Man attacked by Shamba the lion survived | Recovering in hopsital
[VIDEO NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS] Man mauled by Shamba the lion in Thabazimbi.
In the video, the man who is said to be the owner of the game farm, is seen walking behind the lion.
A few seconds later, the lion chases him, attacks him and drags him into the bushes. The incident apparently took place at the Marakele Predator Centre in Thabazimbi.
According to police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the incident occurred on Monday, 30 April.
The owner was immediately taken to hospital with serious injuries. He is currently recuperating in hospital, he said.

A wildlife park owner was savagely mauled by a lion(Shamba) in front of screaming onlookers after he entered the animal's enclosure.
Mike Hodge, a 67-year-old British expat, was rushed to hospital with injuries to the neck and jaw following the shocking incident caught on film in South Africa.
Pictures shows Mr Hodge smiling in his hospital bed despite his injuries, with a friend telling us that he is recovering from the dramatic ordeal.
The video of the attack, filmed at the Marakele Predator Park in South Africa, shows Mr Hodge entering the lion's enclosure.

The owner of the Marakele Animal Sanctuary‚ who was attacked by his lion Shamba in Thabazimbi on Saturday‚ is recovering in hospital‚ his family said.
Shamba‚ 10‚ had been handraised as a cub by the family.
The family said that on Saturday morning at around 11:20am‚ Michael Hodge‚ 72‚ was doing what he loves most – sharing his love for predators with visitors to his private sanctuary just outside Thabazimbi in Limpopo.
The family said one of the highlights for tourists was a trip into the lion enclosure.
Hodge alighted from the safari vehicle to open the gate to exit after he had shown visitors around.
The family said as a precaution‚ a staff member routinely ensured that Shamba was distracted and removed from the gate area. “This can clearly be seen in the video as the staff member walks away from the tourists along the perimeter fence.
“Unexpectedly and unfortunately‚ the male lion returned and beared down on Mike who retreated – running towards the vehicle‚” the family said in a statement.
The lion dragged Hodge from the vehicle and the lion was fatally injured in the ensuing attempt to save Hodge.
Hodge’s wife and partner in the project Chrissy was in town during the incident and daughter Emma was at the main gate.
“Mike was rushed to the local hospital and stabilised before being airlifted to a Johannesburg hospital. He has a broken jaw and several lacerations‚ but is recovering well‚” Chrissy said. She said her husband’s recovery process would be long and arduous.
She said this had been a double tragedy for the family. “The entire family is devastated by the loss of Shamba‚” Chrissy said.
The family moved to South Africa from the UK 30 years ago and opened the sanctuary to the public in 2010.
The family have asked for privacy during this traumatic time.
Marakele fires
A massive series of fires swept through the greater Marakele National Park and Thabazimbi area, South Africa, for the past four days (16-19 September 2017). Our bush camp, Griffons Bush Camp, was directly in its path as it the fire poured down the mountain during the night.
We were concerned about fatalities to the endangered Cape Griffon Vultures which have a breeding colony on the cliffs above our property, but assessment by Kerri Wolter and her team at Vulpro saw that the vultures, which flew and rested on trees during the fire, were largely undisturbed, and settled back on the cliffs after the fire had passed .
Thanks to the amazing help of our Camp Manager, Alois Chingumbe, who backburned the fire from the camp, with a little help from my partner Thelma Roos and myself, all was saved. The helicopter and fire services were mostly successful further down the valley, helping put out the fire. Soon the new grass will grow, and the wildlife will find fresh spring food. 4K stock of the fire is available from Wild Dog Productions.

Marakele National Park - Part 4 of 4
Marakele National Park in just beyond Thabazimbi in the Limpopo province, South Africa.
** Warning : Most of the video consists out of driving scenes. (Tar, gravel and off road / 4x4) **
What makes this National Park so special is that the Bontle camp ground is unfenced!
We have had ostriches, antelope, warthog and rhino come to visit our campsite on almost all of the visits to Marakele over the years
Truly spectacular
This video is to demonstrate the various roads within Marakele.
Most gravel roads are in such a condition that a normal sedan can traverse it without any issues.
There is a section – clearly marked as 4x4 only – that consists out of soft sand.
In the adjacent section of Marakele you can travel to the Towers on top of the mountain via two roads:
Tarmac – Although becoming single and great care must be taken when coming around a bend, oncoming has to be negotiated on a single track with a sheer cliff on one side and a sheer drop off on the other.
Off road track – This starts off as a gravel track in a loop, starting and ending on the same tar road leading towards the towers. In the North East corner of the gravel track loop, a single lane off road track leads towards the old farmhouse location, and back.
Remember this is wild animal and Big 5 country!

Marakele National Park, South Africa - 4x4 Trail
Driving the 4x4 trail in the South African Marakele National park, late August 2012.
While the trail is not really challenging, a 4x4 with a gear reduction and a good ground clearance appears to be necessary, as some sections require to crawl at a low speed and are rugged / washed out.
There is nothing particular to see at the end of it, but the beautiful landscape makes it worthwhile to drive.
