Clay Bird Shooting at Makoura Lodge - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 70: This morning we clay bird shooting at Makoura Lodge before hitting the road to our next New Zealand destination. It’s part of our 365 Days: 365 Activities.
Yesterday - Day 69 -
Tomorrow – Day 71 –
About this video:
This morning we are squeezing in one last activity before we leave the awesome adventure lodge of Makoura Lodge. We are doing clay bird shooting at Makoura Lodge in Manawatu.
As soon as we wake up we meet one of our Makoura Lodge hosts for a round of clay bird shooting. It’s the first time we are firing a shotgun and we get full training from our Makoura Lodge host. We have about 10 clay birds to shoot so the competition is on to see who can shoot the most clay birds!
It’s an awesome way to end out time at Makoura Lodge before moving onto our next New Zealand destination, Plimmerton on the outskirts of Wellington.
The road to Plimmerton takes us through the Manawatu region with some stunning scenery of rolling green hills – classic New Zealand scenery as if we were in Middle-earth. We reach Plimmerton just in time to watch the sunset on the beach.
So what do you think of clay bird shooting at Makoura Lodge? Is it an activity you would try in New Zealand?

My Supersonic Concorde Flight - Concorde 50th
March 2nd, 2019 is Concorde’s 50th anniversary since her first flight. Concorde was absolutely the gold standard of aviation
I flew on the supersonic Concorde in 2003 from New York to London in just over 3 hours at twice the speed of sound. This video shares with you my ultimate flight of my life; on-board the supersonic Concorde.
Watch with a detail explanation of the Concorde cockpit unique features plus a ride in the Concorde simulator. Several Concorde Pilots and cabin crew members spoke about their feelings of the Concorde.
At 3:40pm on March 2nd, the Concorde drooped its nose as we celebrate the Concorde 50th anniversary. (same time as the first test flight took off 50 years ago) Don't miss the amazing celebration footage.
Special thanks to Brooklands Museum in Surrey England for the permission to film. They open year round for visitors to enjoy the Concorde experience:

In this video, we pay homage to and celebrate the extraordinary service life of the supersonic Concorde jet whose inaugural flight occurred 50 years ago on 2nd March 1969. Re-live the extraordinary and exciting 50th anniversary celebrations held at the Brooklands Museum in Surrey, England, which houses the only Concorde simulator in the world, and see for yourself why this aeroplane will always be on another level compared to all others.
The Concorde jet was a miracle of engineering in many ways – a flight from London to New York could be completed in three and a half hours, allowing wealthy businessmen to, astonishingly, fly to New York for a meeting and return home the same day. The aeroplane’s top speed of just over twice the speed of sound – Mach 2.04 or 1,354 miles per hour – meant that time travel was no longer confined to the realms of science fiction; flights could take off in darkness in London in the evening and arrive in day-light in the early afternoon in New York the same day.
Even today the aeroplane looks extremely futuristic which is a testament to how far ahead of the curve Concorde was at the time. In this video, we take a look at the internal features of this aeroplane which made it unique, including its fighter jet like cockpit with analogue controls, smaller than average windows to protect against decompression and cooling and heat protection system to deliver the plane from the effects of friction with the air, magnified many times due to the plane’s supersonic speeds. We also see the famous drooping nose and accompanying visor of the Concorde jet, giving greatly enhanced landing and take-off visibility when down and supreme aerodynamic efficiency when raised.
The Concorde jet was developed jointly by Sud Aviation, now Aerospatiele and Airbus, and the British Aircraft Corporation, now BAE systems. Sadly, the production run of Concorde was much smaller than anticipated due to massive overruns in both time and budget – the original program cost of Concorde was estimated at £70 million but ended up being £1.3 billion. With so few planes, British Airways and Air France could never recoup the cost of the aeroplanes and so this was absorbed by the British and French governments respectively but their high ticket prices – a round-trip from London to New York typically cost $8,000 – still made Concorde highly profitable for the airlines, apparently ensuring that Concorde would race along the skies for the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately, the sonic boom of Concorde, was not welcome in populated areas and so Concorde was restricted to flights over the ocean. The fatal event for Concorde, however, came in July 2000 when Air France Flight 4590 crashed after take-off, en route to New York, before even leaving France, killing everyone on board. Subsequent reductions in ticket sales meant that the decision to retire Concorde was taken in April 2003 and attempts by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic to purchase the British Airway’s Concorde fleet were not successful.
Sadly, fate cut short the service life of Concorde but she will always be remembered as the lightning bolt of the skies; able to go higher, faster and louder than any other commercial aeroplane. Her legacy survives in the likes of the Boeing 777, which make use of the electronic fly-by-wire acceleration systems that were first introduced in Concorde.

Result of: Fails to obey traffic light AGB325 - School Zone
In an email received 15th Oct 2012
As you were advised, File No.120918/0331 was received at PONSONBY on 25/09/2012. I have no idea where it had been or why it took so long to get to this office. As explained, it was by now some four months old, hence the matter being filed. There are time constraints placed on Police in law.
I can not comment on files being lost as I have no knowledge re those matters.
Please be advised again, your type of complaints, will more than likely NOT be followed up on unless crashes have occurred.
I understand that this has been reinforced to you on numerous occasions by officers more senior than me.
I have one full-time investigator on my unit. Police do not have the staff/resources to investigate every single minor complaint that is made. Police will always prioritise files and only investigate those matters that warrant/require investigation.
No further correspondence will be entered into re this matter.

Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2012 11:39:11 +1200
Dear Craig
I think I am correct in guessing this Police File 120918/0331 relates to two vehicles, Registration numbers AGB325 FGR289 I reported for failing to obey traffic lights. One in a School Zone and one just out of the School Zone, both with School Children present. I also think I would be correct in guessing your letter relates to a follow up I made on these Formal Complaints that were originally made on delivered to Auckland Central Police at 11:44am on the 30th of May 2012 only eight days after the incidents on the 22nd of May 2012. Please let me know what is happening with the original complaints as I am sure these would have been processed by now. I certainly would not expect you to follow up on a complaint made four months after the fact, though with good video evidence and pictures of the offenders supplied even if I had not reported the incidents within eight days you may well still feel obliged to follow up dangerous behaviour around School Children.
Please see attached scan of the courier bag, ticket number, and the proof of delivery at Auckland Central Police. I note that the Officer that signed for the complaints is the same officer that signed for the four complaints that Henderson have recently told me the original Formal Complains were/are lost. This could just be a coincidence and my complaints may be routinely being lost elsewhere, but it does sound highly unlikely that yet more of my complaints have been lost.
I look forward to having my confidence in the Police restored.
Your sincerely
In a letter dated 25 September 2012

Material Provocations with Ken Smith MLA '86, Andrea Cochran MLA '79, and James Lord MLA '96
3/22/16:
In an era of singular focus on environmental issues, how do we characterize other aspects of design, such as the role materials play in questions of expression, aesthetic sensibility, form, and perception? Three leading landscape architects will discuss how they communicate affective qualities in the landscape through specific material manipulations. Rather than being either merely decorative or sustainable, materials have the capacity to engage cognition, engage cultural discourse, and construct difference in otherwise homogeneous environments, offering a critique to the idea of landscape as a neutral surface for events. Moderated by Anita Berrizbeitia, professor of landscape architecture and chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture.
Andrea Cochran, FASLA, winner of the 2014 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Landscape Architecture, believes that landscape architecture has the power to alter perceptions and ultimately initiate a deeper respect for the environment. Central to this belief is a conviction that materials possess inherent psychological content. Cochran begins her designs by envisioning how one will feel in the place. Through carefully selecting materials for their visual and sensorial qualities, and paying special attention to craft, her work elicits strong emotional responses in the landscapes. Though the overall spatial configuration of a project drives the design, ultimately materials support the integrity of the space and maximize the experience of the user. Cochran’s seventeen-person studio, Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture (ACLA), is set apart by an emphasis on the experiential and material quality of built work, and effectively pursuing design excellence from a project’s inception to diligent oversight of its construction. A cross-pollination of ideas amongst project types is critical to the practice; experimentation pursued in smaller projects, where there is a greater ability to take risks, informs innovations at a civic scale.
James A. Lord founded Surfacedesign in 2001, his 27 years of experience and design vision lead the firm’s diverse portfolio of award-winning landscapes. Through leadership and innovative design, James has established Surfacedesign’s international reputation in urban design and sustainable landscape architecture in such notable projects as the AIA-award winning Smithsonian Masterplan, Auckland International Airport, Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary Plaza and ASLA award-winning IBM Plaza Honolulu. James' ideals-balancing culture, ecology and design vision with fiscal realities to ultimately create poetic spaces and experiences resonate through the office, no matter how big or small the project.
Surfacedesign is a landscape architecture and urban design firm based in San Francisco, California. This internationally award-winning practice focuses on creating dynamic parks, campuses, plazas, waterfronts, civic landscapes and private gardens. Under the leadership of James A. Lord, Roderick Wyllie and Geoff di Girolamo, a multidisciplinary staff of landscape architects, urban designers and architects provide clients with a wide range of services. The firm’s approach emphasizes and celebrates the unique context of each project, and in the case of a public client, the project’s constituency. Working to cultivate a common understanding about project objectives through community engagement, Surfacedesign employs innovative design strategies to balance social, environmental and cultural goals for each project.
Ken Smith is one of the best-known of a generation of landscape architects equally at home in the worlds of art, architecture, and urbanism. Trained in both design and the fine arts, he explores the relationship between art, contemporary culture, and landscape. Ken Smith Workshop, established in 1992 and based in New York City, is an award winning design firm with experience in a wide variety and scale of projects, practicing landscape design primarily in the realm of public space. Typical design problems involve making landscape space within the context of existing, reworked or complex urban fabric. This requires a strategic approach in making the strongest conceptual landscapes within the limits and possibilities of the site’s infrastructure, context and program. This has led to pushing beyond traditional landscape typologies of plaza, street, and garden to conceptualize landscapes that are hybridized from diverse traditions and influences of the contemporary culture.

SUMMARY
=======
Ford Motor Company is an American multinational automaker headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. It was founded by Henry Ford and incorporated on June 16, 1903. The company sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under the Ford brand and most luxury cars under the Lincoln brand. Ford also owns Brazilian SUV manufacturer Troller, an 8% stake in Aston Martin of the United Kingdom, and a 49% stake in Jiangling Motors of China. It also has joint-ventures in China (Changan Ford), Taiwan (Ford Lio Ho), Thailand (AutoAlliance Thailand), Turkey (Ford Otosan), and Russia (Ford Sollers). The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and is controlled by the Ford family; they have minority ownership but the majority of the voting power.Ford introduced methods for large-scale manufacturing of cars and large-scale management of an industrial workforce using elaborately engineered manufacturing sequences typified by moving assembly lines; by 1914, these methods were known around the world as Fordism. Ford's former UK subsidiaries Jaguar and Land Rover, acquired in 1989 and 2000 respectively, were sold to Tata Motors in March 2008. Ford owned the Swedish automaker Volvo from 1999 to 2010. In 2011, Ford discontinued the Mercury brand, under which it had marketed entry-level luxury cars in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Middle East since 1938.
Ford is the second-largest U.S.-based automaker (behind General Motors) and the fifth-largest in the world (behind Toyota, VW, Hyundai-Kia and General Motors) based on 2015 vehicle production. At the end of 2010, Ford was the fifth largest automaker in Europe. The company went public in 1956 but the Ford family, through special Class B shares, still retain 40 percent voting rights. During the financial crisis at the beginning of the 21st century, it was close to bankruptcy, but it has since returned to profitability. Ford was the eleventh-ranked overall American-based company in the 2018 Fortune 500 list, based on global revenues in 2017 of $156.7 billion. In 2008, Ford produced 5.532 million automobiles and employed about 213,000 employees at around 90 plants and facilities worldwide.

Ford Motor Company is an American multinational automaker that has its main headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. It was founded by Henry Ford and incorporated on June 16, 1903. The company sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under the Ford brand and most luxury cars under the Lincoln brand. Ford also owns Brazilian SUV manufacturer Troller, an 8% stake in Aston Martin of the United Kingdom and a 32% stake in Jiangling Motors. Ford's former UK subsidiaries Jaguar and Land Rover, acquired in 1989 and 2000 respectively, were sold to Tata Motors of India in March 2008.

Our Miss Brooks: Exchanging Gifts / Halloween Party / Elephant Mascot / The Party Line
Our Miss Brooks is an American situation comedy starring Eve Arden as a sardonic high school English teacher. It began as a radio show broadcast from 1948 to 1957. When the show was adapted to television (1952--56), it became one of the medium's earliest hits. In 1956, the sitcom was adapted for big screen in the film of the same name.
Connie (Constance) Brooks (Eve Arden), an English teacher at fictional Madison High School.
Osgood Conklin (Gale Gordon), blustery, gruff, crooked and unsympathetic Madison High principal, a near-constant pain to his faculty and students. (Conklin was played by Joseph Forte in the show's first episode; Gordon succeeded him for the rest of the series' run.) Occasionally Conklin would rig competitions at the school--such as that for prom queen--so that his daughter Harriet would win.
Walter Denton (Richard Crenna, billed at the time as Dick Crenna), a Madison High student, well-intentioned and clumsy, with a nasally high, cracking voice, often driving Miss Brooks (his self-professed favorite teacher) to school in a broken-down jalopy. Miss Brooks' references to her own usually-in-the-shop car became one of the show's running gags.
Philip Boynton (Jeff Chandler on radio, billed sometimes under his birth name Ira Grossel); Robert Rockwell on both radio and television), Madison High biology teacher, the shy and often clueless object of Miss Brooks' affections.
Margaret Davis (Jane Morgan), Miss Brooks' absentminded landlady, whose two trademarks are a cat named Minerva, and a penchant for whipping up exotic and often inedible breakfasts.
Harriet Conklin (Gloria McMillan), Madison High student and daughter of principal Conklin. A sometime love interest for Walter Denton, Harriet was honest and guileless with none of her father's malevolence and dishonesty.
Stretch (Fabian) Snodgrass (Leonard Smith), dull-witted Madison High athletic star and Walter's best friend.
Daisy Enright (Mary Jane Croft), Madison High English teacher, and a scheming professional and romantic rival to Miss Brooks.
Jacques Monet (Gerald Mohr), a French teacher.
Our Miss Brooks was a hit on radio from the outset; within eight months of its launch as a regular series, the show landed several honors, including four for Eve Arden, who won polls in four individual publications of the time. Arden had actually been the third choice to play the title role. Harry Ackerman, West Coast director of programming, wanted Shirley Booth for the part, but as he told historian Gerald Nachman many years later, he realized Booth was too focused on the underpaid downside of public school teaching at the time to have fun with the role.
Lucille Ball was believed to have been the next choice, but she was already committed to My Favorite Husband and didn't audition. Chairman Bill Paley, who was friendly with Arden, persuaded her to audition for the part. With a slightly rewritten audition script--Osgood Conklin, for example, was originally written as a school board president but was now written as the incoming new Madison principal--Arden agreed to give the newly-revamped show a try.
Produced by Larry Berns and written by director Al Lewis, Our Miss Brooks premiered on July 19, 1948. According to radio critic John Crosby, her lines were very feline in dialogue scenes with principal Conklin and would-be boyfriend Boynton, with sharp, witty comebacks. The interplay between the cast--blustery Conklin, nebbishy Denton, accommodating Harriet, absentminded Mrs. Davis, clueless Boynton, scheming Miss Enright--also received positive reviews.
Arden won a radio listeners' poll by Radio Mirror magazine as the top ranking comedienne of 1948-49, receiving her award at the end of an Our Miss Brooks broadcast that March. I'm certainly going to try in the coming months to merit the honor you've bestowed upon me, because I understand that if I win this two years in a row, I get to keep Mr. Boynton, she joked. But she was also a hit with the critics; a winter 1949 poll of newspaper and magazine radio editors taken by Motion Picture Daily named her the year's best radio comedienne.
For its entire radio life, the show was sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive-Peet, promoting Palmolive soap, Lustre Creme shampoo and Toni hair care products. The radio series continued until 1957, a year after its television life ended.
Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
