Tour in Cartagena with Mauricio
Ok. It all started with jugo mandarina. I bought some fresh squeezed tangerine juice from Maria. She was very nice & we chit chatted a bit. (She did most of the talking). Damn that juice was good. Over saunters Mauricio who announces he speaks English very well. He was selling Panama hats. Then he begins to try to regale me with tales of all the places in the U.S. he's been. He was a sailor for 30 years. Born in Cartagena with an African father. Retired & is relaxing. I ask him a question about some dudes I'd been seeing in the old city dressed totally in black including black makeup on their face, hands & chests (talk about black face...) They stand or sit motionless & hold a pole with a fake fish on it. Also black. What do they represent? I had been dying for someone to ask! Mauricio says they represent 7000 Africans. Couldn't get much more than that but I assume they were the 1st group of enslaved human beings here.
I am trying to get more & the next thing I know, he's saying C'mon & heading into the old city Ciudad Viaja (Colombian family, correct me if the name is wrong, I may have heard him wrong).
Now I was going in there anyway, but to eat some pargo rojo (red snapper) more arroz con coco y plantinos y jugo maracuya (passion fruit juice) but I thought perhaps Mauricio was leading the way to the African 7000. No. He began taking me through the city telling me the history of the buildings! I knew he wasn't doing this gratis even though he called me his friend (friend who was
gonna give him money) but I was like holy cow! how way cool! & was recording his impromptu lecture. But what does Jacquie Bird, Lucy's alter ego do? She had her FINGER ON THE WRONG BUTTON THUS TURNING OFF THE PHONE THUS ERASING THE FOOTAGE! duh-UH! But no fear intrepid ones. I did get a bunch of his lecture & here it is :-) for more about me, Jacquie Bird, Master Teacher/Choreographer/Jewelry Artist/Singer/Writer go to jacquiebird.com & silkwirejewelry.com

STORYLINE:
Bogota's annual international artisans fair, Explartesanias, is Latin America's biggest trade show specialising in arts and crafts.
Thousands of visitors from around the world come to see Colombia's natural and cultural diversity up close in the nation's capital.
Artisans from around the country gather here every year.
It's one of the only opportunities for indigenous Colombians living in remote, rural areas to display their crafts, sell them and meet fellow-craftsmen and women.
In 2001 the fair brought in some three-million (US) dollars in sales.
More than one million Colombians, 70 percent of them women, live from producing handicrafts.
They contribute around half a percent of Colombia's total gross domestic product.
The fair also provides incentive to conserve Colombia's cultural heritage.
Here you will find the best representations of traditional and contemporary handicrafts made from natural materials such as fibres, textiles, wood, silver, gold, clay and stone.
Explartesanias offers some time out for a country torn by a 38-year civil war.

World Fashion Week & Bogota Fashion Week & American Beauty Star by Adriana Lima Collections
World Fashion Week® and Bogota Fashion Week, a business platform of the Bogota Chamber of Commerce, collaborated to promote the expansion of Colombian fashion- especially in Latin America. The two aimed to promote international trade relations within the framework of the most recent edition of Bogota Fashion Week®.
In order to create opportunities for international cooperations that are mutually beneficial in terms of brand positioning for Colombian and Latin American designers, commercial platforms combined synergies and efforts to implement a contest.
This consisted of selecting the 10 best looks of Bogota Fashion Week 2017 that automatically became part of the racks of World Fashion Week® on the upcoming Hollywood reality TV show American Beauty Star, hosted by supermodel Adriana Lima. This opportunity, in parallel with the support to designers, seeks to achieve the empowerment of women in underdeveloped areas as a tool to combat poverty and achieve social inclusion.
For three long days a jury consisting of María Eugenia Castellanos (Uruguay), Walter Rodrigues (Brazil) and Ricardo Domingo (Barcelona)- international curators of Bogotá Fashion Week, toured the Market Experience of the platform and attended the catwalks in search of the most surprising, daring and risky pieces.
Those pieces that made an impression upon the judges were selected. The judges then performed a meticulous process of styling so that the selected looks were up to the challenge.
This is the happy result of materializing an agreement with a full spirit of friendly cooperation and on the faithful basis of mutual understanding, said Gloria Arribas, WFW director in Latin America.
The president of the Bogota Chamber of Commerce, Monica de Greiff, said that it is an opportunity for our designers to present their talent and creativity in an international setting. It will be a window that will show international audiences that design is a powerful tool in the value chain of the clothing, footwear, leather goods, and jewelry sectors of Bogotá and the region.
