On road test day, your job is to take away the driving examiner's right to fail you - nothing more, nothing less. If you've practiced, that job is a simple task.
Driving is NOT a spectator sport, and you must practice to be prepared for road test day. Remember, we do what we practice, so the more you drive in preparation for your road test, the higher probability of success you are going to have on your driver's license road test day.
If you haven’t taken driver training with a driving school, be sure to hire a driving school to take you out on a practice road test.
A driving instructor will identify the gaps in your driving abilities, skills, and knowledge so you will be better prepared. Keep in mind, driving schools teach drivers how to pass a road test every day!
Importantly, if you make a mistake on the road test, move on quickly - do not dwell on the mistake. If you dwell on the mistake, your distraction will cause you to make more mistakes. And some times the driving examiner may not have even seen the mistake.
Speed and space management are the 2 biggest components of a driver's license road test. Be sure to drive the posted speed limit for the speed of the traffic flow - whichever is less. As well, stay away from other traffic, vehicles, road users, pedestrians and fixed objects.
In addition to speed and space management, observation and communication are the other two fundamental components that make up a road test. You must demonstrate to the examiner that you have a scanning pattern that allows you to interpret and predict traffic patterns.
As well, the scanning pattern is looking in the mirrors and monitoring the gauges on the dash of your vehicle.
And for the purposes of observing, you must shoulder check at least twice for every turn and lateral movement. You must shoulder check two times when making lane changes.
When communicating with other traffic, you must activate your turn signal approximately 1/2 block before making a turn.
And it is suggested that you have three flashes on the turn signal before making any lateral movement or lane changes.
To review...the 4 fundamental components of any road test are:
1) speed management
2) space management
3) observation
4) communication
Demonstrate competency in these 4 basic components of the road test, and you will have taken away the examiner's right to fail you.
Good luck on your road test.

Few drivers fail a road test for just one action. Most who fail a road test are simply not prepared with the skills, abilities and techniques that are required to pass a road test first time.
The key to driving well and being fully prepared for a road test are slow-speed manoeuvres. These will improve your overall driving, give you mastery of the primary controls and teach you where the vehicle is in space and place.
These videos will show you exercises that will get you started with learning to drive:
These are the videos showing the slow-speed manoeuvres that you can be asked to do on a road test:
Almost all road test, regardless of where you are in the world are going to have you reverse stall park, parallel park, and execute a 3-point turn. There are others that you may be asked to do, but those slow-speed manoeuvres are the main components of an on-road test.

The four fundamental components of any road test are:
1) space management;
2) speed management;
3) observation;
4) communication.
Regardless of class and regardless of location in the world, these four fundamental components must be in place for your to pass your road test.
1) SPACE MANAGEMENT
You must get near other road users or fixed objects for the duration of your road test. You must maintain a 2-3 second following distance in a passenger vehicle and you must maintain a 5 second following distance in larger vehicles. And you must have one lane of traffic between you and other pedestrians before turning.
See: How to Determine Following Distance
See: How Much Space Between Your Vehicle & Pedestrians When Turning
2) SPEED MANAGEMENT
1) posted speed limit;
2) flow of traffic;
3) capability of the vehicle.
which ever is less is the speed that you travel along the roadway.
See: Posted Speed Limits | Pass a Road Test SMART
3) OBSERVATION
For the purposes of a road test you must be continually scanning. You look at all intersections--left, centre, right--and railway crossing. Or any other place along the roadway where you could intersect and conflict with other road users. Observing includes, shoulder checking, 360° scans and looking out the back window when reversing.
Looking at other traffic and traffic patterns along the roadway will allow you to predict what other road users are doing and may do. it allows you to maintain good defensive posturing.
4) COMMUNICATION
You must communicate to other road users your intentions as you drive:
• lights;
• horn;
• eye contact;
• appropriate hand gestures;
• position of the vehicle on the roadway.
All these communicate to other road users your intentions and intended actions.
5) PRACTICE, PRACTICE & THEN PRACTICE SOME MORE
Driving is like music, martial arts, or writing. Any skill requires practice. And if you want to improve, you must have an excellent grasp of the fundamentals.
See: What are the Speed Limits in Road Test
See: How to Learn to Drive a Car & Slow-Speed Maneuvers
6) TECHNOLOGY
You CANNOT use a backup camera or backup sensors to reverse for the purposes of your road test. And you definitely cannot use the automated parallel parking feature.
7) DRIVING EXAMINERS
Driving is subjective; authorities move to convince you that it is not.
If you do not get enough seat time prior to your driving test, your fundamentals of driving are unlikely to be at an acceptable level to pass a road test. Driving examiners and other authorities are looking for a level of competency.
If you are unsuccessful on your road test, a driving examiner will--or you will interpret--often tell you that you failed because of one reason eg. your turns were too slow or you failed to scan intersections. That one thing most often, is not the only reason that you failed your road test. You often failed because you overall driving ability was substandard.
And every driving examiner has his/her quirks - something that really bugs them. A driving examiner here in Vernon, BC assigns demerits for wondering in the lane.
8) MOCK ROAD TEST
If you are not taking driving lessons, 7-10 days prior to your road test, hire a local driving school to do a mock road test. A driving examiner will be able to identify the gaps in your abilities, skills and knowledge for the purposes of a road test.

Good luck on your road test!

• Locate the parking space – is the space legal and is it approximately 1 ½ times the size of your car
• Mirror, signal, shoulder check and ensure that it is safe to stop and that there aren't any vehicles tailgating you
• Pull up beside the car (3 feet from the car—in front of the parking space you wish to back into--and stop
• Line up the rear bumpers—you will be able to see the rear corner of the vehicle through your rear right window
• Put the car into reverse so the reverse lights activate telling traffic that you are going to park
• Put on your right signal to communicate to other traffic that you are going to park
• Locate your 45° degree reference point, which should be straight out form the door post—the reference marker can be any fixed object
• Release the brake pedal and back slowly, steering rapidly all the way to the right without any throttle and backing until your are facing your reference point
• At this point the rear bumper of the stationary car should be in line with your steering wheel
• Straighten the wheels and back until the bumper of the parked car is ½ to 1/3 the way down your hood or the front of your car clears the parked car
• Steer rapidly all the way to the left and back until the car is straight in the space
• Stop
Put the transmission in “Drive” or a forward gear and pull forward
• You should be able to see the top of the rear bumper of the car in front of you
• When park your vehicle should be 6-9” inches from the curb
• Secure your vehicle by applying the parking brake and putting the transmission into park (or a forward gear if you’re driving a manual transmission)
When pulling up to parallel park off the other vehicle, take note of how far the other vehicle is from the curb. If the vehicle is far from the curb, you will have to drive farther into the space. If the vehicle is close to the space, you will have to drive less deep into the space. If it is a wide vehicle, that too will dictate that you drive farther into the space.

In the winter with snow, the parameters of a road test are somewhat different. For whatever reason, driving examiners don't like pushing a stuck car out o the snow. Therefore, there is some discretion in the parameters of the road test.
The 4 basic components of a road test still apply:
1) speed management
2) space management
3) observation
4) communication
You must drive the posted speed limit, the speed of the flow of traffic, or the speed that the conditions of the road allow. Watch the speedometer camera in the video to learn how fast you should drive.
You must manage speed around your vehicle and stop at the correct place at intersections. Often you will not be able to see the road markings because of the snow; therefore, come to a stop before the sidewalk. You will need to locate landmarks that will allow you to manage space and stop your vehicle in the correct position.
And when you approach an intersection, slow back from the intersection or place where you want to stop and then creep up. You don't want to get to where you want to stop and find out it's icy and you won't be able to get stopped!
The rules for communication and observation apply. Turn your lights on so other road users can see you, especially if it is overcast. And be sure to activate your turn signals anytime you are going to turn or move the vehicle laterally.
Observation is imperative for a road test. Be sure to clean all the snow off the glass and lights while doing your pre-trip in preparation for your road test. As well, be sure the licence plates are visible.
You must do 2 shoulder (head) checks every time you turn or move the vehicle laterally. This technique is especially important in the winter when snow banks and other obstacles are going to impede your vision. If you wear prescription glasses or it is sunny you will need sunglasses. Be sure to bring your glasses for the purposes of a road test.
Finally, when parking, you only need to get close to the snowbank. You do not want to get stuck on a road test, so stay a safe distance from the snowbank. If you are parking behind another vehicle when parallel parking, just get straight behind the other vehicle.
And if you are reverse stall (bay) parking, don't pay too much attention to the lines, because you may not be able to see the pavement markings. If possible, park beside another vehicle and you can use that vehicle as a landmark to make the parking easier.
Good luck on your road test!

On June 12, Canucks president Trevor Linden surprised St. Paul School principal Mrs. Moorehead at a special assembly organized by the outgoing grade 7 class and their teacher Mrs. Espinosa.
As part of the assembly, the talented grade 7 students performed Trevor, a parody of Bruno Mars' hit song Treasure.
Kudos to singers Anna, Sophia, Sharlene, and Renai for crushing the song. As well, to Eldric, Matthew, Joshua, and Mr. Kelly for the great instrumentation.

Lastly, a big thanks to the Canucks organization, Trevor Linden, and FIN for making the morning so memorable.
How to Position Your Hands on the Steering Wheel
For the purposes of a road test you must keep both hands on the steering wheel for the duration of the drive. Watch the video! Get PASS ROAD TEST CHECKLIST: SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ►
Your hands must be at either the 10 & 2 positions or 9 & 3. Current driver training theory is 8 & 4, as a result of air bags. In the event of a crash, and the air bags deploy, you could sustain injuries to your arms if they are in positions other than 8 & 4.
As well, when turning you do not have to manipulate the steering wheel back; simply open your fingers—keep your palms in contact with the steering wheel—and allow the wheel to turn.
When it is done turning, close you fingers and resume driving. For most curves during a drive, the steering wheel has to be turned only 1/4 turn, and both hands can remain on the wheel. Use hand-over-hand for turning corners. As well, keep you hands on the outside of the steering wheel.

When encountering a YIELD sign drivers and riders must give the right of way to other road users: pedestrians, vehicles, cyclists and scooters already in the intersection, the roundabout, or roadway onto which they're merging.
The right-of-way is always given, it is never taken! And more important, right-of-way is an integral skill and ability on a road test.
Finally, failing to give the right-of-way is one of the top three reasons for motor vehicle crashes. The other two are speeding and following too close.
