FAITH47 - 'A STUDY OF WARWICK TRIANGLE AT RUSH HOUR' - 2014
In July 2014 Faith47 completed the painting of six huge walls, on four of the supporting columns of the N3 viaduct adjacent to the Early Morning Market in Warwick.
An ambitious project in the heart of Durban, South Africa. It is one of the Fringe Projects that formed part of the 25th World Congress on Architecture, UIA2014.
Faith was originally introduced to the area by Doung Jahangeer, a Durban artist architect and co-founder of dalacreative.
Referring to Warwick triangle she says, “I’m specifically interested in exploring this notion of the informal economy.
I was struck by the potent energy of this area. The paintings are portraits of some of the traders in the area, a tribute to the everyday man on the street”
Art in public spaces create a visual gap to breathe, nothing is being sold or advertised. There is only a communication from the artist to the passer-by, allowing the viewer to find his or her own meaning within the works. This kind of intervention is necessary as so much of our public space and city architecture is alienating to the individual.
The video was produced by Shelly Nell.

Durban's Victoria Street Market & Zulu Medicine Market
At the Victoria Street Market, shop for African inspired accessories, clothing, souvenirs, home decorations, paintings and luggage etc. I was mostly fascinated with the spices stalls. Next to the Victoria Street Market is the Zulu Medicine Market where you can have an informative tour of “Inyanga (Doctors) lane”. The Zulu Medicine Market is a unique place where Zulu culture has survived in the modern urban environment.

A stall outside Durban's muti market - the Zulu pharmacy
Locals go to the Muti Market in Durban to buy medicine and magic for them and their house. The market which is behind Victoria Market deals in Zulu traditional medicinea made from fresh herbs and plants, bark, and animal and marinelife parts. Some parallels can be draw between Muti and TCM and Vietnamese traditional medicine as herbs and animal parts are used in combinations. The animal parts sold at the Muti Market however are more crudely prepared than animal parts sold in medicine streets in Vietnam. The bones and remains of animals here still have meat on them and are foul smelling. This dealer talks about a bucket of black paste that wards off evil. While I was there a woman came and bought some of this paste mixed with three types of dung, different bark and wood chips, minerals and car engine oil to keep the devil from her house. She paid 150 rand. The stall proprietor said the bucket of black paste can also make a person strong if it is put into his blood. You can make a cut in your arm and rub it in and then nobody can kill you he said. For more stories go to
