Mädler Passage, Leipzig, Germany - Mädlerpassage - Historic Indoor Mall
On my first visit to Leipzig, I was enchanted by all of the passages, or covered malls that were scattered throughout the city. You can see how it was the original influence for the typical American shopping mall. Although the passages are covered, there is no door. They are open air in the sense that the wind blows through them.
The passages are all very old and very ornate. Typical design elements include detailed stonework, flooring, and ceilings. Madler Passage (Mädlerpassage) is located in the center of Leipzig, on Grimmaische Street and Neumarkt.
The current Madler Passage building was constructed between 1912 and 1914. The new structure replaced the famous Auerbach's Cellar and the luggage factory located next door. There are about 20 restaurants and shops located in Madler Passage. It's a nice historical place to shop or stop for a cappuccino. Madler's Passage is especially nice in the winter months, because it provides just enough relief from the cold while allowing for the benefit of fresh air.
Madler's Passage is worth a visit when visiting Leipzig. Here's a partial list of tenants:
Aigner, AH Tischkultur & Accessoires, al grano!, Atelier Farid, Barmer GEK Leipzig, Basler Fashion, Bazar Royal, CHRIST German Leather Fashion, Deutsche Grundstücksauktionen AG, Falke, Gourmétage, GRUENDEL Rechtsanwälte, Ingrid Janik's Schreib & Stil, J. C. Woyzeck, Juwelier Wempe, Kabarett Sanftwut, Kümmel-Apotheke, Lacoste, Laderma, Levatio, LLOYD, Luke • Robel & Francke Rechtsanwälte, Mädler KG (Verwaltung), Marc O'Polo, Mephisto-Bar, Montblanc Deutschland, SCALA, SIEBER BRILLEN, SPIGA, Swarovski, Thiele, Ines, Werbegemeinschaft Mädler-Passage, Wolford Deutschland.

The Mädlerpassage is a covered retail, restoration and service complex located in the center of Leipzig (Grimmaische Straße / Neumarkt) and at the same time one of the few completely preserved and most magnificent shopping arcades in the Messestadt.
The property was built between 1530 and 1911 with the building complex Auerbachs Hof . On January 1, 1911 Auerbachs yard and a neighboring property was sold to the suitcase and leather manufacturer Anton Mädler (1864-1925). This demolished all buildings and from 1912 to 1914 erected the Messehaus Mädler-Passage to plans by the architect Theodor Kösser .
The result was a five-story passage house with a 142 m long, four-story passage. The arched portal at the passage entrance is flanked by two life-size female robes carrying grapes and a vase. They refer to the purpose of the house as a wine cellar ( Auerbachs Keller ) and fair house of the sectors porcelain, ceramics and stoneware (exhibition area 5,700 m²). Since 1969 there is a porcelain chime from Meissen porcelain in the rotunda of the passage . Until 1989, the Mädler Passage was used as a trade fair center.
After the turnaround in 1991 Jürgen Schneider bought the majority of the property from the Mädler community of heirs for DM 80 million. He wanted to clean up the passage. This did not happen after his company went bankrupt. In 1995, the Commerzbank took over the majority.
From 1995 to 1997, the passage was extensively renovated and fed to a new use. Commerzbank sold its majority stake in Mädler-Passage Grundstück GmbH & Co. KG in 2008 to a company of the MIB Group, Berlin / Leipzig. The remaining shares belong to a granddaughter Anton Mädlers.
In addition to the historic Auerbachs Keller in the basement are located in the passage over 20 small shops and restaurants. The upper storeys no longer function as a trade fair location, but also provide space for office space and the cabaret Gentle Wrath .

Paul Tyralla's Passage Through Leipzig - An Historic City Tour
An unusual tour of the city of Leipzig took place a day before Jerome and Mirjam's wedding in April 2012. Dressed as his great grandfather, the city was introduced by Jerome to family and friends as it was when Paul Tyralla arrived in 1900.
At the same time, the 5hr excursion introduced Leipzig's more recent sustainable mobility measures such as the Promenaden Hauptbahnhof and the new City Tunnel, besides its tram and bicycle networks. Judging by guests and citizens' reactions, the tour could develop into a popular means for encouraging a 'modal shift' among school children and tourists to use more sustainable forms of transport.
Press releases for the occasion were made available in English and German, while a news item also ran on Europe's Local Transport Information Service called ELTIS. A guidebook produced to accompany the tour is available at: along with further information about Paul Tyralla, besides a powerpoint entitled Mobility in Leipzig: Yesterday and Today.
The short clip is set to a song called 'Leipzig' recorded at the height of the Cold War by Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin (see: in 1983, at a time when the city lay on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Filming was by Budapest-based Ferenc Komjati of

SzenePubTour Leipzig
The heart of the city center beats on the popular Drallewatsch pub mile found in 1996. The area comprises Richard-Wagner-Platz and Burgplatz including Große and Kleine Fleischergasse, Matthäikirchhof, Barfußgässchen, Klostergasse, Thomaskirchhof and Burgstraße.
Here every night people crowd and the chairs of the different bars, pubs and restaurant get mixed to form a colorful and lively picture. More than thirty restaurants attract guests to what the Leipzigers call jokingly the Bermuda Triangle, which has already seen many a missing person.
