Greyhounds racing, Belle Vue Greyhound Stadium, Manchester, England, United Kingdom
Belle Vue Stadium is a greyhound racing track in Belle Vue, Manchester, where the very first race around an oval track in Britain was held on 24 July 1926. It is also used for speedway as the home ground of Elite League team Belle Vue Aces since 1988 and since 1999 has British Stock Car Association (BriSCA), the British governing body for stock car racing and banger racing. The stadium holds a number of BriSCA events and has become one of the most popular venues in the North-West of England. The track has always been the property of Greyhound Racing Association Ltd. (GRA), which has invested heavily in it right through to the current day. The stadium offers luxury glass-fronted grandstands, restaurant, hospitality boxes, and several bars. Greyhound racing takes place on Friday and Saturday evenings. In 1925 Charles A. Munn, an American businessman, made a deal with Smith and Sawyer for the rights to promote the greyhound racing in Britain. Although the earlier attempt to introduce mechanical racing at Hendon had almost been forgotten, the pastime of coursing was as strong as ever in Britain. Fortunately for Munn, the first person he contacted with regards to reintroducing greyhound racing into Britain was Major L. Lyne Dixson. The Major was a leading figure in British field sports and was quickly won over to the idea presented to him by the American entrepreneur. Finding other supporters proved to rather difficult however. With the General Strike of 1926 looming, the two men scoured the country in an attempt to find others who would join them. Eventually they met Brigadier-General Alfred Critchley, who in turn introduced them to Sir William Gentle JP. Between them they raised £22,000 and formed the Greyhound Racing Association Ltd. When deciding where to situate their new stadium, Manchester was considered to be the ideal place because of its sporting and gambling links. Close to the city centre, the consortium erected the first custom-built greyhound stadium and called it Belle Vue, where the very first race around an oval track in Britain was held on 24 July 1926. More than 1,700 people were attracted to the meeting where they watched a greyhound called Mistley win over 440 yards (402 m). By June 1927, the stadium was attracting almost 70,000 visitors a week. Six races with seven dogs in each race were held in the first meeting. Fifty years later a stand was named after Mistley, the winner of the first race. Running the quarter-mile flat course in 25 seconds, Mistley romped home eight lengths clear at 6–1. Belle Vue increased the number of runners per race to seven, but after the formation of the NGRC in 1928 the maximum number of dogs per race was limited to six. Since 2007 protests have been held against greyhound racing at Belle Vue. Greyhound Action, an animal rights organisation which campaigned for an end to greyhound racing, held weekly protests outside the races each Saturday and occasionally on Fridays. In 2010 The Belle Vue Greyhound Action Group also organized and held a series of demonstrations to protest at the entertainer Dara O'Briain's participation in greyhound racing. Campaigners at Belle Vue got an article published in the Irish press about O'Briain's greyhound, Snip Nua, which it is believed was the first ever in the Irish press to state that racing greyhounds are killed for economic reasons. In 2008 the Sunday Times revealed that Belle Vue dogs were being sent for research at Liverpool vets school by trainer Richard Fielding. Further instances of injury were highlighted in 2014, when a trial session was halted after several dogs sustained serious injuries and one death. In 2010 concerns were raised about the high injury rates at Belle Vue. Since Greyhound Action disbanded in 2011, the protests have been held by a protest group who call themselves Shut down Belle Vue. A 2012 article in the Sunday Express also called the kennels of two Belle Vue trainers, Beverly Heaton and Nigel Saunders, disgusting. The article alleged that dogs were kept in cramped dilapidated kennels without heating and in some cases doors and that faeces and urine had not been adequately removed. A greyhound protection group, Greytexploitations, provided video footage to substantiate allegations of the poor conditions, these included the image of a Greyhound skull on a dog waste heap. In January 2014 Caged North West held a protest demo at Manchester's Deansgate Hilton hotel against the Greyhound Board of Great Britain's awards night. Around 400 protesters attended the demo but despite this the event failed to be mentioned by the media. CAGED NW publicized the event. In July 2014 CAGED NW and other greyhound protection groups held a remembrance event in Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens, held on the 88th anniversary of the opening of Belle Vue. The event featured a service by a church minister and a fly past by a light aircraft carrying a banner displaying the words YOU BET THEY DIE.

GREYHOUNDS:
The Greyhound is a breed of sighthound that has been primarily bred for coursing game and racing, which has also recently seen a resurgence in its popularity as a pedigree show dog and family pet.
Greyhounds as Pets:
Greyhound owners and adoption groups consider Greyhounds to be wonderful pets. Greyhounds are quiet, gentle, and loyal to owners. They are very loving creatures, and they enjoy the company of their humans and other dogs. Whether a Greyhound enjoys the company of other small animals or cats depends on the individual dog's personality. Greyhounds will typically chase small animals; those lacking a high 'prey drive' will be able to coexist happily with toy dog breeds and/or cats. Many owners describe their Greyhounds (a retired racing dog) as 45 mile per hour couch potatoes.
Greyhounds live most happily as pets in quiet environments. They do well in families with children as long as the children are taught to treat the dog properly and with politeness and appropriate respect. Greyhounds have a sensitive nature, and gentle commands work best as training methods. They are pack-oriented dogs, which means that they will quickly adopt humans into their pack as alpha. Greyhounds occasionally develop separation anxiety when re-housed or when their owners have to leave them alone for a period of time. The addition of a second Greyhound often solves this problem.
A very common misconception regarding Greyhounds is that they are hyperactive. In retired racing Greyhounds, this is usually not the case.[14] Greyhounds can live comfortably as apartment dogs, as they do not require much space and sleep close to 18 hours per day. In fact, due to their calm temperament, Greyhounds can make better apartment dogs than smaller, more active breeds.
This is due to their prey-drive, their speed, and the assertion that Greyhounds have no road sense. However, a good run at least once a week is important, especially for younger greyhounds, and suitable areas can usually be found. Due to their size and strength, adoption groups recommend that fences be between 4 and 6 feet, to prevent them from jumping out. Two online databases are available to search for all past and present registered purebred Greyhounds: Greyhound-Data.com and Rosnet2000.com Dogs can be searched by their Bertillon number, race name, or other attributes. Data includes photos, race statistics, and pedigree.

Romford Greyhound Stadium
I went and saw my first greyhound race at the Coral Greyhound Stadium in Romford, UK.
Unfortunately I only got one chance of recording a race before the cameraman in the box above banged on his window and shouted out that I can't record because I'm stealing his copyright. I didn't even bother arguing over the point of what 'copyright' actually is.
I went to the Lobby and asked the staff if it's true that I can't record and if it's an official rule of the stadium. I wasn't given a clear answer on whether it's an official rule but was told that I'd need to get the cameraman to agree to let me record because he sells recordings of the days races.
I was told that he does allow the odd picture to be taken.
I'm just shooting some footage to share with friends and on Youtube. How could my recordings ever compare with his vantage point, huge camera and steady tripod?
How much kickback does the stadium get on this guys DVD sales vs. the free advertising of letting people take pictures and videos to share on Social media?

For any copyright, please send me a message. Belle Vue's historic greyhound stadium is set to be demolished after plans for nearly 250 new homes on the site were approved by councillors. The future of the stadium, previously home to speedway team Belle Vue Aces and which still hosts greyhound and stock car racing, has been the subject of a bitter battle for over a year. Plans to close the track on Kirkmanshulme Lane, which dates back to 1926, and which is the last of its kind in the north west, and replace it with 167 two, three and four-bedroom houses and 80 one and two bed apartments were first announced last year. Since then fans of both greyhound and stock car racing have been campaigning to save it whilst animal welfare campaigners have swung their weight behind the housing plan. An advertising van with displays denouncing dog racing was seen circling the area close to the town hall before the meeting got underway. However, animal welfare considerations played no part in the decision, planning officials confirmed during the meeting, saying it was determined on planning grounds alone. The plans include a mix of homes and apartments for private sale and private rent. 35 affordable homes, 14 percent of the the total, will also be delivered by housing group Great Places. The scheme had been recommended for approval by officers as they had concluded the loss of the facility is outweighed by the provision of a good quality residential development that provides a wide range of new accommodation for the residents of Manchester. That view was shared by councillors on the 15 person planning committee who gave the plans the green light. Councillor Gavin White said: Whilst it is sad to lose a historic sporting venue, we do have a major housing crisis in the city and welcome the affordable housing provision within the scheme. Coun Jon Connor-Lyons said: I've always argued for mixed housing schemes, I think they are really important. I wish this scheme did have more than 14 percent affordable housing but this is significantly more than elsewhere in the city. Responses in favour had been received from all over the world during the public consultation. And there were cheers and applause from the public gallery in the town hall chamber as the plans were unanimously approved. The site is owned by the Crown Oil pensions fund, whose leasing agreement with the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA's) is understood to have expired last year when the plans to replace the stadium with housing first emerged. The lease is now owned by the Arena Racing Company (ARC). Earlier Simon Walmsley, chairman of Friends of Belle Vue Stadium, a group who have been campaigning to save the facility, told the meeting: W
Belle Vue Zoo Park Manchester, 1976
Memories of the fondly remembered Belle Vue Zoological Gardens and Amusement Park in Manchester. This 16mm colour footage is mostly from the summer season 1976. The Zoo closed the following year, at the end of the summer season 1977. This was the beginning of the end for Belle Vue, and within four years virtually everything on the site had closed. Today the site is given over mainly to housing, and there are few clues to its glorious past.

A man runs naked at belle vue stadium in manchester
A man who stripped off and streaked around a greyhound track in a viral video has identified himself.
Tyrone Johnson has revealed - perhaps predictably - he was on his stag do when his pals dared him to get his kit off.
So the 34-year-old, hopped over the fence at the Belle Vue Stadium track, in Manchester, baring his bottom last Saturday.
In the footage, a member of security can be seen falling over after clambering over the fence to catch him.
Tyrone, from Dukinfield, Greater Manchester, then sprinted around the track and onlookers cheered him on.
