Things to do in Shanghai Jing'An temple or Longhua temple China Vlog
After 4 years in Shanghai I just would like to share my personal experience and therefore from time to time I will make videos called Shanghai travel guide to recommend some places. This time let us have look on the Jing'An temple compared to the Longhua temple.
Both are in the downtown of the Shanghai but still different. One of them is more spiritual and one more commercial.

Longhua Temple, dedicated to Maitreya Buddha, Shanghai, China
Longhua Temple is a Buddhist Temple located west of Pudong in Shanghai, China. The name of the temple literally means Lustre of the Dragon Temple.
The temple was originally constructed during the Three Kingdoms Period in 242 AD, though most of the buildings seen today are reconstructions.
What makes Longhua Temple so special is that it still preserve its architectural design, based off a Song dynasty (960–1279) monastery.
Standing next to the temple entrance is Longhua Pagoda, an important and historic octagonal pagoda in the city of Shanghai. The brick base and body of the seven-storey pagoda as seen today was built in 977 though parts of it have been renovation over the years as the wood is extremely fragile.
The temple is dedicated to the Maitreya Buddha.

Longhua Temple in Shanghai, China
Longhua Temple is the oldest temple in Shanghai for its long history of over 1,700 years. Because of the several destructions by the wars, most of the buildings here were reconstructed during the reign of the Emperor Tongzhi and Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. - Travel China Guide

Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai, China
In 1882, a temple was founded at this location to house two rare jade Buddha statues brought to Shanghai from Burma. While the temple was destroyed in 1911 during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty, the statues were saved. A new temple, as seen today, was rebuilt from 1918 through 1928. Although the history of the temple is short, its striking classical architectural style are unique, especially in a modern city such as Shanghai.

Asia Vlog 15: Jade Buddha Temple, M50 Art District, and Lujiazui | Shanghai, China
On our first day in Shanghai, we went to the amazingly cool Jade Buddha Temple, walked around a cool park and explored the art galleries at M50. After dinner, we went to the Central Business District (Lujiazui) to see downtown and the Bund.
---
What's going on here?
We spent 110 days exploring Asia from October 2013 to January 2014. We vlogged the entire trip but we never edited it. Right now, a few years later, we're finally going through each vlog.
Click here to see all 110 days in a 2-minute video Tour of Asia:
---
0:29 - The Jade Buddha Temple is a large and very popular complex. We spent about 3 hours here exploring all the little rooms and sanctuaries. (Part of that time was spent just sitting, waiting for the large groups to move through so we could have the place to ourselves.) This is a definite must-see for Shanghai.
1:56 - Mengqing Park is a brand new park built on land that was a factory that made the surrounding Suzhou River the most polluted river in Shanghai. The Park was designed to rehabilitate and cleanse the area.
2:30 - On the way to M50, artists have tagged and graffitied all the walls and it's quite the sight. M50 stands for 50 Moganshan Lu, the actual address of the now defunct factory that housed over 120 art galleries and studio spaces. If you like art, this place is incredible! One of the coolest collections of art on the planet.
4:34 - Lujiazui is the central business district for Shanghai, where you find all the skyscrapers. Unlike other business districts (like New York) that virtually die at night because everyone works 9-5, Lujiazui was designed to include shopping and restaurants to attract people at night as well. It's fun. Looking out across the water from Lujiazui (sometimes called Pudong, which is the much larger area - like calling the Financial District in New York Manhattan), you can see the Bund, which you'll see lots more of later in the week, so make sure you're subscribed!

Jade Buddha Temple Featuring Buddhist Monk Ceremonies-Shanghai, China
The Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai was founded in 1882 with two jade Buddha statues imported to Shanghai from Burma by sea. These were a sitting Buddha and a smaller reclining Buddha representing Buddha's death. The temple now also contains a much larger reclining Buddha made of marble, donated from Singapore, and visitors may mistake this larger sculpture for the original, smaller piece. The temple was destroyed during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Fortunately the statues were saved and a new temple was built on the present site in 1928. It was named the Jade Buddha Temple. Jade Buddha Temple is an active temple, with 70-100 resident monks.

Description
Jade Buddha Temple - Shanghai - China
During the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (1871–1908) in the Qing dynasty, Huigen, a Buddhist monk, went on a pilgrimage to Tibet. He visited Myanmar (also known as Burma) after leaving Tibet. While there, Chen Jun-Pu, an overseas Chinese resident in Myanmar, donated five jade Buddha statues to Huigen, who transported two of them back to Shanghai. Here, Huigen had a temple built in 1882 with donated funds, where he placed the two jade Buddha statues. Shortly after the construction of the temple, the Buddhist monk passed away.
In 1911, during the Chinese Revolution, the original temple was occupied and damaged by the rebels. The temple, as well as the jade statues, were moved to a new location.
A few years later, in 1918, a Buddhist monk by the name of Kechen later had a new temple built on land donated by a member of the Qing imperial court, Sheng Xuanhuai. The construction took ten years, and completed in 1928.
In the 1960's, during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the temple faced difficult times and the monks had to make a living by selling handicrafts. In 1983, the Shanghai Buddhist Association used the temple as the headquarters of The Shanghai Institute of Buddhism.
