Year in Review - Norwalk Culture
Watch more and discuss:
Reporter Kwegyirba Croffie takes a look back at some newsmakers in Norwalk culture in 2013.
Over the summer, David Westmoreland and Laura McCarthy had an important job to do - moving the Norwalk Museum. Westmoreland and McCarthy were in charge of moving over 300 years of Norwalk history from South Norwalk to City Hall.
Westmoreland said, this is really aunique opportunity for Norwalk to go through and understand what it is in the museum's collection, and to make sure it's safeguarded.
Westmoreland added,The most important piece is the education programs and events you can tie in to the exhibits, so you can teach the public about Norwalk and its amazing history.
Over 3,000 items have been placed in storage. The artifacts will have a permanent home in the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum.
On November 10th, a playground honoring Allison Wyatt, Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victim opened in Oyster Shell Park. The playground is one of 26 being constructed by The Sandy Ground Project, which aims tobuild 26 playgrounds in areas damaged by Hurricane Sandy in memory of the 26 lives lost in Sandy Hook Elementary School.
This is a celebration of Allison Wyatt's beautiful life although short lived, said Bill Lavin, Founder of The Sandy Ground Project: Where Angels Play. She is touching hundreds and thousands of people and as we say in Where Angels Play, this project here will impact so many children and will play on a playground where they may have otherwise not have had an opportunity.
Ruthann Walsh, Pepperidge Farm Director, Corporate Citizenship said, We saw the ugly side of people last December 14th. But building this playground has really showed all of us the beauty and the goodness and the love and the kindness that we all do have.
Allison's Playground marked 13th site for the Sandy Ground Project. Playgrounds have been built Bridgeport, New London, and towns in New York and New Jersey.
For 25 year, Rick and Joan Setti have set up their Christmas village on Midwood Road for the young and young at heart to enjoy. What started off as a decorating challengeis now a one and half acre winter wonderland, with over 700 handmade wooden figures.
Rick Setti said, You cannot explain the look on their face when they see this for the first time. That kind of gave us more inspiration to do more and more and more.
Grace who visited the Village in the snow says, It's just so cute here. Henry, who is my little brother, really loves it.It's almost like you are stepping into the North Pole a little bit. There are lights everyone and it's like picturing what it would actually be like there.
After 25 years the Setti's say 2014 will be the last year for their Christmas Village. That's what shaped the culture of Norwalk in 2013. Thank's for watching and we'll see you in the New Year.
