Nestled into the Kremlin walls on the edge of Moscow's Red Square, the mausoleum has housed the embalmed remains of the Soviet leader since soon after his death in 1924.
A popular tourist attraction, there was a queue at the tomb as it reopened.
Masha, a nine-year-old schoolgirl explained her visit was like: It was a bit scary, but then I calmed down. He's dead after all. He's not going to attack us like a ghost.
American tourist Tami said: From what I've read, we're not sure if it's actually even Lenin that we're seeing or if it's a wax figure. I mean that's what I've read, you know, because how is it possible to keep him so well preserved and embalmed all these years? So maybe it was him, maybe it wasn't.
The restoration reignited a long-standing debate about whether Lenin should finally be buried, in keeping with Russian Orthodox tradition.

Vladimir Lenin's Mausoleum: should we finally move his body from it?
Vladimir Lenin’s body has been lying in his Mausoleum – or tomb – for 95 years now. But polls say that Russians want him gone from the Red Square. A centenary mummy should be rested at peace where they belong – in a cemetery. But not so fast! In this video, I will tell you why Soviet authorities kept Lenin's body, how they did it (and how North Korea is connected) and dive into a world of confusing Russian laws preventing his relocation.

INSIDE Lenin's Mausoleum
Yes...I sneaked in my camera and filmed inside. There was just no way that I was leaving moscow without having some footage of my all time hero. I believe this is some of the only footage found on the internet.
MOSCOW. Russian communists lay flowers at Lenin mausoleum
Russian communists on Sunday (November 5) walked through Moscow Red Square to lay flowers at Vladimir Lenin mausoleum and the grave of Soviet leader Josef Stalin to mark 100 years of October Revolution.
The Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov spoke about the importance of the revolutionary events of 1917.
Hundreds of people - including communists from foreign countries - came to lay flowers at mausoleum, some of them were holding portraits of Lenin and Stalin.
(v) RUSSIA: LENIN'S TOMB TO CLOSE FOR ANNUAL REPAIRS
Natural Sound
VOICED BY: Louise Bates
One of Russia's most famous tourist attractions, Lenin's Tomb, is closing on Tuesday for more than a month for yearly repairs.
The closure, which is routine, comes as the future of the mausoleum is being debated.
Many want to see the mausoleum closed for good and the embalmed Lenin lying in state buried in a proper grave in accordance with his wishes.
VOICE OVER:
(0.02)
The centre piece of Moscow's Red Square is shutting its doors for about two months -- so Vladimir Lenin, who's been lying in state for 75 years, can be repaired.
(0.14)
Each year, the mausoleum closes for extensive preservation work on his remains.
Lenin's embalmers who were hailed during the Soviet Union for their pioneering work, keep their trade a closely guarded secret.
(0.26)
What is known is that his body, which is kept in a climate-controlled environment for viewing visitors, will be soaked in a special solution and his face draped in an ointment..
The key is a secret liquid that will be pumped into his body to prevent tissue decay.
(0.43)
Although his body's been carefully attended to since his death, a debate is raging on whether the work should continue.
The whole nation mourned when the founder of the Soviet Union died.
.
(0.55)
But today, Lenin's body is not revered as it was in Soviet times, and opponents say his mausoleum is both expensive and overrated.
Supporters on the other hand say his tomb is an historic landmark and his remains don't deserve to be buried along with the rest of Russia's Communist past.

beautiful photo of Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow Russia
Lenin's Mausoleum, also known as Lenin's Tomb, situated in Red Square in the center of Moscow, is the mausoleum that serves as the current resting place of Vladimir Lenin. His embalmed body has been on public display there since shortly after his death in 1924 (with rare exceptions in wartime). Aleksey Shchusev's diminutive but monumental granite structure incorporates some elements from ancient mausoleums, such as the Step Pyramid and the Tomb of Cyrus the Great.
Lenin died on January 21, 1924. Two days later architect Aleksey Shchusev was charged with building a structure suitable for viewing of the body by mourners. A wooden tomb, in Red Square by the Kremlin wall, was ready January 27, and later that day Lenin's coffin was placed in it. More than 100,000[citation needed] people visited the tomb in the next six weeks. By August 1924, Shchusev had replaced the tomb with a larger one, and Lenin's body transferred to a sarcophagus designed by architect Konstantin Melnikov.
Pathologist Alexei Ivanovich Abrikosov had embalmed the body shortly after Lenin's death, but by 1929 it was determined that it would be possible to preserve the body for much longer than usual; therefore, the next year a new mausoleum of marble, porphyry, granite, and labradorite (by Alexey Shchusev, I.A. Frantsuz and G.K. Yakovlev) was completed.
In 1973 sculptor Nikolai Tomsky designed a new sarcophagus.
On January 26, 1924, the Head of the Moscow Garrison issued an order to place the Guard of Honour at the mausoleum. Russians call it the Number One Sentry. After the events of the Russian constitutional crisis of 1993, the Guard of Honour was disbanded. In 1997 the Number One Sentry was restored at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander Garden.
The body was removed in October 1941 and evacuated to Tyumen, in Siberia, when it appeared that Moscow might be in danger of capture by German troops. After the war, it was returned and the tomb reopened.
More than 10 million people visited Lenin's tomb between 1924 and 1972.
Joseph Stalin's embalmed body shared a spot next to Lenin's, from the time of his death in 1953 until October 31, 1961, when Stalin was removed as part of de-Stalinization and Khrushchev's Thaw, and buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis outside the walls of the Kremlin.
Lenin's body was to have been transferred to the Pantheon upon its completion but the project was cancelled in the aftermath of de-Stalinization.
