The Alien Within – A Living Laboratory of Western Society / Malmö Konsthall
The Alien Within – A Living Laboratory of Western Society at Malmö Konsthall in Malmö (Sweden) is a project around the multi-media installation Animatograph – Icelandic Edition. Destroy Thingvellir, 2005, by the late German theater director, filmmaker, and visual artist Christoph Schlingensief (1960–2010). It's the first exhibition curated by Diana Baldon as new Director of Malmö Konsthall. It has its starting point in the multi-cultural character of Malmö, and the current political climate in and around Europe. Schlingensief's Animatograph installation is framed by documentation material presenting the genesis and development of this installation, and complemented by a think tank that includes talks, screenings, live concerts, and performances by Swedish and international artists such as, among others, Tania Bruguera, The Errorists (Hilary Koob-Sassen and Andreas Köhler), Jeuno JE Kim and Ewa Einhorn, the independent theatre group Institutet, as well as renowned scholars like filmmaker-theorist Trinh T. Minh-ha and sociologist Saskia Sassen. This video provides you with an exhibition walkthrough and an introduction to the project by Diana Baldon.

Malmö Castle - Museer - Malmöhus Castle in Malmö - Malmö, Sweden - History Museum, Tour Agency .
Malmö Castle - Museer - Malmöhus Castle in Malmö Malmö Castle - Malmö, Sweden - History Museum, Tour Agency ...There’s been a castle here since the mid 1400s, when a single monarch ruled over Sweden, Denmark and Norway. After that union dissolved, Malmö remained a part of Denmark and by 1542 the Danish king Kristian III had rebuilt the castle in its current form, with blood-red canon towers defending the city’s western flank.Later, when Sweden gained control of the region, work began on even more elaborate defences to keep the Danes out – including the deep moat you can see today. Despite their best efforts, Danish forces never managed to recapture the castle and the city has been Swedish ever since.Today Malmöhus Castle is probably the city’s most intriguing attraction. If you go, be sure to explore the attached museum galleries (built on the castle grounds in the 1930s), which show everything from contemporary art to exhibitions about the region’s geology. There’s one admission fee for the entire place, making it a great-value day out.The museum gallery dedicated to natural history – with its rather lame earthquake simulator – isn’t worth spending much time in, though kids might like gawping at the collection of stuffed animals, which contains species native to Sweden, including a surprisingly happy-looking brown bear.Just upstairs, there’s a gallery showcasing photo exhibitions and Nordic art. From here it’s a short walk to the section on Malmö’s historic development from small medieval settlement to strategic fort town. Unfortunately barely any of the exhibits are labelled in English; borrow one of the laminated guides on your way in.The highlight of a visit here is exploring the castle building itself. The fortress has served as a corrective prison, a mint for Danish coins, and a temporary royal residence, whose furnished rooms – full of centuries-old portraits – you can still wander through today. In the entrance hall, look out for the bible that belonged to the Danish king Christian IV. Printed in Copenhagen in 1633, it’s splendidly illustrated.

Rising from the ruins: Michael Rakowitz on rebuilding an ancient palace razed by Isis
Following the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, 8,000 artifacts went missing from the National Museum in Baghdad – an event widely regarded, recalls Michael Rakowitz, as a ‘loss for all of humanity’. Since 2007, the Chicago-based artist has been painstakingly recreating these lost artworks one at a time, using the packaging of Middle Eastern convenience food available in the US. Following Isis’s offensive in Iraq, he began to use the same technique to remake objects from the archeological sites the Islamists destroyed, the banality of the wrappers mapping a contemporary Iraqi experience in stark contrast with the one broadcast by mainstream media.
The series is collectively titled 'The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist', and its latest piece was presented in the Unlimited sector of Art Basel’s 2018 edition in Basel. For Room N, Northwest Palace of Nimrud (2018), Rakowitz reproduced the reliefs of the Assyrian Palace of Nimrud, which were reduced to rubble by fighters of the self-proclaimed Caliphate in 2016. In this exclusive interview, the artist talked to Art Basel about rescuing an Iraqi heritage endangered by the war.
