— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

Lost & Found in Medellin, Colombia.
►Medellin Comunas where built in the steep mountains around Medellin, Colombia, a perfect and ideal location for a freerunning playground. Pavel Petkuns shows his skills to the thousands of people living in the comunas.
Pasha, the top Parkour performer in the world, is a Latvian living in Canada, who performs with Le Cirque Du Soleil and has traveled the world searching for the best places to do parkour. Medellín has already been in his go-to places, a perfect combination of intricate architecture inside the comunas, ideal for his innovative movements and tricks, a project he developed with the local community for 5 days.
He explores a city that has been going through a very noticeble transformation. A vibrant place that is adopting culture as a key mean of expression. By walking the streets of the “comunas”, you come across graffitti artists, break dancers and rappers. Pasha instantly clicked with Medellín’s people who constantly work hard to build an inclusive, hard working and cultural city.
Pavel Petkuns, or Pasha as he is known worldwide, has been the champion of the red Bull Art of Motion three times in a row with only 24 years of age. In 2009, his reel showed the world the creativity and innovation he puts into his moves, rocketing him into the top of the best freerunners in the world. Because of this, and the fact that in every performance he brings new, never before seen moves, the world know him as Pasha “the boss”.

RIDING THE METROCABLE IN MEDELLÍN, COLOMBIA | Eileen Aldis
Ver más vídeos en español:
Among other things, Medellín is known for its incredible Metrocable, an extensive network of gondola cars that stretch up into the surrounding mountains. In the past, Medellín was called the most dangerous city in the world. If you lived in the neighbourhoods further away from the centre, it was difficult to get into the city for important things like work, school, and food. The Metrocable improves accessibility and has been a huge factor in transforming the city. We decided to ride it ourselves and - WOW - it's an incredible way to get a bird's eye view of the sprawling city. It's public transit as well so the cost is low. I made friends with someone in the same car and we chatted about Colombia and how he takes the Metrocable to his university each day. Marc and I got out at Santo Domingo and transferred to the second Metrocable line which goes so high up we could see the clouds beneath us! It takes you across the top of the mountain and lets you off at Parque Arví, an ecological nature reserve full of gorgeous trees. There are nature trails, archaeological sites, and a market where we ate delicious empanadas and tried Colombian fruit from a woman who grows it in her garden. The uchuva is my new favourite! I loved experiencing the Metrocable and definitely recommend riding it if you're in Medellín.
Have you ridden the Metrocable in Medellín? Is it a place you'd like to visit someday? Please leave a comment below and let me know!

How to Spend Five Days in Medellin, Colombia
The third episode of Revive Travel's Colombia series brings us to the vibrant city of Medellin and the nearby towns of Jardín and Guatapé. Previously considered to be one of the most dangerous places in the world, Medellin is now a tourist hub and an excellent base for exploring Colombia's Antioquia province.

Medellin, Antioquia, Colombia - 4K UHD - Virtual Trip
Medellín is the capital of the Antioquia region in Colombia and is the second largest city in the country after Bogotá. The city lies at about 1500 meters above sea level, wedged in the valley of Aburrá, at the northern end of the western Cordilleras and Central Andes. Like many cities in Colombia, mountains surround the urban center and are an integral part of the landscape. This hilly landscape offers countless views of the city, and the city sneaks between the mountains and spreads over them like a river on the shore. Medellín is even more impressive than Bogota. No matter where you are in the city, the prospects of this ocean of asphalt seem endless. For those who are not or more used to the big cities of South America, the visual shock is inevitable.
This city colonized since the sixteenth century owes its current fame to the dark years of its history: Medellín, still today, fantasizes or scares but leaves no one indifferent.
Symbols of renewal and reconciliation, the metro and gondola system now connect the center to the various favelas of the mountains. The modernization and pacification of Medellín is a great opportunity for the tourist to discover, so you have to enjoy it!

CLIMBING A GIANT ROCK IN GUATAPÉ, COLOMBIA (EL PEÑOL TRAVEL VLOG) | Eileen Aldis
In this vlog we climb a monolith called En Peñol located near the town of Guatapé, Colombia. Click below for more info and subscribe here:
Ver más vídeos en español:
El Peñol is a giant rock known as 'la piedra más grande de Colombia' (the biggest stone in Colombia). It weighs 66 million tonnes and contains granite and quartz. The first documented climb was in 1954 when three men took five days to reach the top. Nowadays, it takes 740 steps to reach the very top of the man-made tower at the summit. We found that the weather in this part of Colombia changes every twenty minutes or so - we saw both the sun and rain during our climb. The clouds lifted enough at the top for us to enjoy the gorgeous view of the surrounding lakes and landscape. You'll notice what looks like a 'GI' written on the northern face of the rock. The monolith is situated between two towns, Guatapé and El Peñol, and each has fought over ownership over the years. One day the people of Guatapé decided to settle it once and for all by writing 'Guatapé' in huge letters. By the time they had finished the 'G' and the first vertical line of the 'U' the people of El Peñol had taken notice and assembled to stop it. All that remains is an unfinished name and a part of local history that hasn't washed away.

Medellin, Colombia: The Story 'Narcos' Doesn't Tell
Shows like Netflix's hit 'Narcos' and others like it have revived the fascination with Colombian drug cartel kingpin Pablo Escobar. Once the seventh richest men on the planet, Escobar controlled a cocaine empire marked by terror, corruption and a deeply divided society. That legacy also meant that for years his hometown of Medellin was a no-go zone for international travelers.
But more than 20 years after his death, Medellin is actively shedding that bad reputation. Ambitious urban planning and community projects have transformed the city from one of the most dangerous in the world to a hub of innovation. Just this year Medellin won The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize, a prestigious international award that honors the city's transformation and achievements.
Known as the City of Eternal Spring, Medellin is nestled in a valley surrounded by lush mountains, with a temperate climate all year. With a vibrant art scene, a booming nightlife and relative safety, it's not hard to see why the people, known as paisas, are fiercely proud. Travelers who want to learn about the history of Pablo Escobar won't be disappointed, but most residents are happiest talking about their city in the present tense.
