Mauna Kea TMT Protest March in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (9-1-2019)
Aloha Ohana,
Mahalo nui loa for tuning in. On this day i went down to check out the walk that was going on down the street to show support. To my surprise there was no news coverage and hardly any cameras out recording. I dont feel like its my place to be in front of the camera in situations like this so I made this short film for you guys to document this history so the world can see. If no one records it, no one will know unfortunately. I do this with the purest intentions to bring awareness to this whole situation. Much love and aloha to you Hawaii and to the world. If you pay attention i had an upside down hawaiian flag in my video a few months before this protest even started ironically. - Cory Pak

Mauna Kea, Big Island, Hawaii 4K (UHD)
Recorded: May 2019
Thanks to Stefan and his wife for helping me reach the summit of Mauna Kea.
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is 4,207.3 m (13,803 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii. Most of the volcano is underwater, and when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world, measuring over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) in height.
Mauna Kea last erupted 6,000 to 4,000 years ago and is now considered dormant.
With its high elevation, dry environment, and stable airflow, Mauna Kea's summit is one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observation. Since the creation of an access road in 1964, thirteen telescopes funded by eleven countries have been constructed at the summit. The Mauna Kea Observatories are used for scientific research across the electromagnetic spectrum and comprise the largest such facility in the world.

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii - Downtown Kona (2018)
Kona is a moku or district on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi in the State of Hawaii. In the current system of administration of Hawaiʻi County, the moku of Kona is divided into North Kona District (Kona ‘Akau) and South Kona District (Kona Hema). The term Kona is sometimes used inaccurately to refer to its largest town, Kailua-Kona. Other towns in Kona include Kealakekua, Keauhou, Holualoa, Hōnaunau and Honalo.
In the Hawaiian language, kona means leeward or dry side of the island, as opposed to ko‘olau which means windward or the wet side of the island. In the times of Ancient Hawaiʻi, Kona was the name of the leeward district on each major island. In Hawai‘i, the Pacific anticyclone provides moist prevailing northeasterly winds to the Hawaiian islands, resulting in rain when the winds contact the windward landmass of the islands – the winds subsequently lose their moisture and travel on to the leeward (or kona) side of the island. When this pattern reverses, it can produce a Kona storm from the west. Kona has cognates with the same meaning in other Polynesian languages. In Tongan, the equivalent cognate would be tonga; for windward, the associated cognate would be tokelau.
Kona is the home of the world-famous Ironman World Championship Triathlon which is held each year in October in Kailua-Kona. The Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park marks the place where Captain James Cook was killed in 1779. Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park and Honokohau Settlement and Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park are in Kona.
The volcanic slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa in the Kona district provide an ideal microclimate for growing coffee. Kona coffee is considered one of the premium specialty coffees of the world.
In pop culture, the region served as the basis of the Beach Boys' song Kona Coast from their 1978 album M.I.U. Album.
Kona is the home of one of the main bases of the international Christian mission organization YWAM, and the University of the Nations, first founded here.

ISLAND OF INSPIRATION
The island of Hawaii is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined (hence, its nickname, “Big Island”), its sheer size is awe-inspiring. You can travel through all but four of the world’s different climate zones there, ranging from Wet Tropical to Polar Tundra. From the snow-capped heights of Maunakea; from the lush valleys of the Hamakua Coast to the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach, the island of Hawaii is an unrivaled expression of the power of nature. However you decide to experience the island, it is sure to leave you Inspired!
The sun-drenched Kohala Coast sees an annual average rainfall of only nine inches, so soak in the sun and relax on Mauna Lani’s two sandy beaches, explore the Puako Petroglyphs, indulge at local restaurants or recharge at the spa. You’ll discover cultural treasures on the Kohala Coast, too, such as the remarkable Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, the largest restored heiau in Hawaii.
Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection is a luxury resort on the Big Island of Hawaii which is approximately 23 miles north of the Kona International Airport. It’s a 25-minute leisurely drive to the resort. Our concierge can assist you with your ground transportation.
#Hawaii Island, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, spans 4,028 square miles and is the most southern spot in the United States. There is a rich history and culture on the island with plenty of adventure from the mountain tops to the deep blue sea.
Extensive fitness offerings are fun and approachable for all ages. Indoors and outdoor classes such as beach boot camp and stand-up paddleboard yoga are available to provide variety and challenge you.

I had my brother drive our almost 10 year old Toyota Corolla S economy car with 120,000 miles on the odometer up to the Mauna Kea Volcano Summit to check out the observatories and the telescopes.
There were warning signs at the visitor center (VIS) that warned about the need for 4WD (four wheel drive or all wheel drive) but we had no problems going up or coming down.
My brother drove very slow on the way up in L low gear. We stopped a few times to admire the view and let the transmission cool down just in case it was over heating.
Then on the way back down we stopped several times at the parking lots to check the temperature of the rotors and brake calipers to make sure they didn't overheat.
Before we left the visitor center, we talked to some guys who drove a 2014 Hyundai Elantra sedan rental economy car who said that it wasn't too rough and just to take it slow both ways.
We saw lots of Jeep Wrangler rentals and other 4WD / AWD rental cars going up and down which you really don't need if you are a sensible and cautious driver.
Although this was a very dry and warm day with no rain. If it was raining or snowing and there was mud on the gravel road, we would not have attempted this expedition.
Please, if you have any doubts, do not attempt to drive up this road.
The entire driving time of these video clips was about 90 minutes (1 hour and a half). I sped up the driving parts by 1,200%.
Big Island Hawaii. Part 34. Saddle Road Minute.
December 2009. Music by: François De Roubaix.
Route 200, known locally as Saddle Road, is a road that traverses the width of the Island of Hawaiʻi, from downtown Hilo to its junction with State Route 190 near Waimea. The road was considered one of the most dangerous paved roads in the state, with many one-lane bridges and areas of marginally maintained pavement, While sections of the road have been improved to modern standards, several sections remain dangerously substandard. The highway reaches a maximum height of 6,632 feet (2,021 m) and is subject to fog and low visibility. Many rental car companies used to prohibit use of their cars on Saddle Road, but most now permit use of the road. The highway experiences heavy use as it provides the shortest route from Hilo to Kailua-Kona and access to the slopes of Mauna Loa and the observatories atop Mauna Kea.
While planning for the defense of the Hawaiian Islands in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Army hastily built an access road in 1942 to service its Pohakūloa Training Area and Bradshaw Army Airfield in the Humuʻula Highlands of Parker Ranch. Since it was not intended as a civilian road, the construction method was simple: clear, grade, pave. Military vehicles of all types and treads traversed the Island for the next three years.
Following the end of World War II in 1945, the Army turned over jurisdiction of the road to the Territory of Hawaiʻi and it was designated state route 20. However, the territorial government had few funds to maintain the road, let alone upgrade it to civilian standards. The story was the same as the islands became the State of Hawaiʻi in 1959. Saddle Road was subsequently handed to the County of Hawaiʻi and for many years only minimal maintenance was performed, leading to generally poor conditions and the source of the road's notorious reputation.
In recent years there has been increased attention on the road, with efforts to rebuild and renovate the highway into a practical cross island route. This has culminated in the repaving of some sections and complete rebuilding of others. (wikipedia)

Driving to summit of Mauna Kea, tallest mountain in the world (Hawaii)
We ascend Mauna Kea in Hawaii which is the tallest mountain in the world. Standing at 4,205m above sea level. However, much of the mountain is under water; when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is 10.203m tall—much higher than Mount Everest.
It is possible to drive to the top of the mountain but you need to use a 4WD from above 2.800m where there is a Visitor's Centre. We drive from Kona, via Road 190 and then the infamous Saddle Road, a highway that crosses the island where many rental car companies used to prohibit use of their vehicles. We had to rent a Toyota 4WD for the occasion.

Big Island Hawaii. Part 5. Driving to Kailua-Kona.
December 2009. Music by Lyman.
Check out the Hawaiian style highway graffiti. White coral on black lava.
The Hawaiʻi Belt Road is a modern name for the Māmalahoa Highway and consists of Hawaiʻi State Highways 11, 19, and 190 that encircles the Island of Hawaiʻi. The southern section, between Hilo and Kailua-Kona is numbered as State Highway 11. The section between Hilo and Waimea is State Highway 19. Between Waimea and Kailua-Kona, the road is split in two: the original mauka route (now State Highway 190) and a makai route 19, completed in 1975, which serves as access to the Kona and Kohala Coast resorts. (In the Hawaiian language, mauka means towards the mountain and makai means towards the sea. These terms are commonly used in travel directions.)
Parts of the southern half of the Hawaiʻi Belt Road were known during the Territorial days as the Kaʻū Belt Road. The names Hawaiʻi Belt Road and Māmalahoa Highway refer to the road system that encircles the entire island; many sections are also referenced by local names. (wikipedia)

GOING TO THE HIGHEST POINT IN HAWAII - Mauna Kea, HI

Birds of The Island of Hawaii Mauna Kea
Birds of the Big Island of Hawaii captured live all in one morning on the slopes of Mauna Kea on our way to a Koa salvage operation. You'll see the Nene (Hawaiian goose our state bite), Pueo (Hawaiian owl), and the pheasant. It is probably a common ring-necked pheasant but I am no expert.
We saw at least 3 Pueo that morning and quite often sitting near the road just watching us.
Farmers Market Hawaii - Protect Mauna Kea
The State of Hawai‘i’s Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) is planning to issue the University of Hawai‘i (UH) new leases for another 65 years, that’s right, BLNR is planning to give Mauna Kea to UH for another 65 years. The new leases would end in the year 2078—how old will you be in 2078? The current BLNR lease is scheduled to end in the year 2033, but this date is not good enough for UH and the other national and international observatories because they want the power to continue to build newer and bigger telescopes.
Mauna Kea Conservation District Lands are watershed, historic, environmentally and culturally sensitive lands and therefore have special protective status under Hawai‘i law. In fact, any activity that will have adverse impacts on the natural, historic and cultural resources of Mauna Kea are NOT permitted by law and BLNR is tasked with enforcing these laws. The University has already admitted that 45 years of astronomy development has resulted in adverse, significant, and substantial impacts to the natural and cultural resources of Mauna Kea. The BLNR needs to stop the University from further telescope develop on Mauna Kea!
In 1998, the State Auditor, found that BLNR and UH’s oversight and protections of the natural and cultural resources of Mauna Kea is inadequate to ensure the protection of natural resources. The University focused primarily on the development of Mauna Kea and tied the benefits gained to its research program. The University neglected historic preservation laws and the cultural value of Mauna Kea was largely unrecognized.
BLNR is the land manager for all conservation district lands and they are required to collect fair market lease rents for the use of the Mauna Kea’s public lands. Currently, national and international observatories are only required to pay $1.00 per year to lease Mauna Kea’s public and ceded lands. This is unreasonable and it violates the law.
Lastly, BLNR is not fulfilling its constitutionally mandated duty to protect all rights customarily and traditionally exercised for subsistence, cultural and religious purposes. Let your voice be heard –enough is enough!
Big Island (Hawai'i Island), Hawaii 4K (UHD)
Recorded: May 2019
This is one of the three Hawaiian islands that I decided to visit. I spent three days there, drove 345 miles by car and visited, incl. the places described below.
I think that three days on such a large island is a bit too little. The distances between the points to travel are longer than on other Hawaiian islands.
Big Island, or Hawaiʻi Island is the largest and the southeasternmost island located in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The island of Hawaiʻi is the third largest island in Polynesia, behind the two main islands of New Zealand. Administratively, the whole island encompasses Hawaiʻi County. The county seat and largest city is Hilo where I lived.

Mauna Kea Volcano
Mauna Kea is a volcano on the island of Hawaii. Standing 4,205 m (13,796 ft) above sea level, its peak is the highest point in the U.S. state of Hawaii. However, much of the mountain is below sea level; when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea stands at more than 10,200 m (33,500 ft), significantly taller than the elevation of Mount Everest above sea level (Everest only rises an average of about 4,150 m/13,615 ft above its own base). Mauna Kea is about two million years old, and thus passed the most active shield stage of life hundreds of thousands of years ago. In its current post-shield state, its lava is more viscous, resulting in a steeper profile. Late volcanism has also given it a much smoother appearance than its neighboring volcanoes: contributing factors include the construction of cinder cones, the decentralization of its rift zones, the glaciation on its peak, and the weathering effects of the prevailing trade winds. Mauna Kea last erupted 4,600 years ago. According to the USGS, as of January 2012, the Volcanic-Alert Level is Normal.
In Hawaiian mythology, the peaks of the island of Hawaii are sacred, and Mauna Kea is one of the most sacred. An ancient law allowed only high-ranking tribal chiefs to visit its peak. Ancient Hawaiians living on the slopes of Mauna Kea relied on its extensive forests for food, and quarried the dense volcano-glacial basalts on its flanks for tool production. When Europeans arrived in the late 18th century, settlers introduced cattle, sheep and game animals, many of which became feral and began to damage the mountain's ecology. Mauna Kea can be ecologically divided into three sections: an alpine climate at its summit, a Sophora chrysophylla--Myoporum sandwicense (or māmane--naio) forest on its flanks, and an Acacia koa--Metrosideros polymorpha (or koa--ʻōhiʻa) forest, now mostly cleared by the former sugar industry, at its base. In recent years, concern over the vulnerability of the native species has led to court cases that have forced the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources to eradicate all feral species on the mountain.
With its high altitude, dry environment, and stable airflow, Mauna Kea's summit is one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observation, and one of the most controversial. Since the creation of an access road in 1964, thirteen telescopes funded by eleven countries have been constructed at the summit. The Mauna Kea Observatories are used for scientific research across the electromagnetic spectrum from visible light to radio, and comprise one of the world's largest facilities of their type. Their construction on a sacred landscape, replete with endangered species and ongoing cultural practices, continues to be a topic of debate and protest. Studies are underway to determine their effect on the summit ecology, particularly on the rare Wēkiu bug.
