Why trams in London are the best in the world ? UK
Some historical facts
The world's first passenger tram was the Swansea and Mumbles Railway, in Wales, UK. The Mumbles Railway Act was passed by the British Parliament in 1804, and this first horse-drawn passenger tramway started operating in 1807.It was worked by steam from 1877, and then, from 1929, by very large (106-seater) electric tramcars, until closure in 1961.
The first streetcar in America, developed by John Stephenson, began service in the year 1832.This was the New York and Harlem Railroad's Fourth Avenue Line which ran along the Bowery and Fourth Avenue in New York City. These trams were an animal railway, usually using horses and sometimes mulesto haul the cars, usually two as a team. Rarely, other animals were tried, including humans in emergency circumstances. It was followed in 1835 by New Orleans, Louisiana, which is the oldest continuously operating street railway system in the world, according to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
The first tram in Continental Europe opened in France in 1839 between Montbrison and Montrond, on the streets inside the towns, and on the roadside outside town. It had permission for steam traction, but was entirely run with horse traction. In 1848, it was closed down after repeated economic failure. The tram developed in numerous cities of Europe (some of the most extensive systems were found in Berlin, Budapest, Birmingham, Leningrad, Lisbon, London, Manchester, Paris).
The first tram in South America opened in 1858 in Santiago, Chile. The first trams in Australia opened in 1860 in Sydney. Africa's first tram service started in Alexandria on 8 January 1863. The first trams in Asia opened in 1869 in Batavia (now Jakarta), Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia).
Problems with horsecars included the fact that any given animal could only work so many hours on a given day, had to be housed, groomed, fed and cared for day in and day out, and produced prodigious amounts of manure, which the streetcar company was charged with storing and then disposing. Since a typical horse pulled a streetcar for about a dozen miles a day and worked for four or five hours, many systems needed ten or more horses in stable for each horsecar.
Horsecars were largely replaced by electric-powered trams following the improvement of an overhead trolley system on trams for collecting electricity from overhead wires by Frank J. Sprague. His spring-loaded trolley pole used a wheel to travel along the wire. In late 1887 and early 1888, using his trolley system, Sprague installed the first successful large electric street railway system in Richmond, Virginia. Within a year, the economy of electric power had replaced more costly horsecars in many cities. By 1889, 110 electric railways incorporating Sprague's equipment had been begun or planned on several continents.
Horses continued to be used for light shunting well into the 20th century. Many large metropolitan lines lasted well into the early twentieth century. New York City had a regular horsecar service on the Bleecker Street Line until its closure in 1917.Pittsburgh, had its Sarah Street line drawn by horses until 1923. The last regular mule-drawn cars in the US ran in Sulphur Rock, Arkansas, until 1926 and were commemorated by a U.S. postage stamp issued in 1983.[6] The last mule tram service in Mexico City ended in 1932, and a mule tram in Celaya, Mexico, survived until 1954.The last horse-drawn tram to be withdrawn from public service in the UK took passengers from Fintona railway station to Fintona Junction one mile away on the main Omagh to Enniskillen railway in Northern Ireland. The tram made its last journey on 30 September 1957 when the Omagh to Enniskillen line closed. The van now lies at the Ulster Transport Museum.
Horse-drawn trams still operate on the 1876-built Douglas Bay Horse Tramway in the Isle of Man, and at the 1894-built Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram, in Adelaide, South Australia. New horse-drawn systems have been established at the Hokkaidō Museum in Japan

An explorer tied to an office has the most oar-some commute ever - KAYAKING to work down the river Thames.
Explorer George Bullard leaves his home in the morning on an inflatable kayak which he paddles to work in.
George, 28, hated his commute on the tube so much he decided to ditch the rush hour crush and get to work by Kayak.
George said: “The Thames is the breathing hole to London, it’s nice to be out on the river and to have the wind in my face instead of an armpit on the tube.

The BHC Jubilee Pageant! Small hovercraft cruise through central London May 2012
With a little time to spare after finishing work surveying Chelsea Creek, there was time to fulfill an ambition and take a leisurely cruise down from Chelsea to Tower Bridge. Just a few days before the Thames Pageant and at least the weather was good! The Thames is a demanding stretch of water, with massive wash from the numerous river traffic (especially the Catamaran River Buses who make a real mess when they park!) I picked a very nice day with calm water and low tide, no dramas at all and very enjoyable viewing the greatest city in the world from the river.
Hovercraft are catagorsied as boats in the UK so I was within my rights to cruise the Thames and received a cheery wave from the River Police and PLA boat, and thousands of tourists and riverside dwellers - great fun!

Ouse Valley Viaduct, England Drone Flight (4K)
The Ouse Valley Viaduct (also called Balcombe Viaduct) carries the London-Brighton Railway Line over the River Ouse in Sussex. The crossing, which is north of Haywards Heath and south of Balcombe, was completed in 1841. The 11 million bricks needed for its construction were shipped up the Ouse River (via Newhaven and Lewes) from the Netherlands. It cost £38,500 to build. (equivalent to about £3.6 million in 2016)
The viaduct is 96 feet (29 m) high and is carried on 37 semi-circular arches, each of 30 feet (9.1 m), surmounted by balustrades, spanning a total length of 1,480 feet (450 m). Each pier contains a Jack arch with a semi-circular soffit to reduce the number of bricks required. At each end of the abutment is an ornamental square open tower, the brickwork of which is faced with stone from Heddon Quarries near Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The viaduct was designed by engineer for the line John Urpeth Rastrick in association with the architect of the London to Brighton railway, David Mocatta. It has been described as probably the most elegant viaduct in Britain.
Work to build the ornate viaduct began shortly after an Act of Parliament was passed in July 1837 giving the London & Brighton Railway company assent to construct the line to the south coast. More than 11 million bricks were shipped across the English Channel from the Netherlands to Newhaven and Lewes. Caen stone was also brought from Normandy in France. Building materials were transported to the construction site on barges up the Ouse River Navigation.
The Brighton main line was opened in two sections because completion was delayed by the need to construct some major earthworks. The viaduct was officially opened when the section between Norwood Junction - Haywards Heath was opened on 12 July 1841. Initially there was only one track in operation. The second line along with the viaduct's ornate stone parapets and pavilions were not completed until the following year.
By 1846, the viaduct had become part of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. In 1923 it became part of the Southern Railway network until nationalisation of the Big Four (British railway companies) in 1948.

UK company aims to bring private jet travel to mainstream passengers ++FIRST RUN APRIL 22++
(29 Apr 2016) LEAD IN:
A new UK-based tech company is attempting to make the often luxurious and glitzy world of private aviation accessible to mainstream travellers.
Stratajet developed a high-tech price comparison website which gathers details and prices on private jets in seconds, rather than requiring potential customers or brokers to manually gather that information.
STORY-LINE:
When booking a holiday trip, many travellers would expect hiring one of these private jets to be way out of their price range.
Not so, according to Jonny Nicol, the founder and CEO of UK-based tech company Stratajet and former pilot.
He spent five years developing the algorithms required to deliver what he describes as a game-changer: Stratajet's private aviation price comparison website.
It's exactly the same way as you would interact with Skyscanner or KAYAK or anything aviation-based price comparison sites, explains Nicol.
It has a few differences, you can go postcode to postcode, not just airport to airport.
But at its heart, you say where you want to go, when you want to go, and it will give you a range of options of different aircraft - some like this one - and it will give you as price, you pay it and away you go.
A number of private aviation flights are currently manually handled and calculated by brokers.
Stratajet's search engine computes the vast number of variables, including taxes, landing and handling fees, in around ten seconds.
A number of logistics, including whether aircraft of particular size can use certain airfields, are also considered.
It then delivers a list of flight options, similar in appearance to many flight price comparison websites.
Nicol claims that by also allowing travellers to search so-called empty leg flights - meaning empty private jet flights without any passengers on board - Stratajet is able to offer journeys at a reduced cost.
What we're able to do is make it accessible right now to everybody, he says.
There is obviously a question over cost and by increasing utilisation, by decreasing empty legs - and empty legs are literally just burning fuel for the sake of it - and by using those to move people around, we're able to across the board to not just make it cheaper for the super wealthy to fly privately, but far more importantly, make it possible for your mainstay traveller to fly privately as well.
To demonstrate how Stratajet's technology can be used, the Associated Press attended a media trip from near London, UK to the west of Ireland.
Passengers flew from Luton Airport, around 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of central London, to Ireland West Airport Knock, around 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Galway in Ireland. The flight took around 75 minutes.
In the space of a few hours, passengers visited Ashford Castle, a luxury hotel in County Mayo, and hopped on board a private boat trip along the picturesque shores of Lake Lough Corrib.
Nicol says that by using private aviation, travellers can access a new level of freedom.
We left when we were ready to leave, we flew back when we were ready to fly back, he says.
We weren't beholden to a schedule of an airline, and that is one of the intangibles because we got control of our lives back and I think that's really what Stratajet is all about, it's about freedom of being able to travel without putting our lives in the control of other agencies when we do that.
Stratajet joins a collection of online private aviation tools, including Netjets and Jetsmarter.
According to Sean Tipton, media relations manager at the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), growing wealth is pushing the private aviation industry to new heights.
At the very top stratum of society, there are people doing very well, he says.

About me :
I am from Memphis, Tennessee (Bartlett) in the United States of America.
Memphis / Bartlett is still my homebase.
I’ve been to 26 countries so far.
I’d like to go to over 100 countries.
Started backpacking or international traveling in summer 2014, and at first all I cared to go was Canada. I dated someone there after I went a few times so I didn’t have a strong desire for anywhere else. After that relationship ended my desire to keep going to Canada diminished and did a two month eurotrip, I spent 5 weeks in the United Kingdom. I went to Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Coventry, Birmingham, & Sheffield. I had a blast in the UK. Then I went to Berlin, Germany. Oslo, Norway. & Paris, France. That was just a hell of a trip and after that the travel bug officially bit me.
