Mar del Plata Travel Guide - Argentina Unique Experience
Mar del Plata Travel Guide - Argentina Unique Experience
Mar del Plata is located about 400km south of Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the summer months, December through March, the beaches are crowded with Porteños on holiday. Outside the summer months, the city is much less crowded. However there are 700,000 residents who live there year round. It is a very large city with lots to do, and not only in summer months.
he name Mar del Plata has the meaning of sea of the Plate region or adjoining sea to the (River) Plate region. Mar del Plata features an oceanic climate typical for eastern Argentina. Winters are cool though and there is an average of about 6 days where temperatures reach 0°C (32°F) in the city center and 27 in the airport.
As part of the Argentine recreational coast, tourism is Mar del Plata's main economic activity with seven million tourists visiting the city in 2006. Mar del Plata has a sophisticated tourist infrastructure with numerous hotels, restaurants, casinos, theatres and other tourist attractions. Mar del Plata is also an important sports centre with a multi-purpose Olympic style stadium (first used for the 1978 World Cup and later upgraded for the 1995 Pan American Games), five golf courses and many other facilities.
Mar del Plata is served by Astor Piazzolla International Airport (MDQ/SAZM) with daily flights to Buenos Aires served by Aerolíneas Argentinas and Sol Líneas Aéreas and weekly flights to Patagonia served by LADE. Highway 2 connects Mar del Plata with Buenos Aires and Route 11 connects it through the coastline, ending at Miramar, 40 km (25 mi) south of Mar del Plata. Route 88 connects to Necochea and Route 226 to Balcarce, Tandil and Olavarría.
Mar del Plata is the most popular destination for conventions in Argentina after Buenos Aires. Mar del Plata has a wide range of services in this sector. The summer season hosts over fifty theatrical plays. Mar del Plata has a wide variety of clubs located by district: the area of Escollera Norte (known for its quantity of pubs and nightclubs) and Constitution Avenue.
Great fish. The Puerto of Mar del Plata is a nice zone to know and try mariscos, rabas and as many possibilities as you can. Alfajores (a cake sandwich with dulce de leche)are found all over Argentina, and go perfect with cafe con leche. Many say the best are at the Havanna shops that are all around MDP. They make great gifts to bring home.
Mar del Plata boasts over 500 hotels, the majority falling into the two and three star category. As usual, things get cheaper the further inland you go, but you can still get a reasonable rate two or three blocks from the beach. Alem street is the heart of nightlife in the city. You will find countless pubs, bars, nightclubs in about a 6 square block area. The discos are located north of town: for 30 pesos, Sobremonte is quite an experience. Chocolate and Gap also are a lot of fun on the right night.

Feria Masticar is a food festival that celebrates Argentine food and drink, and draws hungry foodies from far and wide - ourselves included. The festival is usually held in Buenos Aires, but this year they expanded to the coastal city of Mar del Plata and what better reason to visit!

1) Calamari chorizo with pickled vegetables
2) Pork sandwich with Japanese BBQ sauce and coleslaw
3) Obama pizza with pepperoni and cheese
4) Super sorrentos stuffed with ground lamb confit, sundried tomatoes and mushroom sauce
5) Sauvignon blanc by Costa y Pampa

And that was just our first day at the food fair! We came back the following day to try some other Argentine dishes, so stay tuned for that.

ARGENTINE FOOD FESTIVAL IN ARGENTINA: Feria Masticar in Mar del Plata!:
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a travel vlogging couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
We had the privilege of traveling around Argentina for nearly 3 months from January- April 2019 on a trip covering a large section of the country.
We kicked things off with several days in Buenos Aires where we were joined by Audrey's parents eating and sightseeing around some of our favourite neighbourhoods in the city. We then flew from Buenos Aires to Cordoba where we spent a couple of weeks in the Sierras of Cordoba visiting both La Cumbrecita and Villa General Belgrano with highlights including hiking and delicious German and Swiss cuisine.
From Cordoba, we then travelled a considerable distance on an overnight bus to Mar Del Plata just in time for a special food festival called Feria Masticar featuring the best of Argentine food and wine. We spent several days enjoying beaches and seafood before heading south to Patagonia to visit the province of Chubut.
While on the Atlantic side of Chubut we visited Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, Trelew, Gaiman and Dolavon. To summarize our time in this area, we had incredibly close encounters with wildlife including penguins, sea lions and guanacos while also experiencing Welsh culture in Argentina.
Our time in Patagonia continued as we headed from east to west trading more barren landscapes for thick forests, impressive mountains and magnificent lakes. We spent significant time in both Esquel and El Bolson with day trips to visit Trevelin, Parque Nacional Los Alerces, Cholila and Lago Puelo. Highlights included sailing, hiking, riding vintage trains and partaking in the national asado festival.
We finished visiting Patagonia with time spent in Villa La Angostura, San Martin De Los Andes and Bariloche where we enjoyed more stunning scenery and hiking. On our way back to Buenos Aires, we took the Tren Patagonia to Las Grutas before meeting up with Audrey's dad again.
To finish off our trip in Argentina, we spent more time in the capital and later Mendoza where we got to experience wine tourism to its fullest extent. Overall, we had an amazing time travelling around Argentina having only scratched the surface of this vast and diverse country.
Overall our Argentina travel series explores cities, small towns that are off-the-beaten-path, and scenic attractions with a strong emphasis on Argentina cuisine and local culture.

Eating an ARGENTINIAN PICADA + CHURROS at Manolo in Mar del Plata, Argentina
In today's video we take you to Manolo, a restaurant chain that's a favourite with locals here in Mar del Plata. Manolo is best known for its stuffed churros - strips of fried dough filled with dulce de leche, vanilla, or chocolate - and they are delicious! However, before we get into the desserts, we're going to introduce you to the Argentinean picada, a meal that's often considered a snack or an appetizer. A picada consists of lots of little dishes with finger food - similar to tapas in Spain. We ordered the classic picada at Manolo, which featured fried cheese, calamari, fries, marinara pizza, margarita pizza, mini sausages, beef empanadas, chicken empanadas, olives, stir-fry, and 1 litre of beer! It was a lot of food and even though the menu said this particular picada is meant for 3, I could see it feeding a few more friends. This is definitely a meal to try if you're going to be travelling in Argentina. Oh, and even though we were beyond stuffed, we still made room to try the 3 different churros, because hey, that's what you do at Manolo!
