Exploring Yangon: Our first day in Myanmar
When we got to Yangon Myanmar we didn't know what to expect. Myanmar started allowing visitors in 2011 after 50 years of military regime so this country is one of the last places in the world that is still untouched by mass tourism.
In this video you can see the amazing Shwedagon Pagoda or the Golden Pagoda, Sule Pagoda, Maha Wizaya Pagoda.

Top 5 Pagodas in Yangon
The Shwedagon Pagoda is a Buddhist temple in Yangon, Myanmar and is an important Buddhist monument. This building preserves four Buddhist relics that belonged to the previous incarnations of Buddha and is an important temple for the Theravada tradition of Buddhism and for the people of Myanmar.
The Shwedagon Pagoda, which is also called the Golden Pagoda Myanmar is the most famous destination in the whole country and attracts crowds from all over the world. This 100-meter-high structure has been said to exist since the 6th century, so the pagoda is 2,600 years old, making Shwedagon the oldest pagoda in the world.
Shwe means Gold in Burmese, and Dagon means three hills, the ancient name of Yangon City where the stupa is located.
The pagoda is much more than a tourist attraction—it is the most important religious site in Myanmar. It is also a functioning, very active place of worship. Scores of monks, pilgrims, and devotees mix among tourists at the monument.
The gold seen on the stupa is made of genuine gold plates, covering the brick structure and attached by traditional rivets. People all over the country, as well as monarchs in its history, have donated gold to the pagoda to maintain it.
The main gold-plated dome is topped by a stupa containing over 7,000 diamonds, rubies, topaz and sapphires, the whole giddy concoction offset by a massive emerald positioned to reflect the last rays of the setting sun.
Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple is the most well-known Buddhist temple in Yangon. It houses one of the most revered reclining buddha images in the country. The Buddha image is 66 metres (217 ft) long, and one of the largest in Burma.
The patterns on the feet - I believe they call it the footprint - were not something I had seen before. Well worth a visit, whether you have 10 minutes or a couple of hours to spare.
The Nga Htat Gyi Pagoda in Yangon is known for its image of the enormous Buddha sitting.
When you arrive at the temple, you will immediately be impressed with a picture of a giant Buddha statue wearing a royal costume splendidly. The lip and the nails of Buddha statue are painted red.
Kaba Aye Pagoda is also known as the World Peace Pagoda, which is a relatively new pagoda in the Yangon city. The Pagoda has become an attractive destination for visitors, especially in the pilgrimage season.
Previously, the pagoda had been hit by a boom attack in connection with the detention of prisoners during the war, so that this pagoda was named the World Peace Pagoda, as words of warning and a reminder of peaceful preservation according to the Buddha preaching.
Belonging to the same location with Kaba Aye are Maha Pasana Cave. Its name “Maha Pasana” means Great Cave of Stone – a version of “Satta Panni Cave” in India which held the 1st Buddhist Council.
The Sule Pagoda is a Burmese stupa located in the heart of downtown Yangon, occupying the centre of the city and an important space in contemporary Burmese politics, ideology and geography. According to legend, it was built before the Shwedagon Pagoda during the time of the Buddha, making it more than 2,600 years old.
The Sule Pagoda has been the focal point of both Yangon and Burmese politics. It has served as a rallying point in both the 1988 uprising and 2007 Saffron Revollution.
A look at Botahtaung Pier and Pagoda in Yangon
In this video I take a look around the Botahtaung Pier and Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar. Botahtaung Pier is a quiet area to relax with a nice view of the river. It is also a place where you can arrange to go on a river cruise as part of your stay in Yangon. Right next to the pier you will find the famous Botahtaung Pagoda. It is a popular place to visit for Buddhists from around the World as it contains the Buddha's sacred hairs. You can enter the Pagoda to see the display of the sacred hairs and walk around the Temple space which is quiet and peaceful.

Kaba Aye Pagoda in Yangon
This pagoda was built 1952 for the 1954-56 sixth Buddhist Synod. The name in Myanmar means world peace to which this pagoda is dedicated.
There are several niches around the perimeter of the pagoda. Each contains a different Buddha statue, each representative of a style from a particular Buddhist country.
360 Video in Asia: Mirror Temple in Yangon, Myanmar - Sein Yaung Chi Pagoda
Watch this 360 Asia travel video and explore the strikingly ornate Sein Yaung Chi Pagoda on Shwedagon Pagoda Road in Yangon, Myanmar - also known as the 'Mirror Temple'. Covered with tens of thousands of mirror glass tiles, this small pagoda is one of the more visually interesting pagodas in Rangoon, Burma. It has a large Bodhi tree and four large Buddhas inside in the four directions of entrances. All in all, a lovely temple to visit especially for those waling to or from the Shwedagon pagoda. Make sure to dress and behave respectfully

# Exploring Yangon, Myanmar 2017
Second short trip to Yangon for a week (:
Most people just spend a couple of days in this former capital of Myanmar, and if you have an extra few days to spare here's a list of things you can do!
- Visit the Shwedagon Pagoda: the sunset in the evening was super beautiful, but also much more crowded than when I went at noon! If you have the time, walk from downtown yangon to the pagoda along Shwedagon road - there's hidden gems along the way including the Sein Yaung Chi Pagoda (or Diamond Reflections Pagoda), the Tomb of Queen Supayalat - the last queen of Burma, Maha Wizaya Pagoda and several tea shops along the way where you could get some food and drink.
- Street food at Chinatown Roadside Stalls - note that it's no longer on 19th street, it was moved further down towards first street, and is now located in the middle of the road rather than beside it
- Bogyoke Aung San Bazaar: huge bazaar with lots of local wares, heard the prices have been jacked up but as a tourist, it's still really affordable
- Yangon Circular Rail: it's a 3 hour journey for 200 kyat (roughly $0.15 USD) and it goes around the outskirts of Yangon. You'd see locals get up and go down the many stops to sell their foods and wares on this!
- National Museum: there are volunteer guides waiting in the lobby and you should definitely accept their offer to bring you around! We spent the whole day in the museum with our guide and it was a great because he told us stories and jokes. Highlight was definitely the Lion Throne Room.
- Giant Reclining Buddha at Kyauk Htat Gyi
- Kandawgyi Lake and Inya Lake: Parks in Yangon with many cafes around them
- Maha Bandula Park: spend a morning there people watching, you'd catch many local couples dating, kids playing at the playground, elderly folk just chilling at the independence monument
- Myanmar Plaza: possibly the largest and most international shopping mall in Yangon
- There's more and more cafes popping up in Yangon, one that we heard good reviews about was Cafe Del Seoul - the food and decor were really nice, just that it's 10km away from downtown!
If you dont have the time to do these, just take a stroll along Downtown Yangon and the morning markets and experience the buzz of this city (:

Mahapasana Cave in Yangon
The Mahapasana Cave (great cave) was built simultaneously with the Kaba Aye Pagoda and is located in the same complex. The cave is a replica of the Satta Panni cave, located in India, where the first Buddhist Synod was convened. The six entrances of The Maha Pasana Cave symbolize the Sixth Great Synod. The cave is 455 feet (139 m) long and 370 feet (110 m) wide. Inside, the assembly hall is 220 feet (67 m) long and 140 feet (43 m) wide.
The Mahapasana Cave also hosts religious examination called the Tipitakadhara Tipitaka Kovida Examinations, an extensive recitation, oral and written examination on the Tipitaka, the religious body of works in Theravada Buddhism.

Yangon's neglected Drug Elimination Museum
Opened to great fanfare by the military government in 2001, the Drug Elimination Museum is a relic of the junta's failed attempts to curb opium production in Myanmar's share of the Golden Triangle. Rundown, dilapidated, averaging less than 10 visitors a day and seemingly forgotten by the new government, its dedicated staff have nonetheless worked tirelessly to preserve its exhibits.
