STORYLINE :
Thailand conducted Southeast Asia's largest tsunami evacuation drill on Wednesday, along the Andaman coast that was devastated in 2004 by giant waves which were generated by an underwater earthquake and which killed more than 8-thousand people in Thailand alone.
About 5-thousand people participated in the drill at Patong beach, the biggest of 17 points on the resort island of Phuket, 680 kilometres (420 miles) south of Bangkok.
The drill started with an alarm, then announcements in English and several other languages that there was an earthquake and a tsunami was possible, so people should evacuate to high ground.
Participants followed tsunami evacuation routes from the beach to the hills farther inland, including people who were acting as if they were injured and needed help to move.
I think that this exercise, this drill, is a very good idea because it will certainly improve co-operation between rescue workers and tourists, said Andreas Kessler, a German tourist.
It feels safer having gone through the exercise . After the catastrophe here in 2004, it is important to have an evacuation plan, added Arnfinn Gjosund, a Norwegian tourist.
The December 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami killed 8,212 people in Thailand, including foreigners on holiday at five-star resorts, as well as local residents who mostly lived in fishing communities that line the Andaman coast.
Some 230,000 people in a dozen countries around the Indian Ocean rim were killed or left missing and presumed dead in the disaster.

Drive from Wat Chalong to Phuket Bay, Phuket, Thailand ( 2 )
Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, located in the Andaman Sea of southern Thailand. The island is mostly mountainous with a mountain range in the west of the island from the north to the south. The mountains of Phuket form the southern end of the Phuket mountain range, which ranges for 440 km from the Kra Isthmus. The highest elevation of the island is Mai Thao Sip Song (Twelve Canes), at 529 m above sea level.
It is estimated that Phuket has a total area of about 570 square kilometres (including the provinces other islands). Phuket is about 536 miles (862 kilometres) south of Bangkok, and covers an area of about 134,178 acres (543 square kilometres) excluding small islets. It is estimated that if all its 39 other small islands are included, Phuket Province will cover an area of about 145,792 acres (590 square kilometres). The island total length, from north to south, is estimated at 30 miles (48.7 kilometres) and 13 miles (21.3 kilometres) wide.
Phuket's topology is exceptional with 70 percent of its area covered with mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island. The island does not have any major rivers except for a total of nine brooks and creeks.
Forest, rubber and palm oil plantations cover 60% of the island. The western coast has several sandy beaches, while on the east coast beaches are more often muddy. Near the southernmost point is Laem Promthep (Brahma's Cape), which is a popular sunset viewing point. In the mountainous north of the island is the Khao Phra Thaeo Non-hunting Area, protecting more than 20 km² of rainforest. The three highest peaks of this reserve are the Khao Prathiu (384 mtrs), Khao Bang Pae (388 mtrs) and Khao Phara (422 mtrs). The Sirinat National Park on the northwestern coast was established in 1981 and protects an area of 90 km² (68 km² marine area), including the Nai Yang beach where sea turtles lay their eggs.
One of the most popular tourist areas on Phuket is Patong Beach on the central western coast, perhaps owing to the easy access to its wide and long beach. Most of Phuket's nightlife and its cheap shopping is located in Patong, and the area has become increasingly developed. Patong means the forest filled with banana leaves in Thai. Other popular beaches are located south of Patong. In a counterclockwise direction these include Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, and around the southern tip of the island, Nai Harn Beach and Rawai. To the north of Patong are Kamala Beach, Surin Beach and Bang Tao Beach. These areas are generally much less developed than Patong, and sought out by individuals, families and other groups with a preference for more relaxed and less crowded environs than Patong. There are many islands to the southeast, including Bon Island, just a short boat trip away. There are several coral islands to the south of Phuket, the Similan Islands lie to the north west, and Phi Phi Islands to the south east. Islanders engage in a lively tourist trade, catering to snorkellers and scuba divers.
Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2015
During Phuket’s tin mining boom 200 years ago, many Chinese migrants came to the island to work in the mines. To keep the workers entertained, every year a Chinese opera troupe was invited to perform.
In 1825, some of the performers in the visiting troupe fell ill. They began to cleanse their bodies by eating a vegetarian diet for nine days and performing rituals in honor of two emperor gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok Ong Sone Teh. Their health improved and the workers and local people on Phuket wanted to find out more about how this happened.
One man from Phuket went back to China with the troupe and returned carrying sacred incense smoke and other holy items. When the people heard that he had returned, they went in procession to bring him and his sacred cargo back to the town. This was the origin of the processions that are such a huge part of the festival today.
Ma Song are devotees whom the gods enter during the festival. They manifest supernatural powers and perform self-mutilations in order to shift evil from individuals onto themselves, and to bring the community good luck. Ma Song fall into two categories: those who, having had an intimation of impending doom, want to extend their lives; and people specially chosen by the gods for their moral qualities.
The ma song are seen walking in the processions in a state of enchantment, usually with their cheeks and other body parts pierced. The ma song believe that if they take on these painful acts they will not only improve their lives but those of others in their community. It’s a way to make merit. Others are said to have no choice: the gods possess their bodies whether they want to join the festival or not.
Throughout the festival fireworks and drums are sounded, especially during ceremonies. It is held that the louder they are the better, because the noise drives away evil spirits.
Participants in the fest keep to a strict vegetarian diet to make themselves strong in mind and body; they refrain from all vice, eating animal flesh, and killing animals. The festival thus promotes good hygiene, brightness and inner peace.

Significance of Vegetarian Festival in Phuket
Special Reort for Andaman News NBT (VHF dial) + FM90.5 Radio Thailand at 8.30am & perhaps relays/repeats on local Cable TV channel 1, broadcast to Phang Nga, Krabi & Phuket provinces, Friday 12th September 2008 & Contact AndamanNews@yahoo.com
Around the end of September
& early October each year,
the most notable event of Phuket island
is not on the beach but in the city & old town.
People wear white and abstain from meat.
Flags are put up decorating the whole island.
The vegetarian festival has begun.
From the 1st day of the 9th lunar month
until the 9th day, totally 9 days and 9 nights,
is when Chinese decedents in Phuket
keep to Jia Chai in Hokkien Chinese
which means eating vegetables.
In Phuket Vegetarian is Kiew Ong Chai
It originates from 4 Chinese letters.
They are Kiew, Ong, Seng Houy
which means ceremony.
Seng is the celebration of the 9 Emperor Gods.
The 9 Chinese Emperor Gods
are invited through 9 lanterns
representing 2 Emperor Gods,
Kiew Ong Tai The & Yok Ong Song The
who preside over the ceremony.
Before the 1st day of the 9th lunar month,
in the early evening participants gather
at many shrines, mostly in the city,
to attend important ritual ceremonies.
The pole raised in front of Chinese shrines
to hang 9 lanterns,
signifies that 9 days from now,
participants would observe
the long tradition of belief & faith
in a united way.
During the festival the so-called Ma Song,
or entranced devotees,
believed to be Mediums for God
or ancient Chinese who performed good deeds,
perform ascetic displays.
Ma Songs are entranced devotees
whom Gods enter during the fest.
Its part of the ritual ceremony.
The important ritual activities,
like street processions,
are eagerly waited for by people.
After the Gods are invited to be in a Ma Song,
they walk tirelessly through communities.
The Gods carriers are accompanied
along the way in the procession.
It is believed the MaSong are taking sufferings for the vegetarian participants
by torturing themselves,
not only giving aesthetic displays.
For the body piercing, we allow them
to use objects stated in the legend.
As for the piercing
or what we call supernatural powers,
it is not that they want to show off,
but purely to bear suffering for us.
Along both sides of roads,
people put up altars of worship with offerings.
It is crowded with participants & tourists
to worship or observe the processions.
Firecrackers are very loud sounds
to welcome the procession.
During the festival, firecrackers are used extensively across the island.
After 9 days, the 9 lanterns are brought down, to signify the end of the festival.
Religious & ritual ceremonies
during the vegetarian festival,
not only remind us of human life,
but also strengthen relations
among human beings
& those with sacred powers,
which people cannot prove scientifically.

The second edition of the Phuket Film Festival last held in October 2007 will be in June 2009.
The second edition of the Phuket Film Festival is gearing up for a June 4-11 2009 start with the on-line launch of its website phuketfilmfestival.asia which went online on September 11, 2008. The Phuket Film Festival is also pleased to be one of the first websites in the world to use the new .asia domain addresses.
The organizer said the beginning of June is the best time for a film festival in Thailand as the Cannes international film festival is just ending and many film industry folk slip into the high end spas in the Kingdom to chill while the Shanghai International Film Festival is in mid June, so the Phuket Film Festival is hoping to catch film festival professionals and several films as they make the circuit. Program of about 50 - 60 films will be similar to the mix of award winning film festival films screened in October 2007. A People's Choice Awards will once again be held contributing to the Festivals goal of being a peoples fun festival.
