McDowell Mountain | Epic climb, crowded descent on Lost Dog Wash, Old Jeep, and Sunrise | 12/29/2019
13 miles and ~1700 feet of climbing on the South side of the McDowell Mountain range. Not the snooze-fest I was expecting when I signed up, but well worth it for the views.
Started off at the Lost Dog Wash trail head, up Lost Dog Wash trail to the lookout, back down by way of Old Jeep Trail and Ringtail, and then one hell of a climb up Sunrise Trail. Yet again, the descent was a little above my pay grade, and made worse by having to stop every hundred feet for hikers. Still a great ride with great people, despite the 39 degree starting temperature.

Lost Dutchman State Park - The Basin and Waterfall - Superstition Peak - Flatiron Trail
Beautiful video of the Basin area and waterfall in the Superstition Mountains in the Superstition Wilderness. The trail begins in Lost Dutchman State Park and reaches the Superstition Wilderness boundary once the steep climbing begins. The trail to Superstition Peak and the Flatiron are considered extremely difficult and the Basin area can be very slippery in general. Lots of time, water and energy are required to complete this long and arduous hike.

Hiking and Getting Lost in Cottonwood, Arizona
On this episode of the Arizona Timeless Tourist, Lewis and I find ourselves lost on the Jail Trail in Cottonwood, Arizona. After exploring some ruins in the area we come across a small town that has a trail leading to a river. I don't know if it was because we were both tired and hungry from a long day of hiking and driving, but we became very paranoid as we walk the Jail Trail.

Scottsdale is a desert city in Arizona east of state capital Phoenix. It's known for its spa resorts and golf courses, including TPC Scottsdale. Farther north, trails wind through McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a desertscape of hills, rock formations and cacti. Nearby is Taliesin West, architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s former home and studio. Downtown's Old Town Scottsdale has 1920s buildings and 19th-century olive trees.
Scottsdale is home to many galleries, high quality resorts, and golf courses. It is also one of the wealthier parts of the Phoenix Metro Area. High end shopping destinations are one of the primary attractions of the city. For example, the Fashion Square Mall is near downtown Scottsdale and is one of the biggest malls in the United States. The extensive galleries to the west of the downtown also offer upscale shopping and strolling. The galleries in this area display works both from local artists and from around the world.
The Old Town section of Scottsdale is to the east of the gallery district. It showcases swanky upscale style as well as a caricature of the gruff American West. Well over half the shops are gift shops. However, it is fun enough for a browse in a Disneyland sort of way.
Both Old Town and Downtown Scottsdale possess an dazing array of bars, nightclubs, pool clubs and chic eateries. Nicknamed the Beverly Hills of the Desert, Scottsdale is second to none in terms of opportunity for high-end debauchery.
The valley of the sun has over 130 miles of canals. Most of them were built in the last 100 years to provide water for the irrigation of farm land. However, now that the valley is much less agrarian the canals are primarily used to carry away storm water. Some are also used to generate hydroelectric power.
These often overlooked gems are open to the public. One can take in the beautiful desert scenery and fresh air while strolling along them. They provide walkers, joggers, and bikers with a nice refuge from traffic. But don't try swimming in the canals, aside from being an obvious bad idea because the sides are so steep it is also illegal, along with motorized vehicles.

Hiking Camelback Mountain, Arizona
While in Arizona presenting at the NSTA Conference my daughter and I hiked Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was a great hike, beautiful scenery. What I enjoyed most was spending quality and serene time with my daughter Chelsa. It was nice to see so many individuals of all ages and physical abilities hiking the trail. Camelback mountain is 2,704 feet above sea level. It is made up of primarily sandstone, the hump of Camelback is made up of granite. The flora and fauna is typical of what is seen in Sonara desert area aside from larger mammals. The music is provided by Peer Gynt Lobogris, superb guitarist. The song is entitled The Last Sunset. Peer Gynt Lobogris's music can be found on Jamendo.
Hiking the McDowell Sonoran Preserve
Some footage I took along a ten mile hike through the preserve. Audio is an excerpt from a track called Höstdagar by Lönndom. The title translates to autumn days; video was recorded on the first day of autumn 2015.
