8 THINGS TO DO: A DAY IN SHINJUKU TOKYO (Matcha Green Tea, Gyoza, Sushi & More!)
Today is our first full day in Tokyo and we are exploring Shinjuku!
We have made it to our 9th country of Japan before arriving in Australia for a year and are so excited! When planning Japan, we were intent on eating delicious food. We were not disappointed.
We spend the day trying food from Japanese convenience stores (Konbini), exploring the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (with some Matcha Green Tea), trying gyoza, taking in the views from the Tokyo Metropolitan Building, shopping at Yodobashi Camera and finally ending the night with sushi and ice cream.
It was a jam-packed and fun first day! :)

A5 Wagyu Ramen and Matcha Ramen at Mensho San Francisco Shinjuku - Americanized Ramen in Tokyo!
The creator of Mensho, Tomoharu Shono, is a famous dude in the ramen world. He opened half a dozen shops in Tokyo, one in San Francisco, and now another one in Shinjuku, the heart of Tokyo. For this relatively new store called Mensho San Francisco, Shono-san brought back the creations that he designed for the American taste in his store in San Francisco. An absolutely unique concept and the only one of its kind.
The unique Americanized ramen variants that we had were:
A5 Wagyu Ramen
The absolute star of this shop comes in a very rich shoyu broth. In the US shop, you will pay $39 for this awesome bowl which is topped with a large slab of intensely marbled A5 wagyu beef from Kagoshima. A5 is the highest grade of Japanese beef, so you are getting world class beef here. When served, the beef is still almost raw, but slowly cooks in the scalding hot shoyu broth. The noodles are fresh and prepared in the kitchen of the restaurant. An absolute delight!
The Matcha Ramen
Americans love creamy and rich ramen, at least according to everything I have read online and and experienced in the States. In addition to that, Matcha seems to be a trend that is not new, but definitely ongoing and long lasting, as it seems. So Shono-san combined the American love for rich ramen and the hype of Matcha and created an absolutely fantastic toripaitan matcha ramen bowl. The blend of creamy chicken soup and slightly bitter green tea works fabulously. It definitely reminds you of a non-sweet matcha latte from Starbucks that is enriched with salty and chicken flavor components.
You can find the creator of the store, Tomoharu Shono, on Twitter and Instagram:

Tokyo Ramen Top 5 Must Eat at Shinjuku | Japanese Food Guide
Tokyo Ramen Guide - Top 5 Shinjuku Ramen Shops that you must-try if you come to Tokyo Japan. This Japanese Food Guide will visit 5 unique Ramen Shops in Shinjuku Tokyo. The 5 Shinjuku ramen shops we visit are Mensho San Francisco, Hosenka, Misoya Hachiro Shoten, Oreno Sora and Manrai. Each Ramen Shop in Shinjuku has its special ramen, whether it be miso ramen, shoyu ramen, tonkutsu ramen... and one of these is a Michelin star Ramen Shop in Tokyo. Some may consider these shops the best ramen in tokyo shinjuku and some maybe even the best ramen in japan.
5. Michelin star restaurant, Mensho San Francisco was originally opened in SF by Japanese Chef Tomoharu Shono, and was later reverse-imported to Tokyo. It’s hidden away on the 7th floor of Myload (mirodo) which is directly connected to the south exit of JR Shinjuku station. The shop presents a stylish cafe like interior attracting a larger female audience when compared to most ramen shops.
So I threw down on their A5 Black-hair wagyu beef shoyu ramen. The beef on top is from Kagoshima, silky smooth and extremely tender. The soup was made from Beef Genkotsu and Bonito flakes, creating a strong yet light flavor.

Hosenka is the second ramen shop produced by the owners Hayashida Ramen, which is another popular ramen shop in Shinjuku.
Misoya Hachiro Shoten is under the famous Ramen shop group, Nantsuttei which is famously known for its creamy tonkotsu broth soup. So without missing any flavorful notes, Misoya Hachiro Shoten’s also implements a creamy tonkotsu broth but in the miso variety.
Oreno Sora is a well-known ramen shop in Takadanobaba and this is their second shop. As for their menu, you can choose from 3 types - Kake buta soba, Tsuke buta soba, and Ae buta soba. This is Kake buta soba, literally translated to poured pork noodle, which is their regular standard ramen.
Manrai has been in business since 1961. I love the chic interior, reminds me of nice soba shop. It looks new but that’s because they moved location a few years back.

JAPAN DAY 1 ASAKUSA / SHINJUKU | #maybelinjapan
JAPAN DAY 1 #maybelinjapan
We took an overnight flight to Japan and arrived at 8am at Tokyo Narita Airport. With a full day ahead, we made full use of our time and headed out to explore Japan! For more information (names of restaurants, prices, etc), click to expand the description.
We took the Narita Express train to get from Narita Airport to Shinjuku (¥3,190 each). The train was very spacious and comfortable. The luggage storage area also came with locks, which we used so that we could have take a nap on the train, without having to worry about our luggage getting stolen – very useful!
Website:
After putting our bags down at our accommodation in Shinjuku, we travelled to the Asakusa area to spend our first day in Tokyo. After much deliberation, we had chosen our first proper meal as sukiyaki, and we had read many reviews about Asakusa Imahan. This place is known for sukiyaki and shabu shabu, and prices for dinner are quite expensive. However, (like many other places in Japan), the place serves affordable set lunches. We ordered one sukiyaki gozen set (¥3,500) and one sukiyaki donburi (¥2,000). The food was well worth the money. The service was also impeccable. We would definitely highly recommend this place!
Website:
After re-fueling, we headed out for some sightseeing. We walked down Nakamise street along our way to Senso-ji temple. There were all sorts of interesting things and traditional japanese foods. However, as we were very full from our meal at Asakusa Imahan, we only had space to share one wasabi flavoured rice cracker (¥150).
We got to Senso-ji temple and admired the temple grounds. Even though it was raining the place was still bustling with tourists. There was even a stall serving free hot japanese green tea, which was a welcome comfort in the cold and rain.
We then walked to an ice-cream place called Suzukien which specializes in tea flavored ice cream. In particular, they were known for their matcha ice cream, which were labelled 1 - 7 in intensity. When we got to the entrance of the shop, we were so relieved to find that there was only a short queue at the front of the shop. However, to our dismay, as we walked up to join the queue, the shop attendant at the front of the shop stopped us, and gestured to a map in her hand, telling us that the place where the queue starts was actually a block away behind the shop. Disappointed but determined, we followed her directions (and many other people in front of us) to the queuing location. It turns out that there was actually a garage / warehouse space with chairs where another 20-30 people were sitting and waiting for their turn to enter the ice cream shop. Nonetheless, we were determined to try the ice cream, and waited about 20-30mins for our turn to purchase the ice cream (¥630 for double scoop). The wait was definitely worth it. The ice cream was smooth and flavorful, and the level 7 matcha ice cream was an experience - the matcha flavor was so intense. When we put the ice cream in our mouths, it literally pulled all the moisture out of our mouths! You must try it for yourself.
Website:
After the interesting ice cream experience, we travelled back to our accommodation at Shinjuku and stopped at Shinjuku station to buy some of the famous Bake cheese tart (¥216 each) for our breakfast the next day.
Website:
We then went home to rest our stuffed bellies and tired bodies (we hardly had any sleep on the red eye flight and had walked the entire day) before heading out for dinner at Fu-unji, which was famous for their dipping ramen, or Tsukemen. The place is highly popular and raved about in almost all food blogs that we had read, and we were so excited to try it. As it was a rainy day, the queue was shorter than expected and we only had to wait about 20-30 mins before we could eat. The Tsukemen tasted amazing! The noodles were thick and springy - the perfect texture, and the dipping broth (a combination of fish and chicken broth) was so flavorful and chocked full of umami. At ¥1,000 yen a bowl, the noodles are such good value for money! Highly recommend!
After the fantastic meal at fu-unji, we called it a day and headed home to rest, in preparation for the early morning to Tsukiji Fish Market the next day. Stay tuned to find out more about Day 2 of our trip!

TOP 5 Dessert Spots in Tokyo, Japan You Have To Check Out (Watch This Before You Go)
Here are my favourite 5 dessert shops in Tokyo, Japan that we visited on our recent trip. The Japanese love sweets and so it's worth it to try all the unique creations and fit it in between all the other restaurants that you'll be going to. Everything from the croquant chou, soufflé pancake, matcha soft serve, ice cream, and crepes were all so good.
The full guide is on the blog:
I don't know if it was just me but I found it hard to find good dessert recommendations in Tokyo. There's so much of a focus on restaurants that the desserts often get overshadowed. The other thing I noticed was that there was definitely a big affinity for European desserts. Thing is, we didn't come to Japan for European pastries and so we were on the hunt for something more Japanese. That's how I came to decide on these five places to eat dessert.
Here are all of the restaurants that are featured in this video:

2. Flipper’s (代官山店) - 2:28

Amazing RAMEN & the world's RICHEST MATCHA ICE CREAM, Tokyo, Japan
Subscribe for more food and travel videos:
Chasing a Plate is in Tokyo Japan! Today we hit the streets of Tokyo and visit Afuri a modern Tokyo ramen noodle restaurant which adds yuzu to their broth giving it a citrusy, light kick. We visit Afuri in Shinjuku but they have a few stores around Tokyo. Sheena tries the Yuzu Shoyu ramen and finds it light and delicious. Diners are also given the option of adding extra chicken oil to their bowl of ramen to give it a thicker mouthfeel. For a great Tokyo ramen experience Afuri is definitely worth a visit. And like all ramen stores, you order from a vending machine!
After our Tokyo ramen noodles we head to Nanaya and meet our friend Yuko. Nanaya boasts the world's richest matcha gelato. They have different grades of matcha ice cream, one through to seven. One being very sweet and seven, the richest being quite savoury and bitter. It's super delicious though! We're so glad we are able to try matcha ice cream in Japan!
After our visit to Nanaya we meet some fellow YouTubers, Always a Friday for a drink.
Such a fun day exploring Tokyo, Japan!

: eddys ice cream - pretty good, not overly sweet. overpriced, but worth it for an IG pic. my ice cream costed 1450yen.
: cat cafe mocha - 200yen for 10 mins per person. you do get a free drink, but it is kinda pricey. i found that the cats here were very very shy, they would only come to you if you had treats. we have been to other cat cafes where the cats aren’t as shy. i don’t blame the cats tho, this cafe is super popular, they must be overwhelmed.
: ace t-shirt is from uniglo.
: shinjuku garden is a 200yen entry fee.
: zauo - was a really fun experience, but its super pricey. we saw the pics from the osaka brand, and it looked much more bigger there, i would recommend going to the osaka branch instead!

: alfred tea room - tasty, but again over priced. like super over priced lolol
: we actually watched a movie as well! we saw “searching” amazing movie btw. but watching movies here is kinda so different! EVERYONE is sooooo silent and quiet while watching, the seats are much much smaller too!

Vegetarian (& Non-Veggie!) Curry at Coco Curry - Japan vlog
Trying vegetarian and chicken curry at Coco Curry in Tokyo! They have vegetarian Japanese curry at select branches of Coco Curry in Japan.
The one in the video is the Akihabara Showadori branch, and they also definitely have veggie curry at their Roppongi, Shinjuku Station West Exit, Tobu Asakusa, Shimokitazawa and Ikebukuro Sunshine City Alpa restaurants. About 1 in 10 of their branches serve it; the full list is available in Japanese.
Coco Curry is a good, cheap place to get a filling meal. It's actually pretty spicy - although you choose the spice level so you can choose mild if you prefer. You can customise your curry and add toppings and extras, to have it just how you like! They have branches all over Japan, and lots of them in Tokyo - look out for the yellow sign.
