Germany's Dresden and Leipzig
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Check your local public television station for this Rick Steves’ Europe episode or watch it on Saxony, part of the former East Germany, remains a secret to most travelers. We’ll visit the two great cities of the region: the capital city of Dresden, with the opulent palaces and art treasures of the Wettin dynasty, and Leipzig, with its Bach heritage, a massive monument to the day Europe beat Napoleon, and museums remembering its communist heritage.

Leipzig is a cosmopolitan city that is alive and waiting to be explored. The New York Times ranked the city among the top ten of The 31 Places to Go in 2010. Also, the travel section of the British newspaper The Guardian mentioned Leipzig as the first out of 20 travel destinations in Germany.
Bustling night life, bars and clubs from very traditional to avant-garde are open all night long. Leipzig is an open-minded, friendly city where international students and guests feel at home. Leipzig has a population of about half a million inhabitants whereof approx. 40.000 are students. HHL is located on the University of Leipzig's campus for Sport Science which is in close proximity to the city center.

MY FAMILY IS HERE | Traveling to Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin and Prague
My family made the leap across the pond to come and see me, so I took them all across Germany and showed them a good time (hopefully).
It's always a weird one when your family comes into town. I think we had a good ol' time though!
Where should I go next?

Federal State Saxony - Leipzig was and still is a city of music. One of its oldest musical institutions is the world-famous St Thomas Boys Choir, which was led by none other than Johann Sebastian Bach for nearly three decades. Cantor Georg Christoph Biller, the current director of the boys choir, was kind enough to take an afternoon off to show us his favorite places in Leipzig. Our first stop is a heartbreaking place--or at least it was. The Johanna park was commissioned by a banker whose daughter died of a broken heart. We'll visit happier places, too, like the Mendelssohn House and a wonderful restaurant where you can savor the best cheesecake in the city.
One Hundred Tour Guides Walk into a Bar...
To kick off our 2016 Rick Steves’ Tour Guide summit, we gathered over a hundred guides at the neighborhood bar here in Edmonds, Washington. I find tour guides generally smart, interesting, and with great social skills. Bring 100 of them together from about 20 different countries after collectively leading 900 tours successfully, add lots of beer, and you’re in for a delightful evening. By the way, over the next several days I'll be posting many more reports from our busy week of work and play. Stay tuned.
At you'll find money-saving travel tips, small-group tours, guidebooks, TV shows, radio programs, podcasts, and more on this destination.

Discover Germany | My Dresden vacationing with a tourist f
Roger Behling comes from Pomerode in Brazil. The 26 year-old has taken a
day out of his tour of Germany to visit Dresden, capital of the state of Saxony.
Coming from a German-speaking community in Brazil,Roger Behling has few language problems in Germany. So he is very interested to learn more about the culture and people here and has chosen to come to Dresden on his first visit to Germany.
Views from an internationally renowned monument
Roger Behling sets off through the old heart of Dresden to one of its most famous monuments, the Frauenkirche. Built in the 18th century,it was badly damaged during World War Two. For more than forty years it stood in ruins, before restoration work began in 1994. Now fully restored, visitors can seen the interior at fixed times and climb 67 meters to the viewing platform. This is where Roger Behling got his first view over the city.
Impressive artworks in precious materials
His next stop was the new Green Vault in the Royal Palace, one of Europe's richest treasure houses. Roger Behling was amazed at the works of art in gold, silver, precious stones and other precious materials. More than a thousand exhibits are on view, dating from Renaissance to Classic times. Roger Behling was especially impressed by a cherry stone with 185 faces carved into it which he looked at through a magnifying glass.
Lifelike Baroque Dresden
Roger Behling ended his visit with a trip back in time. The Panometer, housed in an old gas holder, offers a 360 degree panorama of Dresden in 1756. Designed by Berlin artist Yadegar Asisi,it brings views of baroque sights such as the palace,Frauenkirche,Neumarkt and the landscape surrounding the river to life. The panoramic pictures, some 27 metres high and more than 100 metres long, are filled with people going about their daily business. Roger Behling is delighted with the way light effects and sounds of the baroque city change throughout the day.
At the end of his visit,Roger Behling said he liked Dresden very much and that he'd had a most enjoyable day.

Leipzig, Dresden&Bayreuth - in Wagner's footsteps | Discover Germany
When we think of Richard Wagner, most of us think of Bayreuth and its renowned festival. Wagner's 200th birthday is coming up in 2013, a good occasion for us to visit some of the sites where he lived and worked. We start with the city where the composer was born: Leipzig. Richard Wagner went to school here, at least when he wasn't cutting class. He preferred to take harmony lessons on the sly. These were the first steps on a long and often hard career. Today, a walking tour covers 25 sites in Leipzig connected to Wagner. Read more:
