Argentina: Home of Malbec Wines
United Nations - Famous for its Malbec wines, Argentina is bringing various blends to tables around the world. But climate change is threatening the sustainability of the wine making industry forcing vineyard owners to adjust their production techniques to mitigate the effects a changing climate may have on Malbec wines in Mendoza province.

Malbec Wine Tour with #OWOW2017 - Luján de Cuyo Region of Mendoza, Argentina
What the French did in dismissing Malbec wines, the Argentinians perfect it. The Malbec Experience at Bodega Tierras Atlas was nothing short of amazing! This video short shows us pruning, learning about wine chemistry, drinking wine from stainless steel barrels to even going into the basement of a cellar and tasting a variety of malbec wines from wooden barrels. Oh and with the exception of our favorite Peruvian restaurant in Lima, the food and service at Tierras Atlas was beyond outstanding. One of the best restaurant we've eaten at in all of South America. Wondering if any of you ate a meal or had a specialty drink in a foreign country that was so good it made you want to return just to have another taste? How far would you travel?

Argentina Wine Tours - Mendoza: Land of Malbec
An emblematic grape of Argentina, the country with the largest area planted with Malbec in the world, this grape variety comes from Cahors, France, where it is called Cot. In order to develop its full potential, Malbec requires a wide variation between day and night temperatures and Mendoza is the perfect place for that. Mendoza (/mɛnˈdoʊzə/, American Spanish: [menˈdosa]), officially the City of Mendoza (Spanish: Ciudad de Mendoza) is the capital of the province of Mendoza in Argentina. It is located in the northern-central part of the province, in a region of foothills and high plains, on the eastern side of the Andes. As of the 2010 census [INDEC], Mendoza had a population of 115,041 with a metropolitan population of 1,055,679, making Greater Mendoza the fourth largest census metropolitan area in the country.
Ruta Nacional 7, the major road running between Buenos Aires and Santiago, runs through Mendoza. The city is a frequent stopover for climbers on their way to Aconcagua (the highest mountain in the Western and Southern Hemispheres) and for adventure travelers interested in mountaineering, hiking, horse riding, rafting, and other sports. In the winter, skiers come to the city for easy access to the Andes.
Two of the main industries of the Mendoza area are olive oil production and Argentine wine. The region around Greater Mendoza is the largest wine-producing area in Latin America. As such, Mendoza is one of the nine Great Wine Capitals,[1] and the city is an emerging enotourism destination and base for exploring the region's hundreds of wineries located along the Argentina -wikipdeia

Argentina's Wine Country ???? It's Not What We Expected! Mendoza Wine Tour. This is Hotel Club Tapiz.
We stayed at the a beautiful, small boutique hotel (Finca) called Club Tapiz just outside of Mendoza, Argentina in an area called Maipu. Maipu is a very popular area for wine in the Mendoza Region. While here we take you on a full tour of the hotel, including the old winery, the grounds including the pool, the restaurant and the gardens. We also take you on a tour of our room.
Later we head about 20 minutes away from Club Tapiz to their winery. Here we get to go on a full wine tour of the property and the vineyards. This ended up being one of the best wine tours we’ve ever done. It happened to be harvest season when we visited and therefore got an inside look (and taste) of the full wine making process. While here we got to taste wine is the various stages of production, even right out of the barrel. We also got to taste one of their best wines, a Malbec. Mendoza is best known for being the main producer of Malbec and you must try it when coming to the region.
Lastly, before we left the winery we got to visit the Llamas which live on the premisses!

Malbec may be the world’s most MISUNDERSTOOD grape - and I’m on a mission to set the record straight. For too long we have thought of Malbec as a one-dimensional spicy alternative to Cabernet, incapable of elegance and restraint. In this weeks episode I’m exploring the various iterations of Malbec from Argentina, from big and bombastic to nuanced and subtle. Catena Zapata has been one of the leading producers of the grape since the early 1900’s and has lead the charge for the research and development of the vineyards in Argentina. The American consumer is likely to have seen their entry level wine “Catena” on the shelves of their shop, but the higher tier wines in the portfolio are really where they flourish. The tasting today pits the two against each other, and offers a third inexpensive highly rated one that will be perfect to buy by the case for your next party. **small editing note, I put RHOC instead of RHBH!!!! MY APOLOGIES!!!!**

Each week I'm bringing you 2 great wines that not only have great value, but are actually delicious. Whether you are looking for that perfect Tuesday night wine or just want to know what the sommelier's are drinking on their night's off (God forbid we're fresh out of Burgundy) - the Weekly Wine Picks series has you covered.
------------------------------------------------------
After years of struggling trying to find great wines that were not only valuable but easily accessible, I've finally found a great solution!!! With friends and family scattered across the US, I constantly ran into the same situation. They'd ask me, What wine can I buy for $20-$30 that is great. The problem would always be the same - no two stores ever carry the same wine, and if they did, it was generally something I didn't feel was either great or worth the money. So for the past year I've been doing some extensive research.
I started first by identifying the types of wines I would recommend, and then reverse engineer from there. I started googling these wines to see who carried them and how often. Then I started actually ordering them - which is where it got tricky.
Some online retailers would claim to have them and then upon ordering would be out of the vintage or the wine entirely. Others would ship them but the cost of shipping was more than the actual bottle. Then one day, I got a big break - a retailer that was once chock full of crap wine started carrying wines that I was actually interested in buying. It was a revelation. I would get email after email announcing the arrival of this wine, and that producer, and good lord back-vintages!! What's more, is they offered a ONE-TIME YEARLY SHIPPING MEMBERSHIP for UNLIMITED SHIPPING FOR $49!!!!!!! I thought I hit a gold-mine. Surely it would be some 3rd tier shipping service that took a month to deliver.
Perplexed and cautious, I made my first order. Fast forward 2 days later and the wine, no joke, was on my doorstep (yes, you have to sign for the package). Properly packaged, the wine arrived in tact and seemed to have even been shipped in a temperature controlled environment. I ordered again, surely it wouldn't happen like this every time. But time and time again, the same thing would happen. I started experimenting with other states, same deal. I even had a corked bottle arrive once so I called them up and they shipped me a new one immediately, free of charge.
The company I am referring to is WINE.COM - they have undoubtedly knocked out every other competitor on the market - and that includes, I'm sorry to say Gary Vaynerchuck, Wine Library (I had high hopes for them - but they failed me too many times).
In this series, I will pick 2 of my favorite wines (I'll try to keep them under $30) from wine.com and do a quick review of them here with links to buy them below. I'll switch its up from week to week with reds, whites, and sparkling to keep it fresh! Make sure to subscribe to stay up to date and I'll look forward to your feedback in the comments below!

Cuvelier Los Andes Grand Malbec | Wine Review
Wine review, tasting notes, rating and flavor profile of 2014 Cuvelier los Andes Grand Malbec, a vino made in the Valle de Uco, mendoza, Argentina by Bordeaux Grand Cru makers with the healp of star consultant winemaker Michel Rolland.
Watch the full Episode #23 of 'Tasting with Julien' where Julien Miquel explains the Malbec red wines of Argentina, and compares a $20, a $50 (from Terrazas Los Andes) with this $100 Cuvelier Los Andes Grand Malbec and analyzes which one you should buy:
The story begins in 1804 when Henri Cuvelier set out to share his great passion for fine wine with his friends of the grand bourgeoisie residing in the rich and dynamic towns of the North of France, (Lille, Boulogne Sur Mer, Arras, Valenciennes…) To this aim, he created H. Cuvelier And Fils, a wine Merchant company whose rapid success continued to develop throughout the 19th century.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Paul Cuvelier and his young brother Albert, anticipating the inevitable rise in « château-bottled wines » to the detriment of the « tailor-made » blends of the wine merchants, decided to purchase top quality estates in the Bordeaux area. They bought Château Le Crock in 1903, then Château Camensac in 1912 and finally the prestigious Château Léoville Poyferré in 1920. It is interesting to note that, in early 1914, Paul Cuvelier had already come to Argentina, to discover the wines of Mendoza. He found them « pleasant to drink » although not adapted to the French taste at that time. He recommended a watchful eye be kept on their development. In 1946, the family group asked Max Cuvelier to create a second Fine Wine Merchant’s based in Bordeaux. It was, as it transpired, essential to have an address in the Pavé des Chartrons if one wished to be part of the Bordeaux wine world. This company has since flourished both in France and around the world.
In 1998 Bertrand Cuvelier made the happy choice of personally accompanying Michel Rolland in his great Argentine project, which was to become the« Clos de Los Siete »group. Three years later, Jean-Guy Cuvelier decided to join his cousin Bertrand in the joint aim of building a Winery and producing fine wines worthy of the family tradition. The agreement between Bertrand and Jean-Guy Cuvelier was symbolically signed in the great office of their common ancestor, Henri Cuvelier, in Lille-Haubourdin, in the north of France. Since then, the Winery has been built and each year the vines of Cuvelier Los Andes have contributed 50% of their production to « Clos de Los Siete », the wine signed by Michel Rolland. The success of this wine is worldwide due to the exceptional value for money it offers.
The 2003 yield has also allowed the production of the first edition of «Cuvelier Los Andes-Coleccion». Then the 2004 harvest saw the arrival of our first edition of «Cuvelier Los Andes - Grand Vin ». With the 2005, Cuvelier Los Andes S.A., aside from its significant contribution to «Clos de Los Siete», can now present three wines, produced with the help and advice of Michel Rolland: Coleccion - Grand Vin - Grand Malbec. The quality of these wines, produced from young wines, is well beyond our original hopes. Will the Argentine cousins rival in the future with the fine wines of Bordeaux. It is for the consumers to decide. Time will tell.
A last word: We are proud to announce that the new generation has decided to join the crew, taking on the sales and marketing of the Cuvelier Los Andes S.A. wines.
The Cuvelier Los Andes S.A. vineyard was planted in 1999 with a density of 5500 plants per hectare. Today the vineyard stretches over 55 hectares (136 acres) with 10 hectares still to plant.
The main grape variety is Malbec. We have also planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot. This enables us to create our own blended wines and also contribute to those of Clos de los Siete. Basking in the warm, dry climate of Mendoza, cooled by the refreshing night air of the Andes, our vines are ideally situated to express the character of their various grape varieties in this stony, alluvial gravel soil.
