Marks & Spencer announces it is to close 100 stores by 2022
M&S has revealed that it will close 100 stores in the next four years. The closures will affect its clothing and home stores, which have under performed for several years, but bosses say the move is 'vital' for its survival. They will concentrate on expanding its online operation in the hope it will bring in a third of all sales by 2022 as well as his lucrative food halls. M&S today named 14 stores earmarked for closure on Tuesday, with 21 already having shut and a further 65 are yet to be earmarked. In total it has 1,035 stores in the UK, 300 large one containing clothing, home and food, 696 food halls and 39 outlet centres. Today they said its Bayswater, Fleetwood Outlet and Newton Abbot Outlet will close by the end of July 2018 while Clacton and Holloway Road in London will both close by early 2019. Darlington, East Kilbride, Falkirk, Kettering, Newmarket, New Mersey Speke, Northampton, Stockton and Walsall are also proposed for closure and will now enter a period of consultation with all 626 affected employees. The move is part of a five-year turnaround plan spearheaded by chairman Archie Norman and chief executive Steve Rowe. They have been seeking to save costs through store closures and shutting distribution centres as part of a wide-ranging efficiency drive as the company's financial performance deteriorates. Sacha Berendji, retail and property director at M&S, said: 'We are making good progress with our plans to reshape our store estate to be more relevant to our customers and support our online growth plans. 'Closing stores isn't easy but it is vital for the future of M&S. Where we have closed stores, we are seeing an encouraging number of customers moving to nearby stores and enjoying shopping with us in a better environment, which is why we're continuing to transform our estate with pace.' The retail giant says it is 'accelerating' its strategy transformation strategy launched in November last year as it focuses more on food and online sales. M&S currently teeters on the brink of crashing out of the FTSE 100 and experts are preparing for the 134-year-old retailer to announce another drop in profits this week. Another disappointing set of results could see it forced out of the blue chip index which it has been part of since its formation in 1984.

So what's all this about then?
CRAFTIVIST COLLECTIVE CAMPAIGN FOR A LIVING WAGE AT MARKS AND SPENCERS:
Craftivist campaign launches June 2015 after survey shows 17 percent of British shoppers would shop more often at Marks & Spencers if it paid a Living Wage
The Craftivist Collective is joining forces with ShareAction’s AGM Army this summer to press UK retailers to pay a Living Wage. The campaigners are coordinating a series of “stitch-ins” at branches of Marks & Spencers across the UK, for crafters to sew hand-made messages onto M&S handkerchiefs, to be delivered to the board, celebrity endorsers, and major shareholders of the British retail giant at its annual general meeting at Wembley Stadium on July 7th.
An online poll shows 17 percent of British shoppers would shop more often at Marks & Spencers if it paid staff a Living Wage. (Source: Opinium survey, 12th-16th June 2015, based on 2002 online interviews across the UK).
Stitch-ins will take place across the UK including London, Brighton, Glasgow, Birmingham, Lincoln, Bath, Milton Keynes amongst others.
The idea of the “stitch-ins” is to show M&S that in addition to major shareholders with billions of pounds under management, its core customer base is also fully engaged and supportive on the issue of the Living Wage, and that they expect the company to show leadership on this basic fairness issue.
Each unique hand-stitched hanky encourages board directors of M&S to commit to paying the Living Wage of £9.15 in London and £7.85 across the UK to all staff. This is a part of ShareAction’s campaign in partnership with Citizens UK to achieve the Living Wage across the FTSE 100 through shareholder activism. Nearly a quarter of FTSE 100 companies have now accredited with the Living Wage Foundation, but no high street retailer has yet signed up.
Crafters will be giving M&S handkerchiefs with personalised positive messages stitched into them to all 14 board members of M&S, as well as to its largest shareholders, and to the 2014 celebrities who feature in the company’s ad campaign: Annie Lennox, Emma Thompson, Alex Wek, Rita Ora, Dowreen Lawrence, Lulu Kennedy, and Rachel Khoo.
They will also be handing out 250 special handkerchief craft kits with a Living Wage message printed on them to shareholders at the company’s Annual General Meeting, so that shareholders can stitch too, to encourage themselves to support the Living Wage. These kits include an ethical hanky, needle and thread, instructions, and a briefing note on investment risk.
M&S Chief Executive Marc Bolland is paid £2.1million a year. Last year, his company refused to consider a Living Wage at its Annual General Meeting. Later, at a meeting with campaigners, the company again refused to consider paying the Living Wage.
Sarah Corbett, founder of the Craftivist Collective, said: “Marks & Spencer is supposed to be a company with solid values threaded through all that they do, which include paying your workers fairly. We’re sending the board and shareholders these carefully hand-stitched handkerchiefs to encourage the company not to ‘blow’ their chance to support life-changing decisions.”
Catherine Howarth, Chief Executive of ShareAction says: “This craftivist initiative at the M&S AGM is nothing to 'sniff at'. Sarah and her amazing stitchers are devoting hours to creating gifts the M&S board we hope will treasure and remember forever. People adore M&S but they want to see the company step up and become a Living Wage employer. The many big shareholders backing this call know it makes business sense as well as being the right thing to do.”

I went for breakfast at Denny's uk Glasgow. I had a grand slam which included sausages, hash browns,toast and some buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup and bottomless coffee. During this video I show and discuss my experience. She the menu and give my honest opinion.

ITM Power: UK's first hydrogen materials handling trial with M&S.
Using the ITM Power HFuel platform to generate hydrogen, the six week trial involves M&S using several fuel cell vehicles as a direct substitute for part of the existing battery powered fleet. The vehicles were deployed at M&S's 1.1million sq. ft. Prologis Park Distribution Centre.
The trial forms part of the M&S Plan A initiative, and aims to deliver zero emission vehicles with superior performance and a fast refuel time. The trial is the first of its kind in the UK and demonstrates the cutting edge vision of M&S and ITM Power.
