The Caves Underneath the Malt Cross in Nottingham
The Malt Cross is just off the Old Market Square, on St James Street in Nottingham centre. A great spot for food, a drink, and home to the Malt Cross gallery and music hall stage. The first place my wife took me when I first came to Nottingham.
The building was built in 1877 and it's the last 'working' Victorian Music Hall still standing in the north of England. Amazing inside, but equally amazing beneath, it's recently been given £1,385,400 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to expand into underground floors and caves. The floors under the Malt Cross, in Nottingham, have had various uses in the past (including as an Indian Restaurant and a Victorian roller skating rink) so I took the opportunity to grab some footage - for posterity - while I was there in early February 2013.

Weekday Cross, Hen Cross, Nottingham, and Robin Hood
There are two sites in Nottingham particularly associated with tales about Robin Hood entering the city disguised as either a butcher or a tanner to sell his wares on the market stalls. The first is Weekday Cross, on what was once Garner's Hill. This area was the busy centre of the original Saxon town of Snottingham, and would remain so until the Normans chose an alternative hill on which to build their Castle, an act which effectively divided the town into French and English boroughs. A stone column still marks the spot where a weekday market was held, the old cross long since gone. The steps surrounding the original cross were also used as a place for reading out public proclomations. Across the road the Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery stands where once was a Saxon fort, with dwellings carved out of the sandstone below. A few yards up the road is the Galleries of Justice, (formerly Shire hall), which held public executions as late as 1861. A set of stocks stood in this area, and beneath Shire Hall were once dungeons believed to have been in use as far back as King John's time. If so, it is not unreasonable to suggest that these were the dungeons said to have held Robin Hood after his arrest at nearby St Mary's.
Hen Cross, situated the other side of Nottingham Town Hall from the Market Square, was an ancient Saturday poultry market. By the mid 16th century the road was known as Hencrosse Row, suggesting it still had an identity separate from nearby Market Square, but in 1800 all trace of a cross marker was removed. Stories about Robin Hood say he came here disguised as a chicken vendor in order to spy on events in the city.

Rail Ale Trip to Nottingham
The latest outing by the Lincoln Rail Ale Club took them to Nottingham:
1 From the train station, head towards the City Centre, turn left on to Canal Street where you will find 'The Canal House'. Has an offering of fine selection of guest ales. Has a canal running through the middle of it.
Arr pub 12-45 and lunch
2 Take a walk up in to the Lace Market, to the 'Kean's Head' at 46 St Mary's Gate, NG1 1QA. The pub is tucked out of the way, at the side of St Mary's Church. The usual selection of Castle Rock Beers and guests are available here. The food is very good too.
Arrive 2pm
3 'The Cross Keys' at 15 Byard Lane, NG1 2JG has recently benefited from a major refurbishment. It offers a range of real ales (many from the Nottingham-based 'Navigation Brewery') in pleasant surroundings.
Arrive 2-45pm
4 'The Malt Cross' at 16 St James's Street, Nottingham, NG1 6FG was built in 1877 and is one of the few remaining Victorian Music Halls still standing. Its original purpose is still very much apparent. Pub offers a range of well selected, well kept cask ales. The 'Music Hall Bitter', made exclusively for the pub by Brewster's Brewery of Grantham is always very well kept and very popular.
Arrive 3-30pm
5 On the other side of Maid Marian Way you will find 'The Round House' at Royal Standard Place,Nottingham, NG1 6FS. Focuses on quality food and drink in comfortable surroundings.
Arrive 4-15pm
6 Walk down the hill and at the bottom of Castle Road you will find perhaps the most famous pub inNottingham: 'Ye Olde trip to Jerusalem'. Supposedly the oldest inn in England, there has been a pub on this site for the last 800 years. The pub is built in to the sandstone caves beneathNottingham Castle. The pub is now owned by Greene King so the Hardy and Hanson's 'Trip to Jerusalem' ale served in the pub is actually brewed by Greene King in Suffolk and is a local beer in name only.
Arrive 5-15pm
7 The final stop is Castle Rock's brewery tap -- 'The Vat and Fiddle' at Queens Bridge Road, . NG2 1NB The pub is mere yards away from the brewery and is a couple of minutes walk away from the train station. There are usually 12 hand-pulled ales available.
