Talking Jazz 3: Government Funding for Jazz
This online panel discussion is NOT a how-to for would-be funding recipients, rather it is a close look at the state of government arts funding for jazz in the U.S. today-- a subject that potentially affects all of us as creators, presenters, journalists and lovers of jazz. Our panel of experts will unfold the links between federal government support for the arts, especially jazz, and local efforts at the state and city level.
Panelists:
Cedric Hendricks attorney, former staff member for Congressman John Conyers who has worked closely with Congressman Conyers on jazz-related legislative and policy initiatives. These include House Concurrent Resolution 57, which, in 1987 designated jazz as a rare and valuable national American treasure. Most recently, Mr. Hendricks assisted Congressman Conyers with the development and August 2011 introduction of HR 2823, the National Jazz Preservation and Education Act. This bill is currently being revised for reintroduction during the current 113th Congress.
Michael Faison, is the executive director of the Idaho Commission on the Arts, the Idaho state agency charged by law to stimulate and encourage the study and preservation of the arts and public interest and participation in the arts in the state. Previously, Mr. Faison designed infotainment media in jazz education for MCG Jazz, the jazz presenting and education program of Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has a deep love of jazz as the unique American musical language.
Jennifer Johnson Washington, Program Director -- Special Events, Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events of the City of Chicago. For more than two decades, she has served as the event coordinator for the internationally acclaimed Chicago Jazz Festival, the longest running of the city's lakefront music festivals and a Labor Day weekend tradition.
