We could think of no better way to follow our amazing safari trip than with more wildlife -- but this time, we're going underwater!
After saying our goodbyes to Zambia, we made our way to Mafia Island, Tanzania for a week of scuba diving at Shamba Kilole Eco Lodge. We weren't exactly sure what to expect from this leg of our trip, but it turned out to be a HUGE highlight! Diving in Mafia Island is outstanding and Shamba Kilole is a true hidden gem -- we couldn't have picked a better place to spend Christmas and ring in the New Year.

Diving in Mafia Island, Tanzania
Mafia Island is a small island in Tanzania located in the South of Zanzibar.
It is an amazing place for divers, it is a worldwide known spot. There are so many beautiful places, corals and fish. If you are lucky enough you will be able to see dolphins, shark reef or turtles.
I went to Mafia island for 10 days after spending 2 months in Zanzibar.
I fell in love with this island, I can only recommend you to go there.

Mafia Island est une petite île située en Tanzanie au Sud de Zanzibar. Cette île est mondialement reconnue pour ses spots de plongée. En effet, vous trouverez de magnifiques fonds marins avec une faune et une flore extrêmement riches!
Vous aurez peut être la chance de croiser des dauphins, tortues ou requins baleines.
Je suis allée à Mafia pendant 10 jours après mon séjour de 2 mois sur Zanzibar.
Cette île a été un réel coup de coeur pour moi donc je ne peux que vous conseiller d'y aller !

THIS IS MAFIA ISLAND | TANZANIA
Mafia Island is an incredible destination. Whether you want to swim with massive whale sharks, scuba dive in beautiful waters, or relax all day with the sound of the ocean, Mafia has it all.
We stayed at Big Blu Dive Center in Utende, and we saw the whale sharks in Kilindoni, which is where the airport is.

The second half of the video is shot on Chole Island, which is a short boat ride away from Mafia. It's a pretty unique cultural experience that's worth the trip.

BEST DIVING IN EAST AFRICA?! | Mafia Island Scuba Paradise
We spent 8 days in Mafia Island but could have easily spent a month! Every day and every dive brought something new and exciting underwater, from sea turtles to rays to seemingly endless species and colors of fish. We had perfect weather and visibility nearly every day, and thanks to Marco and Simba from Shamba Kilole, there was no end to the cool stuff we got to see all along the reefs of Mafia Island. Our time at Shamba Kilole was full of land-based highlights as well -- from local dance groups who came to help celebrate Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, to delicious fresh fruit every morning, to lazy afternoons spent in the pool, to DELICIOUS dinners topped off by the best lasagna ever (no joke). Thank you, Marco and Francesca and the entire Shamba Kilole team -- we cannot wait to return to Mafia!

Diving with Big Blu Mafia Island Dive Centre, Tanzania
Big Blu Mafia Island Dive Centre is a PADI 5* IDC Centre in Mafia Island offering daily dives, PADI courses, snorkelling and other activities in and around the Chole Bay area in Mafia Island Marine Park. Diving is planned according to the tides with a minimum of 2 dives being offered daily, sometimes 3rd and night dives as well. Mafia Island offers unique diving with varied topography and incredible biodiversity. Dive sites vary from walls, tropical reefs and muck dives. Mafia Island is a small island located in the south of Dar es Salam, Tanzania. This Island is not as well-known as Zanzibar but it is pure magic. If you ever have the chance to visit this place, do not hesitate!

This video is just a little overview of what is waiting for you there. Still uncrowded, you will experience some of the best diving of the indian ocean. A good alternative of Zanzibar. Check also Pemba !!

Zanzibar & Mafia Island - a trip to Tanzania
Zanzibar and Mafia Island are islands located on the coast of Tanzania. They are only a short plane ride away from Dar Es Salaam and offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. We were able to hang out here for some days and enjoyed the white beaches and turquoise water of the Indian Ocean as well as swimming with turtles and whale sharks.
