As ourselves calling The Young Archaeologists we went on a search of the former house of I Gusti Nyoman Lempad in Bedulu. Together with our great friend Pak Muning, curator of the Puri Lukisan in Ubud. We found there very old paintings of the great master, made by him and his father. This is the follow up of the film concerning the wall of Lempad. Putu Mangku, member of the Lempad family was as always a great guide. We found it very special to be there. Lempad death ceremony
I Gusti Nyoman Lempad (1862?–1978) was known as a Balinese stone sculptor and architect (Undagi in Balinese) who built the palaces and temples in Ubud and its neighboring villages. In his later years, he produced hundreds of linear drawings of Balinese mythology and folklore. Lempad of Bali, a short documentary film produced by John Darling and Lorne Blair, tells the story of Lempad at the end of his life and his cremation ceremony.
Lempad's exact birth date, as many Balinese of his time, is unknown. But he was married when Krakatoa erupted in 1883. He died on April 25, 1978 at his home in Ubud, Bali. He gathered his family and asked them to bathe him and then died. The Balinese believed that he chose the time of his death at the day that considered most holy.
Although he maintained a close friendship with foreign artists, including Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies, Lempad never compromised his distinctive identity as a Balinese artist, and one with a broad range of talents in many media; painting, sculpture and architecture.

Bali Tempo Doeloe #7 Lewat Lempad, Mencermati Kembali Seni Rupa Bali

Ubud royal palace, Bali, Indonesia 2013
The Ubud Palace, officially Puri Saren Agung, is a historical building complex situated in Ubud, Gianyar Regency of Bali, Indonesia.
The palace is the official residence of the royal family of Ubud. It was on his travels that he received a divine revelation that in Bali he was to bury five precious metals on a mountain slope where the mother temple of Besakih now stands today. Along with a group of followers, Rsi Markaneya was magnetically attracted to a destination located in the central foothills of the island that radiated light and energy. This place was Campuhan in Ubud at a junction in the Wos River and it was here that he felt compelled to build a temple by the name of Pura Gunung Lebah.
The Balinese village of Ubud can trace its roots to as far back as the 8th century. It is documented on ancient palm leaf scripts that a revered holy man from India by the name of Rsi Markaneya embarked on a spiritual journey across Java and eventually came to the island of Bali to spread the teachings of Hinduism.
