Enjoy impressive panoramic views overlooking the Waitemata harbour and Rangitoto Island!
The Michael J. Savage Memorial Park is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike in central Auckland. From here you have spectacular views of Auckland city. You're also able to visit the memorial of the park's namesake, Michael Joseph Savage, who founded the Welfare State and was the first Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand. The monument is such a great piece of New Zealand history and is surrounded by a pond and beautiful gardens you can walk through.
The parking spaces fill up quickly here but there's more than enough room for everyone, whether you're exercising, having a picnic or going for a leisurely stroll. The rolling grass areas are huge and give you a great view, no matter where you are. If you aren't travelling by car, there's pedestrian access on the west end of Mission Bay. If you forget to bring dessert with you, there's almost always an ice cream truck there in the afternoon.

Michael Joseph Savage Memorial, Auckland, New Zealand
Located at Auckland's Bastion Point, the memorial to Michael Joseph Savage, New Zealand's first Labour prime minister (1935-1940) overlooks the Waitemata Harbour. Like the Massey Memorial in Wellington, it is built on the site of a former gun emplacement dating from the 'Russian Scare' of the 1880s.
Mission Bay is a waterfront haven for all Aucklanders. Built around the idyllic, pohutukawa-lined beach and separated from the central city by a brief and beautiful drive, it’s no wonder that Mission Bay is celebrated destination for locals and visitors alike. No matter what the weather, Mission Bay welcomes everyone with open arms and a variety of experiences. Enjoy the parks, get active (by land and by sea) or simply relax and explore the surrounds. From the iconic fountain to dining with views of Rangitoto and the Waitemata Harbour, it truly is the bustling, vibrant heart of Auckland’s Eastern Bays.

It was Christmas day and the weather forecast stated that the weather was going to be rainy. However we decided to drive through Queen Street in Auckland to go to Mission Bay Beach. After a while, it started to rain heavily, so we had to return home early.
The information below is from the website
Situated off Tamaki Drive near Mission Bay, The Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park is set amongst 49 hectares of land with impressive panoramic views overlooking Waitemata harbour and Rangitoto Island.
The tall obelisk, sunken pool and landscaped gardens is a memorial to New Zealand's first Labour Prime Minister (1872 - 1940) and also the founder of the Welfare State.
In 1860, 1879 and 1880 Ngati Whatua leaders Tuhaere and Te Kawau assembled many North Island chiefs to the Kohimaramara Conference to establish a Maori Parliament. They sought to redress on land issues and equality under the law. In the 1930's the Maori sought remedy through Michael Savage, the serving Prime Minister of the Labour Government. With Maori support Labour had entered Parliament for the first time, beginning a long-standing relationship.
The park provides visitors with sweeping views of Auckland's city skyline and is a popular spot with coach tours and tourists.

Mission Bay
Mission Bay is situated in Auckland city on New Zealand's North Island, its a waterfront haven just a short drive outside the central city.
Mission Bay is a vibrant bustling little place and offers many things for you to see and do! A great place to get a ice cream and enjoy the view. Here you can take a stroll, jog or hire a bike and enjoy the fully paved shared path stretching 10km from St Helliers to Britomart in the city center. This path takes you past the iconic historical fountain, Kelly Tarlton's which is one of Auckland's top attractions, the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial park, play parks for the kids and plenty of restaurants, and all of this with a great view of Rangitoto.
Mission Bay takes its name from the Melanesian Mission established by the Anglican Bishop George Augustus Selwyn, this building, also known as the mission house once formed part of a larger complex of buildings, constructed of basalt from the nearby Rangitoto Island, it formed part of a naval training school, then an industrial school, and later restored as a museum and is now currently leased out as a restaurant.
The wharf close to Kelly Tarlton's offers some good fishing and great views over the city, and during the summer months a great place to cool off.
The Trevor Davis Memorial Fountain is one of the area's landmarks, it has been a source of beauty and interest since the 1950's, also a source of fun like this day when someone thought it was a good idea to put red cordial in the water, colouring the water red... The Orakei Local Board recently restored the fountain and now its even prettier at night.
The Michael Joseph Savage Memorial park is located at Auckland's Bastion Point, offering exceptional views over the city and Waitemata harbour. A great place for a family picnic. The memorial to Michael Joseph Savage, New Zealand's first Labour prime minister is built on the site of a former gun emplacement of the 1880s. The memorial was officially opened in March 1943, its an award winning piece of architecture surrounded by magnificent flower beds.
