Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park - Movie (HD)
California's history is defined by the era known as The Gold Rush, a peiod that began in 1849 when gold was discovered near Sacramento. From that moment on, California was known as The Golden State. But most people aren't aware that the gold rush ended when some of America's first environmental protection laws went into effect to stop hydraulic strip mining - the process of washing away hillsides to extract gold - and put the state on it's path to recovery.

Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park is located in the heart of gold country... just outside of Nevada City, CA in the northern Sierra Nevada mountain range.
It's just far enough out of the way that most have never heard of it.
Most also wouldn't know... the Malakoff Diggins mine was one of the first catalysts for major conservation and environmental protection measures in the United States.

Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park preserves the largest hydraulic mining site in California.
The 3,100-acre park features miles of hiking trails, full access into the 556-foot-long Hillary Tunnel… and a 7,847 foot bedrock tunnel that once served as a massive drain.
The mining pit is unfenced and completely accessible for hiking, swimming, picnicking and camping.
The cliffs were literally carved out of the landscape… by giant water cannons used in hydraulic mining between 1853 and 1884.
As a note of interest, the Malakoff mine became the impetus for one of the nation's first environmental protection measures.
Farmers in the Sacramento valley complained about mining tailings flooding their land and ruining their crops. And by 1883, the San Francisco Bay was estimated to be filling with silt at a rate of one foot per year.
Debris, silt, and millions of gallons of water used daily by the mine caused extensive damages.
Thousands of acres of rich farmland and property were destroyed, which prompted Sacramento valley farmers to file the lawsuit Woodruff v. North Bloomfield Mining and Gravel Company.
On January 7, 1884 hydraulic mining was finally made unlawful… effectively protecting valley farmers, the San Francisco Bay and surrounding environments thereafter.
Now all that remains are the rusting structures and machinery used in hydraulic mining.
The 'canyon' is 7,000 feet long as much as 3,000 feet wide and nearly 600 feet deep in places.
At an elevation of 3,248 feet, Malakoff Diggins generally has warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters.
Rain and snow fall usually from October until April, though no snow is evident here in December of 2017 - possibly due to the impacts of Global Warming, which hopefully will be the next great environmental challenge we resolve.

The Day:
Following a long travel day to the Gold Country from Los Angeles, we woke up ready to explore the region. First: we headed to Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park, where we took a Ranger-guided tour of the Gold Rush-era town of North Bloomfield. The town is almost perfectly preserved, down to the original windows on the buildings.
Following the tour, we went panning for gold with the equipment they will loan you at the North Bloomfield Museum, and though all we found was Fool's Gold, it was a fantastic way to cool off in the waters of Humbug Creek!
Refreshed, we headed off for a hike in the Diggins themselves, to observe up close the beauty that Nature has created out of man's destructive practices during the era of hydraulic strip mining.
We ended the day at a local swim hole in the Yuba river and Thai food at Sopa in Nevada City....Perfect!
