Marina Vallarta is like a resort within a resort with an exclusive Marina filled with yachts, boats, and charters, a championship 18-hole golf course designed by Joe Finger. Located just 15 minutes from downtown Puerto Vallarta and a few minutes away from the Puerto Vallarta International Airport, Lic. Gustavo Diaz Ordaz.

The Marina area is more exclusive and a bit more expensive than other areas in Puerto Vallarta. It was built during the golden years of the city in the 1980's, specifically in 1986, by the Güitrón brothers Jorge and José Martínez Güitrón, they took a leap of faith and planned big.
A sudden growth in tourism inspired the Güitrón Martinez brothers to start an important and visionary residential and business development, the one we now know as the Marina Vallarta, where you would be able to shop by the Marina and enjoy luxury hotels, condos, housing developments, private schools and top-level maritime amenities that could even welcome luxury yachts in what was at the time the largest marina in Mexico with 500 slips.
They also had excellent marketing sense and convinced the famous actress Elizabeth Taylor, that already owned property in the city and lived many years here, to buy one of the first available condos by the Marina, that helped give it all some extra appeal, for sure.
The Marina boardwalk offers lots of good shops, a great range from inexpensive restaurants to fancy elegant dining options, delis, a Starbucks, spas, cafés, bakeries, and ice-cream stores too, even a little supermarket.

Hey there! We are Greg and Hillary – a husband and wife team that loves traveling, going on adventures, and helping others do the same! Although we love traveling, at this point in time, we still have full time 9-5 jobs in Dallas, Texas.
In August of 2016, we packed up our things, Greg quit his job, and we moved to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!
Hillary is working remotely for her CPA firm and Greg is working on this site full time.
We view ourselves as fairly ordinary people, complete with an ordinary income, ordinary jobs, and (unfortunately) an ordinary amount of student loan debt (thanks UNT!).
I know what you are thinking, “Aren’t travel blogs supposed to be written by hippies that don’t have jobs and live in hostels?!” Well don’t you worry, we are working on making that happen! Although we hope to become full time travelers in the next 1-2 years, this site is not necessarily aimed at people that want to travel full time.
Our hope is not that you quit your job and become a long haired, bearded, Volkswagen van driving hippy. Instead, our hope is that after reading our stories you are more inspired to live a more fulfilling life from 5pm-9am!
Why such the emphasis on how ordinary we are? Although we love reading travel blogs, it is easy to feel disconnected from the writers at times. It seems as though they are leading such extraordinary lives that they are somehow doing something that is unreachable to the “average” person.
We are here to prove that wrong. We are here to tell you that even if you work a full-time job and only get two weeks of vacation each year-you still have the power to design an adventurous life for yourself. Afterall, that is exactly where we started before leaving it all behind to live la vida loca!
After having several caffeine induced conversations about how people should travel more and shift their priorities in a way that will lead to a more fulfilling life, we decided to share our stories with you.
Our purpose in creating Kinetic Kennons is to share our stories of travels, adventures, and funny mishaps and to inspire others to design a life full of exploration. Throughout this site you will find posts about how to go on a cheap weekend trip, funny stories such as the time Hillary forgot to update her passport before an international trip, and inspirational rants on why you should lead a more adventurous life!

Yesterday we headed over to Marina Vallarta to explore the area and try a new place to eat. If you're curious as to what the Marina area looks like, just check out our video:
So which is better?
So which one is better? That's a really tough comparison. As usual with our comparison videos, we don't believe either one is better overall, they are just different. However, they each have their own unique atmosphere that may suit you better depending on what you're looking for.
If you are coming to Mexico for the first time, or if you just want to really get a feel for what Puerto Vallarta and Mexican culture is like, we suggest Old Town.
If you aren't a big beach person and you don't necessarily care to be in a downtown area, or just don't want to be in the middle of all of the action, Marina Vallarta may be a better fit. Marina Vallarta is a little more expensive in terms of shopping and eating out, but I would imagine that to be the case in marinas across the globe.
In our opinion (we are wrong sometimes), Old Town feels a lot more lively and active and Marina Vallarta, though it has plenty of bars and restaurants, feels like it is suited to a much quieter crowd.
Now that we have spent plenty of time in Puerto Vallarta we can appreciate going to Marina Vallarta and getting a feel for what it is like. I could easily see us living in an area like when we are older and if we had a car that allowed us to more easily get around the city (I know, I know, the buses and taxis run there too).
Hopefully this gave you a little insight into which area of Puerto Vallarta may be better for you. There is no one part that is the BEST, it just #really depends on what you are looking for.

Where Did We Eat
Ah, you just wanted to know where we ate. I don't blame you!
We had dinner at La Terraza Di Roma. The food was excellent, the service was exceptional, and the views were impeccable.
Greg ordered the lasagna and Hillary ordered the four cheese pasta. We would both recommend ordering those dishes again. However, the pizza smelled SO good that we might consider ordering a pizza next time just based on those smells!
The dinner cost 330 pesos before tip.
For dessert we went to La Federal Vallarta. We highly suggest ordering the Flaming Crepes (I don't think that's the actual name, but there is only one crepe dish on the dessert menu so you can't miss it). We have had a lot of crepes, but that one may have been one of the best we have ever had.
Two desserts cost us just under 200 pesos. Well worth it.
If you are in the Marina area and you want to grab dessert, sip on a nice drink, catch a soccer game, or all three, we highly recommend visiting La Federal Vallarta!

A magnificent way to arrive in Puerto Vallarta is by sea. Several cruise lines make Puerto Vallarta a Port O' Call, docking at the Terminal Maritimo (Harbor Terminal) in the Marina Area, which has had to be modified to receive more than one cruise ship at a time.
Puerto Vallarta harbor is exclusively for nautical tourism, and has three docking positions for vessels up to 311 meters (964 ft) long (actually 2 for ships up to 311 meters long and 1 for 294 meters). It provides many services for both ships and passengers, including tour operators, tour guides, taxi cabs, money exchange, ATM, Wi-Fi, coffee shops, restaurants, shops and souvenir stores. During 2016 the harbor received 333,700 passengers, an increase of 6% compared to the year before.
The PV Cruise Port offers various tourist services that include, taxis, rental cars, currency exchange options, a handicraft market, a few eating options, phones, a cybercafé, plus ticket sale for day cruise options that take you on great tours around the Bay, all in a secure and efficient environment.

This will help you to determine which área is best for your accoding to your lifestyle. We will go over types of accomodations, activites and Budget to utimately discover which are is best for you.
Here are the top Pros/Cons
Romantic Zone offers the largest variety of restaurants in the entire bay with prices that vary in all ranges.
Yes Basilio Badillo and Olas Altas Restaurants tend to catter to more sophisticated palettes while small famiy owned restaurants on Fco. I Madero and Lazaro Cardenas offer great food at much more affordable prices.
If you stay in Marina Vallarta. There’s not really anything in walking distance to do/see/eat that you couldn’t find back in the US or CANADA. If you decide that you want to come to the Romantic Zone It will take you an average of 15-20 minutes depending on traffic by taxi and Double that for the bus.
There are several new buildings going up in Romantic Zone and much more night life so expect noise from bars and construction.
Marina Vallarta is perfect for people who want the alll inclusive and/or resort experience, newer and larger facilites. Larger condos and less expensive than the Romantic Zone.
The Romantic Zone is more for people who really like to walk around and explore. You can wander into Downtown and 5 de diciembre which are more authentic Mexican neighborhoods
Ultimately: It all comes down to what type of experiences are you looking to get from you stay in Puerto Vallarta?

In this video I take a one hour and twenty minutes walk from my hotel The City Express in Marina Vallarta, all the way to the Malecon, eventually arriving at the Playa de Los Muertos Pier. The hotel zone is located between downtown Puerto Vallarta and Marina Vallarta.
The beaches have clear sands and pristine emerald waters and calm waves. There are several breakwaters that help create stable sandy beaches and they are used for events and weddings.
