Sand Boarding and Sand Angels at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado
We spent two nights at Great Sand Dunes Oasis campground near the entrance of Great Sand Dunes National Park. This full hookup campground got us set up with sand boards so we were ready to play in the sand. Josiah loved boarding and went up and down the steep slopes for two hours, each time choosing dunes that were higher and higher. Eleanor loved Medano creek. She splashed in the cool water surges and played in the sand for hours. Our trip wrapped up with some time spent in the visitor center and new junior ranger badges.

Blanca Peak (14,345 feet/4,372m), located just south of Great Sand Dunes, is one of four sacred mountains to the Navajo (Dine') people. In this 8-minute video podcast, Park Ranger Ravis Henry sings and tells their story of Sisnaajini - the White Shell Mountain, as well as the importance of Great Sand Dunes to his people.

Overlanding | Great Sand Dunes National Park
We spent an amazing weekend overlanding in the San Isabel National Forest. We had a great camping spot on some BLM land. While we were there we had the opportunity to visit Great Sand Dunes National Forest, and it did not disappoint. We have had the great fortune to visit many National Parks, and Sand Dunes was defiantly one of our favorites. This a great place to bring a picnic and setup by the river. You can hike out to the dunes for sand boarding, or go a little further and camp out on the sand for the night. The stars at night are amazing. What ever you choose you will not be disappointed.

Great Sand Dunes National Park || Colorado || FullTime RVers
Great Sand Dunes National Park has to be one of most deceptive places we have adventured at thus far. Not because there are evil deceptive people there, but those dunes are MUCH larger than they look in any pictures we have seen. Compare them to the size of the surrounding mountains and of course they are small, but they don't call them the Great Sand Dunes for nothing. You will have to see for yourself to truly see their mightiness!
Not only are the Great Sand Dunes the largest Sand Dunes in the United States, but they are also an awesome place to go sledding! Why wait for winter when you can sled in the summer too! Take a trip to the Great Sand Dunes and explore an incredibly unique landscape!

My mom had never been to the Great Sand Dunes in Southern Colorado, so we packed up the car and headed out on a mini-adventure. While there, we also found the UFO watchtower in Hooper...it's weird in the best way.

We went on an adventure to Great Sand Dunes National Park! We rented a sand sled from a store in a nearby town and went sand sledding on the dunes! The kids earned their Junior Ranger badges as well. We had a blast, but have a few tips for people who go in the future.

Annual Sand Robotics Challenge 2016
This annual springtime event is sponsored by NASA and Adams State University. Regional college students learn about the science of Mars Rover robotics while building their own rover and competing in a small challenge course. According to Brian Sanders, organizer of the annual event, the annual challenge is designed to further robot development, and challenge teams to learn about electronics, programming and operating in a difficult environment. Our site, at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, is an excellent location for a simulated Mars mission. The terrain near the sand dunes creates an environment similar to what can be found on Mars. While the Great Sand Dunes are a wilderness area where mechanized equipment is prohibited, the event is held on the close side of Medano Creek, outside the wilderness boundary. NASA scientists study Great Sand Dunes because they are most similar to the dunes on Mars....including ice and snow!

We are loving our time in Colorado! We start off this episode exploring Great Sand Dunes National Park and then head back to camp to show you a great free camping spot we found on Campendium. We stayed at San Luis State Wildlife Area and get this, we had free 50 amp hookups! They have a dump station on site as well but no water hookups. Not bad for free! We moved to Mesa Verde National Park next and had an absolute blast running around this park. It's safe to say it jumped into our top three National Parks! Jason also upgraded the control panels for our air conditioners; now we're able to control them remotely!

SUMMARY
=======
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is an American national park that conserves an area of large sand dunes up to 750 feet (229 m) tall on the eastern edge of the San Luis Valley, and an adjacent national preserve located in the Sangre de Cristo Range, in south-central Colorado, United States. The park was originally designated Great Sand Dunes National Monument on March 17, 1932 by President Herbert Hoover. The original boundaries protected an area of 35,528 acres (55.5 sq mi; 143.8 km2). A boundary change and redesignation as a national park and preserve was authorized on November 22, 2000 and then established by an act of Congress on September 24, 2004. The park encompasses 107,342 acres (167.7 sq mi; 434.4 km2) while the preserve protects an additional 41,686 acres (65.1 sq mi; 168.7 km2) for a total of 149,028 acres (232.9 sq mi; 603.1 km2). The recreational visitor total was 486,935 in 2017, about 25% more than the 388,308 visitors of 2016.The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America. The dunes cover an area of about 30 sq mi (78 km2) and are estimated to contain over 5 billion cubic meters of sand. Sediments from the surrounding mountains filled the valley over geologic time periods. After lakes within the valley receded, exposed sand was blown by the predominant southwest winds toward the Sangre de Cristos, eventually forming the dunefield over an estimated tens of thousands of years. The four primary components of the Great Sand Dunes system are the mountain watershed, the dunefield, the sand sheet, and the sabkha. Ecosystems within the mountain watershed include alpine tundra, subalpine forests, montane woodlands, and riparian zones.Evidence of human habitation in the San Luis Valley dates back about 11,000 years. The first historic peoples to inhabit the area were the Southern Ute Tribe, while Apaches and Navajo also have cultural connections in the dunes area. In the late 17th century, Don Diego de Vargas—a Spanish governor of Santa Fe de Nuevo México—became the first European on record to enter the San Luis Valley. Juan Bautista de Anza, Zebulon Pike, John C. Frémont, and John Gunnison all travelled through and explored parts of the region in the 18th and 19th centuries. The explorers were soon followed by settlers who ranched, farmed and mined in the valley starting in the late 19th century. The park was first established as a national monument in 1932 to protect it from gold mining and the potential of a concrete manufacturing business.Visitors must walk across the wide and shallow Medano Creek to reach the dunes in spring and summer months. The creek typically has a peak flow from late May to early June in most years. From July through April, the creek is usually no more than a few inches deep, if there is any water at all. Hiking is permitted throughout the dunes with the warning that the sand surface temperature may reach 150 °F (66 °C) in summer. Sandboarding and sandsledding are popular activities, both done on specially designed equipment which can be rented just outside the park entrance or in Alamosa. Visitors with street-legal four-wheel drive vehicles may continue past the end of the park's main road to Medano Pass on 22 miles (35 km) of unpaved road, crossing the stream bed of Medano Creek nine times and traversing 4 miles (6.4 km) of deep sand. Hunting is permitted in the preserve during the months of autumn, while hunting is prohibited within national park boundaries at all times. The preserve encompasses nearly all of the mountainou ...
