photographers of the country - and the best emerging talent as well. The aim of the show is to demystify the arts, particularly the classical and fine arts, and show how beautiful, exciting and spiritual they are.

Artists pay tribute to Sachin Tendulkar at contemporary art exhibition in Bengaluru
Bengaluru, Aug 11 (ANI): Almost two years after cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar retired from the sport, 10 artists showcased the legend's journey at a contemporary art exhibition in Bengaluru. The exhibition at the National Gallery of Modern Art, titled 'Deconstructing Innings', pays an artistic tribute to the innings of Tendulkar - the man credited with changing the face of Indian cricket. One of the main attractions at the exhibition was an art work called 'City of Dreams' - which depicts Tendulkar's feat of scoring 100 centuries - through a structure emulating Mumbai's skyline with city's Wankedhe stadium in the backdrop. In the first phase of his life, Tendulkar proved his extraordinary credentials. By 1997-98 Tendulkar had reached the peak of his powers. Other art works at the exhibition includes Tendulkar's batting grips from each of his 100 centuries and the one rupee coins that Tendulkar received from his coach Ramakant Achrekar for not getting run-out during his practice sessions. Another much appreciated art work at the exhibition was a picture which showed baby Tendulkar playing as divine beings look on. Another visitor, Doctor KN Ravi lauded the attention paid to minute details of Tendulkar's life.

SEBASTIAN VARGHESE
My work emerges from landscape visuals and its various derivations. Land goes through tremendous changes. After years of socio-political and cultural transformations, the organic and architectural skin of the land has been layered with numerous stories. Remnants and relics hidden under the epithelial layer of the land breathe in and breathe out memories. Incessant time transforms dead trees into coal and sometimes into diamonds. Similarly memories recalled transport us into the world of myths and legends. We are the part of an ongoing shadow-play of erasure and excavation of these memories. Life as we feel it arises and passes away every moment. We enter in this stream and then transform. But the ancient lands of the planet remain as a silent witness, always. As an art practitioner I try to be an observer who explores and reflects both the tranquility and its disruptions.
I completed BFA, majoring in painting from College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum, University of Kerala, India and share my time between India and the US. I participate in various camps and shows in both the countries. My mediums are watercolor, acrylic, oil, photography, video and print.

Balkrishna V. Doshi: 27th Annual Architecture Lecture
Professor Balkrishna V. Doshi is a living legend in contemporary architectural history. Since working as a senior designer for Le Corbusier in the ‘50s and supervising his projects in Ahmedabad and Chandigarh, he has developed an extraordinary body of work with his practice Vastu-Shilpa as one of the pioneers of low-cost housing and modern city planning in India. Over almost 70 years of practice, research and teaching, he has created a wide range of projects which demonstrate an exceptional level of environmental and community awareness, adopting modern architectural principles and adapting them to local Indian traditions, resources and context.
Some of his most relevant projects include his own studio Sangath in Ahmedabad (1979-80) and both public and private cultural and educational facilities, such as the Ahmedabad School of Architecture (1966-68), the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore (1977-83), the Gandhi Labour Institute in Ahmedabad (1980-84), the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi (1989) and the experimental Amdavad ni Gufa Art Gallery (1992-95). Balkrishna V. Doshi’s projects also expand to residential architecture. He has executed numerous commissions for low-cost housing in industrial townships such as the Indian Farmers Fertilisers Cooperative in Kalol (1970-73) or the Aranya Community Housing in Indore (1988), which also received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995.
Coinciding with the 90th birthday of Balkrishna V. Doshi and the 70th anniversary of Indian independence, we had the pleasure of welcoming this legendary architect to the RA to talk about a lifelong career transforming Indian culture and tradition.
Raja Ravi Varma: Royal Lithography and Legacy
Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906), a prolific Indian painter, in addition to painting in the academic and realistic style was also responsible for the propagation of art by printing Chromolithographs. In this way, Varma made art accessible to the common man. Artistic representation was no longer the exclusive and elusive domain of the aristocratic segment of the society. Raja Ravi Varma was therefore responsible for democratizing art. Raja Ravi Varma established the Ravi Varma Fine Art
Lithographic Press in 1894 at Bombay (present day Mumbai) with Raja Raja Varma (his brother) as proprietor. Varma employed a German, Fritz Schleicher, to be in charge of technical aspects. The artistic aspects were supervised of Raja Raja Varma, M. V. Dhurandhar (Mahadev Vishwanath Dhurandhar: 1867-1944) and M.A. Joshi. The Ravi Varma Fine Art Lithographic Press commenced its work with the printing of a lithograph entitled Birth of Shakuntala (Shakuntala Janm).
The Ravi Varma Fine Art Lithographic Press was thereafter moved
to Ghatkopar, Bombay, due to onset of plague and civil unrest. The
Press however was embroiled in financial irregularities which were
finally mitigated by the purchase of an investor’s share. The Varma
brothers finally decided to relocate the press to Malavali near Lonavala and the relocation process commenced in 1899. By 1901, the Varma brothers were steeped in debt and decided to sell the press. Finally on 9 th November 1903, the press was sold to Schleicher.
When all of Bangalore's art lovers gathered at Chitra Sante
What makes thousands of Bangaloreans get out of their homes on a lazy Sunday and gather at one spot in the city? No, not a political rally or a rock show or a mega sale at a mall. It was time for the annual Chitra Sante, an art fair that is a highlight of the Bangalore winter. The fair, in its eleventh year, is organised by the state-government run Chitrakala Parishat. It is held on the Parishat premises, and spills out in colourful profusion to the roads all around it.
