14. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Dr Vera Silva, aquatic mammal specialist at National Institute for Amazon Research (INPA) :
In other places of the world, Australia and New Zealand, there are well organised tours for feeding dolphins and even to swim with them. It's a common practice, since Ancient Greece, people were fascinated by dolphins. In the case of the Pink River Dolphin (Boto in Portuguese) some taboos have been broken, because of the fears and the legends. The legends still exist, but people are losing their fear and respect for animals.

17. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Raimundo Pereira, Fisherman:
It (the dolphin) flirts with the girls, transforms itself into a person and chases them, just like us, pursuing it's passion.
18. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Maria Guimaraes, Local woman :
Older people tell us that the dolphin enchants people (casts spells on) and that many have been enchanted by dolphins. Right here in Novo Airao, I heard once, it happened to a young woman. After she graduated, she came here to see the dolphins. later she went crazy and died. There was no cure. I think it was enchantment.
19. Marilda Medeiros, owner of the restaurant walking on beach
20. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Marilda Medeiros, owner of the restaurant :
When Marisa (her daughter) saw them for the first time, she came to me and said: 'Mother, I got a dolphin'. 'No way,' I said. 'It must be a big fish.' But she insisted, 'no, mother, it's a dolphin'. So I ran with her to take a look, and when I felt her enthusiasm, her great passion and enormous happiness, I immediately fell in love with the dolphins too.

You can buy a portion of fish for R$15,00 (~US$9,00) at the floating bar close to the pier and feed these exotic mammals. In the past people were allowed to swin with them but this has been forbiden. Anyhow, to feed them and to be able to touch them is still an amazing experience. Altough this small group lives free in the river, they are so used to get food from the tourists since they were born that they are not able to hunt for themselves anymore.
