Gettysburg marks Lincoln’s historic address on 153rd anniversary
A host of events were held in the small town of Gettysburg in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania on Saturday to commemorate the 153rd anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, as well as to remember the fallen soldiers in the bloodiest campaign of the U.S. Civil War. The commemoration came right after a presidential election that many believe has turned the nation into a house divided, and many participants said that Lincoln’s words still need to be heeded in the face of an increasingly polarized society.

The Gettysburg National Military Park protects and interprets the landscape of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the park is managed by the National Park Service. The GNMP properties include most of the Gettysburg Battlefield, many of the battle's support areas during the battle (e.g., reserve, supply, & hospital locations), and several other non-battle areas associated with the battle's aftermath and commemoration, including the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Many of the park's 43,000 American Civil War artifacts are displayed in the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center.
The park has more wooded land than in 1863, and the National Park Service has an ongoing program to restore portions of the battlefield to their historical non-wooded conditions, as well as to replant historic orchards and woodlots that are now missing. In addition, the NPS is restoring native plants to meadows and edges of roads, to encourage habitat as well as provide for historic landscape. There are also considerably more roads and facilities for the benefit of tourists visiting the battlefield park.

Civil War Museum of GAHS: then and now
Forming partnerships and designing lessons with real-world experiences is what this project entails. Nicolle Legore, LIU teacher of Autistic Support class at Gettysburg Area High School, together with Bryan Willard, history educator, had a vision of bringing their two classes together through history. What better way to begin than through the design and creation of a Civil WAr museum. But where would they mount this project? Here's where GAHS librarian, Vicki Saltzer, comes into the picture. She suggested the professional library inside the main library at the high school. So on Wednesday, November 5, both classes set to work and this is the outcome.

Gettysburg RR Station & G&H Railroad Depot, Gettysburg, PA
Today I saw the Two Railroad Stations in Gettysburg PA. I went to film them, and saw Tank cars, etc.
Gettysburg Railroad Station on Carlisle Street was, Built in the 1850s, for trains. It was used during the Civil War, for soldiers. Plus President Abraham Lincoln stopped here to deliver the Gettysburg Address in 1863.
The Other station down Railroad St. on North Washington street, was Gettysburg and Harrisburg Railroad Depot.
The Gettysburg and Harrisburg Railroad Depot was Built in 1884 for the Gettysburg and Harrisburg Railroad Company. In the 1970s to the 1990s the Railroad Depot was used for the now Defunct, Gettysburg Scenic Railroad. It was used for Steam Locomotive's, Which the railroad once had 3 Steam Locomotive's operating
- Missisippian 76 Built 1920.
- Huntington and Broad Top 38 Built 1927.
- Canadian Pacific 1278 Built 1948.
They were used on the railroad til the 1990s, except for No.38 was used through the 80s. Now at the Everett Railroad of Holidaysburg PA, awaiting Restoration.
No.76 was used through the 1990s, which she was poorly managed on the railroad, she is now Stored and Also awaiting Restoration, at the Michigan State Trust for railway Preservation.
Canadian Pacific 1278 was used until the end of Steam used on the railroad, which ended very Sad. On June 16, 1995 1278 suffered a Crown Sheet Fail Explosion, that sadly resulted in injuring the Engineer and Both Firemen were Given 3 degree Burns. That was the end of Steam in the Gettysburg RR. CP 1278 is now Stored at the Newer Age Of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio. The Locomotive's were Poorly Managed and taken care of, resulted of that Horrific Accident.

Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address from the movie 'Saving Lincoln'
A short speech, long remembered: Gettysburg Address praised at Pa. battle site 150 years later.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. — In solemnity, thousands gathered at a central Pennsylvania battlefield park Tuesday to honor a speech given 150 years ago that President Abraham Lincoln predicted would not be long remembered.
The inspirational and famously short Gettysburg Address was praised for reinvigorating national ideals of freedom, liberty and justice amid a Civil War that had torn the country into pieces.
President Lincoln sought to heal a nation's wounds by defining what a nation should be, said Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett, calling Lincoln's words superb, his faith deep and his genius profound. Lincoln wrote his words on paper, but he also inscribed them in our hearts.
Echoing Lincoln, keynote speaker and Civil War historian James McPherson said the president took the dais in November 1863 at a time when it looked like the nation might indeed perish from the earth.
The Battle of Gettysburg became the hinge of fate on which turned the destiny of that nation and its new birth of freedom, McPherson said.
In the July 1863 battle, considered the turning point of the war, Union forces fought back a Confederate invasion of Pennsylvania. Lincoln's speech was delivered more than four months later, at the dedication of a national cemetery to bury the battle's casualties.
In the short oration, he spoke of how democracy itself rested upon the proposition that all men are created equal, a profound and politically risky statement for the time. Slavery and the doctrine of states' rights would not hold in the more perfect union of Lincoln's vision.
In 272 words, he put together what everyone was thinking, what everyone should know, said park historian John Heiser. Because of varying transcriptions, scholars generally put the text at 268 to 272 words.

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 to April 15, 1865) was the 16th president of the United States and is regarded as one of America's greatest heroes due to his role as savior of the Union and emancipator of the slaves. His rise from humble beginnings to achieving the highest office in the land is a remarkable story. He was suddenly and tragically assassinated at a time when his country needed him to complete the great task remaining before the nation. His eloquence of democracy and insistence that the Union was worth saving embody the ideals of self-government that all nations strive to achieve. Lincoln's distinctively human and humane personality and incredible impact on the nation has endowed him with an enduring legacy.
On January 1, 1863, Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation, reshaping the cause of the Civil War from saving the Union to abolishing slavery. The Union Army's first year and a half of battlefield defeats made it difficult to keep up morale and support strong for a reunification of the nation. And the Union victory at Antietam on September 22, 1862, while by no means conclusive, was hopeful, giving Lincoln confidence to officially change the goals of the war.
Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation stated that all individuals who were held as slaves in rebellious states henceforward shall be free. The action was more symbolic than effective because the North didn’t control any states in rebellion and the proclamation didn’t apply to Border States, Tennessee or some Louisiana parishes.
On November 19, 1863, Lincoln delivered what would become his most famous speech and one of the most important speeches in American history, the Gettysburg Address. Addressing a crowd of around 15,000 people, Lincoln delivered his 272-word speech at one of the bloodiest battlefields of the Civil War, the National Cemetery of Gettysburg, in Pennsylvania.
The Civil War, Lincoln said, was the ultimate test of the preservation of the Union created in 1776, and the dead at Gettysburg fought to uphold this cause. Lincoln evoked the Declaration of Independence, saying it was up to the living to ensure that the “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth,” and this Union was “dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” A common interpretation was that the President was expanding the cause of the Civil War from simply reunifying the Union to also fighting for equality and abolishing slavery.
Abraham Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, by well-known actor and Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. He was taken to the Petersen House across the street and laid in a coma for nine hours before dying the next morning. His body lay in state at the Capitol before a funeral train took him back to his final resting place in Springfield, Illinois.
