OMD & The Liverpool Philharmonic - Joan Of Arc (Maid Of Orleans)
VIDEO INFO: Never afraid to flirt with the pretentious ...this is ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK (the chunky-sweatered 1980's synth-pop duo) performing with The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (Not to be confused with the Liverpool People's Liberation Philharmonic Orchestra) against the backdrop of an artistic installation that comprised film footage focusing on the Gothic architecture found in certain UK power stations (!?). If this wasn't enough artiness - they are embarking on the well-trodden path of 'Electric Proms' treatment of a song that has three different names. Initially titled Joan Of Arc (Maid Of Orleans) - when it was released as a single, it had to be re-titled Maid Of Orleans (The Waltz Joan Of Arc) so as not to cause confusion with the previous single from the same album named 'Joan Of Arc'. Confusion remained and so it is now normally just referred to as 'Maid of Orleans' - but all that said, it represents their masterpiece in my humble opinion and this is a goose-pimply good rendition of a song the band themselves are a bit sniffy about having referred to it (perhaps with tongue-in-cheek), as their 'Mull of Kintyre' - surely it's closer to 'Hey Joan'! ...and I haven't made the slightest mention of the dancing!!! This was from the concert recorded at the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool; 20 June 2009 and subsequently released on DVD 6-months later with the pithy title of 'Electricity: OMD with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra - featuring a performance of The Energy Suite'.

St George’s Day: The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians with special guests Damon Albarn and Mounir Troudi
Monday 23 April Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians present an alternative vision of their country and culture - given special resonance on the day that celebrates Britain's patron saint, St George, who may have come from Syria. The event will highlight and celebrate the remarkable music culture of Syria, providing a more positive perspective than the tragic events currently seen in the news.
Performing both traditional Arabic music as well as contemporary compositions the orchestra’s joyful performances have been lauded across Europe. This performance features musicians forced to flee their country by civil war, most of whom now live in Britain. Their show is an expression of the irrepressibility of music, showing once again how culture can surpass politics and conflict to bring people together.
This special performance, commissioned by Liverpool’s own Rapid Response Unit, offers a fresh perspective on notions of national identity for St George’s Day. Members of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will join the Syrian musicians alongside guest appearances from the charismatic Tunisian performer Mounir Troudi and songwriter and musician Damon Albarn.
The orchestra has collaborated with Albarn since 2008, performing on the Gorillaz track 'White Flag' and joining the group's 2010 world tour. Two years ago Africa Express invited members of the Orchestra still in Syria and those in Europe to reunite for a tour of Europe that included opening the Glastonbury and Roskilde festivals and a show broadcast worldwide from London’s Royal Festival Hall by YouTube.
