----------------
Praça da Liberdade (Liberdade Square) is the most important square in Porto and links the old town with the new.
The Praça da Liberdade (Liberdade Square) is Porto’s main square and it connects the old town with the modern part of the city.
The plaza is in the heart of Porto, very close to the Torre dos Clérigos (Clérigos Tower) and São Bento Railway Station.
In the middle of the Praça is a 10-meter bronze equestrian statue of King Peter IV from 1862. The King holds the Constitution in his hands and shows it to the people, itself a symbol of the King since he fought to protect it during the Liberal Wars.
At one end of Liberdade Square is Porto’s main artery, Avenida dos Aliados. It is flanked by modernist buildings from the beginning of the twentieth century, like the Town Hall and some of the city’s banks. This Avenue is also packed with restaurants including a McDonalds, with an interesting Modernist façade to blend in with the rest of the buildings.

Praça da Liberdade, the centre of town where daily life is incessantly present, is the approximate northern boundary of the historic centre.
Porto has many faces, it is the capital of the province, a bishops see, university city and centre of trade. It is a busy city with pretty and ugly streets, picturesque old neighbourhoods, impressive architecture and a lots of traffic. Everything that moves tries to make its way through a crisscross of streets, alleyways and squares. Much of the prosperity depends on the port and shipping activities.

Porto City Hall, Porto, Norte, Portugal, Europe
The current building of the City Hall of Porto, in Portugal, was designed by the Architect Correia da Silva and began to be built in 1920. The project came as a result of the plan of expansion of the civic center elaborated by the English architect Barry Parker, approved in 1916. The implementation of this plan led to the expansion north of the Liberdade Square, opening the Avenida dos Aliados and the current General Humberto Delgado Square. Although it was begun in 1920, the works of the building of the municipal districts suffered numerous interruptions, being introduced changes to the initial project, by Architect Carlos Ramos. The city services only settled in the new building in 1957. The building consists of six floors, a basement and two interior patios. The central tower, 70 meters high, with a chime clock, accessible by an inside staircase of 180 steps. The interiors, of marble and granite, are richly decorated. The façade of granite (removed from the quarries of S. Gens and Fafe in the early 20th century) is decorated with a dozen sculptures by José Sousa Caldas and Henrique Moreira representing the various activities that have always been linked to Porto, such as Viticulture, industry or shipping.
