The Lost City of Machu Picchu is a mysterious wonder; the Incas built there a city of stone, without the aid of wheels or iron tools. ... They built more than 600 terraces to prevent the city from sliding down the mountain. They designed a water supply system with a length of about 1 km.

For the Incas the architecture was especially important. The temples which were built around the city are oriented to catch the rays of the rising sun. The slopes of the roofs reflect the Huayna Picchu, the mountain that emerges after them. However, Machu Picchu has kept its secrets well, hiding for over 400 years its true meaning and purpose.

Apparently Machu Picchu was divided into three main areas: the residential area, with the home of the wise men or amautas, trapezoidal rooms occupied by ñustas or princesses and the popular and sacred neighborhood. The sacred neighborhood was dedicated to his principal deity Inti, Sun God; is in this area where are the main jewels of Intiwatana, the Temple of the Sun and the Room of the Three Windows.
More than 7,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu is the most visited tourist destination in Peru. A symbol of the Incan Empire and built around 1450AD, Machu Picchu was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.

Machu Picchu Full Day Tour
From catching the train in Cusco to a full day walking around the ancient Incan ruin, experience all there is at Machu Picchu.
The seventh day of my South America Trip.
Spending the day exploring the ruins of Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu (Quechua: Machu Pikchu) -- Old Mountain, pronounced [ˈmɑtʃu ˈpixtʃu]) is a pre-Columbian Inca site located 2,430 metres (7,970 ft) above sea level.[1][2] It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, which is 80 kilometres (50 mi) northwest of Cuzco and through which the Urubamba River flows. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438--1472). Often referred to as The Lost City of the Incas, it is perhaps the most familiar icon of the Inca World.
The Incas started building the estate around AD 1400 but it was abandoned as an official site for the Inca rulers a century later at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Although known locally, it was unknown to the outside world before being brought to international attention in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction.
Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.[2] Since it was not plundered by the Spanish when they conquered the Incas, it is especially important as a cultural site and is considered a sacred place.
Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its primary buildings are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. These are located in what is known by archaeologists as the Sacred District of Machu Picchu. In September 2007, Peru and Yale University reached an agreement regarding the return of artifacts which Hiram Bingham had removed from Machu Picchu in the early twentieth century.

#GettingfromCuscotoMachuPicchu
The easiest way to get to from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to take the train to Aguas Calientes (the town located a few miles from the site). It’s a scenic 3.5-hour trip each way along tracks that run right along the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley, with dramatic canyon walls on either side.
#MachuPicchuTours
The way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to walk as part of a multi-day Machu Picchu tour. Thousands of people hike to Machu Picchu each year. Here’s how.
The most famous way to hike to Machu Picchu is along a section of one of the hundreds of Incan Trails built as the empire expanded. Dozens of tour operators offer Inca Trail hikes to Machu Picchu, with varying durations and levels of comfort (though all require camping). Note that the Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu is closed for the entire month of February every year.
For those who would like a less crowded experience, or are looking to see and experience other aspects of Peru on their way to Machu Picchu, there are a number of diverse hiking alternatives: the second most popular way to hike to Machu Picchu is around massive Salkantay Mountain, one of the most imposing peaks in the Peruvian Andes at 20,569 feet. Many tour companies offer Salkantay Treks, but Kondor Path Tours Peru, an established and well-regarded Cusco tour company with a focus on sustainable and responsible tourism, offers the Express Salkantay Trek, which shaves a day off the normal itinerary for those who want to push their physical limits on their way to Machu Picchu.
Travelers interested in archaeology should consider the Choquequirao Tour with a Machu Picchu extension. This itinerary includes spectacular (but very tough) hiking in the steep Apurimac Canyon and exploration of the Choquequirao archaeological site before arriving at Aguas Calientes and then exploring Machu Picchu.
The Lares Trek Adventure of Peru offers a great combination of Andean hiking and cultural encounters within Andean - Quechua communities before arriving in Aguas Calientes to explore the ancient citadel.
#VinicuncaRainbowMountainTrek, also known as Montaña de Siete Colores or Rainbow Mountain, can be visited from Cusco, one of Peru’s most attractive tourist hubs, from where you can also visit Machu Picchu. The top of Rainbow Mountain sits at 5,100 m / 16,732 feet.
Cusco City Tour, Once the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is now known for its archaeological richness and Spanish colonial architecture. Climb up to the Archeological Park of Sacsayhuaman and visit a fortress with the same name, a beautiful place that radiates peace and quiet. Admire the enormous rocks measuring up to 4 meters high that were used in its construction.
Next, head to Q'enqo and the ancient temple of the Puma, where you observe an altar in the inner part of a huge rock that was once used for sacrifices, and then Tambomachay, once believed to be sacred fountains of life and health. On the way, take in a panoramic view from Puca Pucara, a watchtower that controlled the entrance to the city.
