Fresh Range
We are committed to providing local, healthy food for primary school children.
Bath & North East Somerset Council is making it easier for small, independent producers to supply fresh food to schools.
To help launch this initiative, Weston All Saints Primary School and St Michaels Church of England Junior School from Bath took part in a cook-off using a range of local ingredients at the Bristol Food Connections event.
Team Rocket: Weston All Saints Primary School and their kitchen manager Michael Slavin worked with Glyn Owen from Kids and Food. (in checked aprons with yellow straps.)
Team Kale: Children from St Michaels Church of England VC Junior School, their kitchen manager, Robert Davis, and cook Luke Carter, worked alongside BBC Cook of the year 2015 Jo Ingleby.(black aprons.)
They created their own healthy recipes, using fresh ingredients that come within the school dinner budget. The result was a draw.

Weird foods of the United Kingdom ????
Just like language, food brings people together. Every region has its own tastes, and the UK is no exception. In this lesson, I will teach you about the local food found throughout the United Kingdom. You will learn a little bit about each part of our land as well! Did you know that in Scotland, you can eat sheep's stomach and deep-fried chocolate bars? Those are only some of the wonderful and unique things there are to eat in the UK. Watch the video to learn more, and do the quiz to see how many foods you can remember! I'm going to go eat some jellied eels! Mmmmmmm...

TRANSCRIPT
Welcome back to engVid. So, getting to know a country is not just about speaking the language. We... We want to understand the food, because people are always going to be passionate about food, so it's good to be able to talk about it. I know we're not in France, I know we're not Italy, but there is some fine food to be found around the United Kingdom. So I'm going to be showing you, via my slightly distorted map here, some of the highlights that you can expect to find.
Okay, I think we'll start right up here in the top. Scotland, known for such things as the deep-fat-fried Mars bars. Okay? They also have haggis. Haggis is sheep's stomach. Mmm, tasty. They also have black pudding, which in... Sort of another strange bodily part of an animal which is used in a sort of cooked breakfast. Kedgeree is perhaps slightly healthier and tastier, this is... It's kind of like a... It's not a fish pie, but it's... It's kind of like fishy, ricey type thing. It's really quite yummy. You have it in a bowl. Yum-yum. Dundee cake, so this is like a fruitcake, raisins, it kind of looks brown. It's okay. Pease pudding, this is in Northumberland. This is made with sort of mushed up peas with meaty flavours, mushy peas with a decent flavour up there in Northumberland where you have Hadrian's Wall and some stunning coastline. I've marked out Bradford here on my map in Yorkshire. It's not typical British food, but as a melting pot of Asian cultures, that's probably where you'll find the best curry in Britain.
Here in Derbyshire... Derbyshire, of course, on the map from my eccentric Britain video in which we learnt that toe wrestling originated here, also is the birthplace of the Bakewell tart. I personally find it quite inedible, that means I can't eat it, not able to eat, Bakewell tart, but it's a pudding with strong almond flavours. The pork pie, obviously made from a pig, so Muslim friends probably not going to be the best for you, but it's, you know, pork with a sort of hard, crusty pastry. Quite satisfying snack. You can get it... Often order it in pubs.
We're here in Norfolk. This part of England is called East Anglia, Anglia after the Angles and Saxons who came from Denmark, Norway, those people over there. They came here and they landed in this part of country because it was nearest, so this is now East Anglia. This is where most of the Turkeys in the UK come from.
I've also pinpointed this little town, here, seaside town called Aldeburgh, that was also in my video: Difficult Places to Pronounce in the UK, Aldeburgh because it's spelt funny. Let me just write it down one more time because it's a lovely place to visit. Aldeburgh, great fish n' chips, have them on a beach, and a seagull comes and steals them all, but very tasty. This is Suffolk here. I won't tell you a joke about Suffolk and Norfolk, but you might be able to work it out, looking carefully at the sounds of the words and the spellings. This is where sausages and bacon are, you know, there's a lot of pig farms there. Very tasty.
Down here on the south coast... The south coast generally you're going to find pretty good seafood. I haven't quite finished this one off. Jellied eels, mm-mm-mm. Personally, I've never eaten this in my life, but if you want to, you know, really get the authentic British experience, then jellied eels is for you. Dover, the stunning, iconic... That's a good word for you to have. Iconic means something that... An icon is like an image that you remember, so the iconic Dover cliffs are maybe a very famous site of the UK. Here in Dover, the Dover sole, sole is a type of fish, it's a very flat fish, very good with a little bit of lemon. I've put London here. Yes, I know there are some other fabulous cities in the United Kingdom; Britain... Bristol, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, to name just a few, but I've put London here because I know it better than the other cities, other than next, down here.
River Cottage HQ, Devon, United Kingdom
youtube travel videos
We dropped into River Cottage HQ to learn about a UK movement towards growing and preparing one's own food.
River cottage was the original 'city life to living off the farm' series. I really enjoyed the original series and was interested to see what had developed since. River cottage HQ now run over 30 courses related to growing and cooking your own food.
The river cottage series has been so successful it has lead to similar food movements in Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. The show was also copied by SBS television in Australia with their gourmet farmer series.
For this video all I did was eat the organic food from the garden and do the interviews. Michele Zanussi did all the camerawork and editing. It was the first time she had down camerawork - How did she do? comment below.

Poo bus: Shuttle runs on human sewage and food waste between Bath and Bristol Airport
The UK’s first “poo bus” started shuttling passengers between Bath and the nearby Bristol this Thursday.
The 40-seat “bio-bus” runs on biomethane gas generated from human sewage and food waste through an anaerobic fermentation process. Methane extracted from the biogas is added to propane to produce fuel for the bus, which is stored in the vehicle’s dome-shaped roof. The biogas is produced at the Bristol sewage treatment works, which is run by Wessex Water subsidiary GENeco
The bus can travel up to 300 kilometres on a full tank of fuel, which is generated from waste that around five people produce in a year. The bus runs on a combustion engine similar to those found on conventional diesel buses, but emits up to 30 percent less carbon dioxide.
Mohammed Saddiq, general manager of GENeco, says the sewage treatment system can produce enough gas to power nearly 8,500 homes.
“Gas-powered vehicles have an important role to play in improving air quality in UK cities, but the Bio-Bus goes further than that and is actually powered by people living in the local area, including quite possibly those on the bus itself,” Saddiq said in a Guardian report.

Food on the ss Great Britain
Children from Wansdyke Primary School interviewed volunteer Tour Guide, David Slade, and found out what food was like on board the ss Great Britain for the passengers.
They asked:
• What can you tell us about a typical meal on board the ss Great Britain? (0:20 – 0:53)
• Did all passengers have the same meals? (0:53– 2:11)
• How did they keep the food fresh? (2:11 – 3:01)
• What special meals did they have? (3:01 – 3:40)
Over three days in February and March 2016, this film was planned, filmed and edited by children from Wansdyke Primary School in Bristol with guidance from staff from the ss Great Britain Trust and professional filmmakers from Chocolate Films.
During the project, pupils learnt the basics of film making and practised their team working, speaking and listening skills. The children worked in groups to come up with questions for ss Great Britain Trust staff and volunteers and filmed their interviews on location at Brunel’s ss Great Britain.
You can see all six films on our YouTube channel. We hope you enjoy their films as much as we did!

Hospital chefs say they've made the best veggie curry in all of England
Hospital chefs say they've made the best veggie curry in all of England. As part of a Food for All Hospital Catering Project, catering staff at the University Hospital Aintree in Liverpool, England sought the help of the Vegetarian Society and its Cordon Vert Cookery School training courses to develop a new vegetarian curry. The chefs are now confident that the dish, which contains baby corn, snap peas, mushrooms, and red peppers is the best in the country. In fact, its popularity has become so widespread that it has been added to the menus of patients and visitors alike. Hospital catering manager Sandra Higgins remarked, It's a very healthy dish, packed full of vitamins and we're really grateful to the Vegetarian Society for helping us to develop such a great meal. This helps ensure that patients get tasty, nourishing food to keep their strength up and aid in their recovery from treatment.
Bravo, chefs and staff of University Hospital Aintree and our appreciation, Vegetarian Society for what sounds like an incredible veg dish! May many other facilities be similarly inspired to create such sumptuous plant-based fare for its delicious and health- restoring benefits to all.
