On wednesday Year 3 visited Lunt Fort in Coventry. They learned all about life in a Roman fort and the armour and weapons used by soldiers of the day. There was a surprise in store when a Roman general arrived and everyone had to undertake training! The children have put together podcasts about their experiences.

Treasures of the Ashmolean Museum
David and Mariza’s travels take them this time to Baginton, near Coventry, where they visit the Lunt Roman Fort, which features a reconstructed timber gate, and a museum, in which you can don your own Roman armor. From there they drive to Witney to examine the ruins of a Roman villa sitting on a beautiful plain in the countryside. Finally, it’s off to Oxford and a tour of the Ashmolean Museum, which houses many fabulous ancient artifacts.

Our story of modern Coventry starts in 1939, the year the Second World War began, and continues to the present day.
The opening part of the Gallery looks at the city's experiences in the Second World War. As a centre of war production, Coventry was one of the first to suffer a major attack.
The post-war period saw a new sense of optimism and prosperity.Along with the new buildings, post-war Coventry saw the profile of its population change too. New citizens came here from Ireland, the former colonies of the British Empire and the new countries of the Commonwealth. The Gallery examines the contribution they have made to the life of the city through oral history, photographs, film and objects.
The Gallery traces the industrial decline of the city in the 1970s and 1980s, when the Two Tone music movement captured the anger and despair felt by many inhabitants.

#Coventry is a city in central #England. It’s known for the medieval Coventry Cathedral, which was left in ruins after a WWII bombing. A 20th-century replacement, with abstract stained glass, stands beside it. The collection at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum includes paintings of local heroine Lady Godiva. A statue of her, naked on horseback, is nearby. The 14th-century St. Mary’s Guildhall has a vaulted crypt. Displayed inside the Guildhall’s Great Hall, the huge Coventry Tapestry dates from around 1500 and depicts the Virgin Mary and members of the Royal Court. The Coventry Transport Museum displays historic vehicles, including Queen Mary’s 1935 Daimler and a 1943 wartime armoured car. East of the city centre, the Coventry Music Museum chronicles the city's musical heritage from Roman times to the present. To the south, ancient military re-enactments are held at Lunt Roman Fort, a partially reconstructed turf and timber fort. Southeast of town, Ryton Pools Country Park has picnic sites, walking trails and many species of birds.
HISTORY OF COVENTRY STATION
The original station was built in 1838 as part of the London and Birmingham Railway and could be entered from Warwick Road, where two flights of stairs took the passengers down to the platform. Within two years it had been replaced, with a new larger station, a few hundred feet nearer to Rugby, this time, accessed via Eaton Road. In the late 19th century the Coventry tram network extended to the station at Eaton Road. The original station remained in service as the station masters offices, until the station was redeveloped in the early 1960s by the London Midland Region of British Railways.

The new 1840 station saw a significant number of modifications and extensions over the years, there was an engine shed, water column and turntable, in its later days an inclined walkway from the platform directly to Warwick Road for summer excursions, and a parcel depot formed from old carriages. However, the station was constrained by bridges at either end of the station, Stoney Road Bridge to the south, and Warwick Road bridge to the north. The bridges effectively restricted the station to two lines, and prevented the platforms from being extended.
In the early 1960s both bridges were widened, and the old station finally demolished and re-built, this time with room for four platforms instead of two. At the time it was demolished in 1960, some parts of the old station were 120 years old. The station comprises a two-storey height booking hall with reinforced concrete frame, linked across an adjoining platform by a bridge to an island platform and a single sided platform. It was built to the designs of W R Headley, Regional Architect of the London Midland Region of British Railways and Derrick Shorten, the project architect.[1] It was formally reopened on 1 May 1962.[4][5][6] In 1995 it became a Grade II listed building.[1][7][8]
The new station featured a new parcel depot, used to manage the large number of mail order catalogue packages coming into Coventry at the time. The depot was serviced by its own platforms from the Rugby end. The depot has now been replaced by a multi-storey car park, although some of the platforms and an electrification gantry remain.
A £91 million redevelopment of the station is proposed to commence in 2019.[9] From the mid-2020s Coventry station is also planned to be served by the Coventry Very Light Rail system.[10]

Coventry ( (listen) KOV-ən-tree or KUV-) is a city, administrative centre and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, England.
Historically part of Warwickshire, at the 2011 census Coventry had a population of 316,915, making it the 9th largest city in England and the 12th largest in the United Kingdom. It is the second largest city in the West Midlands region, after Birmingham, and although proximite to the West Midlands conurbation, it is just outside it.
Coventry is 19 miles (31 km) east-southeast of Birmingham, 24 miles (39 km) southwest of Leicester, 11 miles (18 km) north of Warwick and 94 miles (151 km) northwest of London. Coventry is also the most central city in England, being only 11 miles (18 km) south-southwest of the country's geographical centre in Leicestershire and is located in the West Midlands.
The current Coventry Cathedral was built after the majority of the 14th century cathedral church of Saint Michael was destroyed by the Luftwaffe in the Coventry Blitz of 14 November 1940. Coventry motor companies have contributed significantly to the British motor industry. The city has three universities, Coventry University in the city centre, the University of Warwick on the southern outskirts and the smaller private Arden University, headquartered close to Coventry Airport.
On 7 December 2017, the city won the title of UK City of Culture 2021, after beating Paisley, Stoke-on-Trent, Swansea and Sunderland to the title. They will be the third title holder, of the quadrennial award which began in 2013.
