Whakatane
This bronze statue at the mouth of the Whakatāne River commemorates the bravery of Wairaka and the daughter of Toroa, captain-navigator of the Mataatua canoe.
When the Mataatua canoe first arrived at Whakatāne about 600 years ago, the men left the women alone in the canoe while they went ashore. When the canoe started to drift back to sea, Wairaka (defying the sacred ruling that forbade women to handle a canoe) seized the paddle and brought the canoe back to shore shouting, ‘Kia Whakatane au i ahau’ – I will act the part of a man.' This cry is the origin of the town's name.

HUI MATAATUA MARAE Whakatane DOI FLAG Nga Puhi Visit
Jaymie Anna Marie Stewart and I attended this Hui started at 9 30 am to discuss He Whakaputanga Flag of He Whakaputanga 1835 Declaration of Independence Flag Sovereign Authority and its gate Keepers Nga Puhi Taumata Kaumatua and Rangatira visiting Hapu Elders Hehepa Epiha and Willie Peita and Bryce Smith. They were joined by my own Ngati Porou Hapu and with Geori Job and her Maniapoto Hapu and Tainui Hapu speaker Alfred Mitchell Maori Government Confederation. Willie Peita asked for me to speak for 5 minutes but told I couldn't so that was a bit of a blow but I had to leave after lunch for Omaio Hui on a new Orchard Farm Hui at 3pm The Hui here was extended because one presentation for the Mokopuna was long and informative cut short my having a chance to talk about raising this flag on the Waitangoi Treaty Grounds. Historically I always get the shove sideways and the opportunites `about this Flags real purpose is left out why nothing ever happens about it And the fact that the Queen his nothing to do with this Flag and its Private Contract Trading Bank of England Jurisdiction I only talk about MOAI EARTH LORE SPIRIT KING WILLIAM IV PRIVATE CONTRACT with the WHAKAMINENGA 8 TRIBES and MOAI KING WILLIAM IV MEMORIALS to the Land and TITLE DOCUMENTS Tha's it! You can only talk Commercial Contracts with this Admiralty Ship of the Sea Trading Military Protectorate Flag SEAL nothing else It will have only taken me 5 minutes flat to say it all BLUNTLY. Anyway I leave that conversation for 5am in the morning of 28 October 2016 Historic Occasion 182 years since the British Landed here settles on these lands at Kororareka (Russel) Bay of Islands I can have more than 5 minutes as being the Flag itself Jurisdiction and of Commercial t Private Contract applications and enforcement of King William IV Acts of Parliament alongside New Zealand Parliament for Economic Developments such as this farm venture in this country

Whakatane's Mātaatua Wharenui
Personal video on the visit to Whakatane's Mātaatua Wharenui within the period of Asia Pacific Symposium on Cultures-based Innovation, Whakatane, August 4th-9th, 2013.
A significant Māori cultural icon has come home after more than a century of foreign travels.
The restoration of the Mātaatua Wharenui / Māori meeting house to its original home at Whakatane, on the Bay of Plenty coast, signals a new era for the much-travelled house that was once dedicated to a British monarch. When the magnificent wharenui was completed in 1875, it was said to be fit for a queen and the local Ngāti Awa tribe offered their treasured house to Queen Victoria as her Whakatane home-away-from-home.
