he Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (LICR) was established in 1971 by the American business magnate Mr. Daniel K. Ludwig, who bequeathed a substantial proportion of his estate for the endowment of the Institute. LICR is now the largest international academic institute dedicated to understanding and controlling cancer, with nine Branches in seven countries across Australasia, Europe, and North and South America, and numerous Affiliates in many other countries. More importantly, LICR is actively bridging the gap between the laboratory and the clinic, as set out in Mr. Ludwig's vision, by sponsoring and conducting its own clinical trials in order to investigate the therapeutic utility of its research discoveries.
As an important supplement to the Institute's work, Mr. Ludwig also established a trust, known as the Virginia and D.K. Ludwig Fund for Cancer Research, which provides financial support for cancer research at six leading academic institutions in the USA: Pritzker School of Medicine (Chicago, IL), Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA), Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA), Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (New York, NY), and Stanford University Medical Center (Stanford, CA).
Mr. Ludwig was born on June 24, 1897 in the lakeside town of South Haven, Michigan, USA. By the time of his death on August 27, 1992, he had pioneered the development of a great supertanker fleet, participated in major oil and gas projects throughout the world, become a major investor and operator in the production of coal and other minerals, acquired and developed luxury hotels and other real estate properties, and developed a forest-products and agricultural enterprise, known as the Jari Project, which encompassed three million acres in the Amazon basin.
Mr. Ludwig's statement (below) clearly illustrates his vision, and the guiding principles of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research.n creating this organization I have been guided by certain principles which throughout my life I have found to be highly effective. Success in any complex enterprise consists in bringing the best minds to bear on each problem, in providing the best resources possible, and in putting each concept into practice whenever and wherever the opportunities are most favorable. I believe firmly in the value of applying these principles in grappling with tasks as momentous as finding ways to relieve the human suffering caused by cancer.
Why should this undertaking be international? The rare vision and ability needed in the battle against cancer are not limited by frontiers, and the scientists who possess these gifts must be sought wherever they are to be found. Nor does cancer reveal itself in the same guise in every nation, but strikes different populations in different forms. Yet despite the growing necessity for concerted worldwide effort, I find no agency, which has both the truly international scope and the substantial resources, which I deem essential for a comprehensive attack on human cancer.
In my judgment the ultimate conquest of this frightful disease is not yet in sight, and the same view is held by most informed physicians and scientists in bio-medical research. In contrast to those who would yield to undue optimism, and who hope for too much from present programs. I am persuaded that eventual mastery of cancer will come only from intense and unremitting scientific exploration over many decades. This should not be hindered by the changing policies of governments and the vagaries of public interest. Accordingly it is my intention that the Institute shall be so structured as to ensure secure and continuing support for the attainment of its aims. The elimination of cancer will surely rank as one of man's greatest and uncontroversial achievements. That day may be long delayed. How long we cannot tell. But I do not doubt that it will surely come.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Brazilian Portuguese: [ˈɛtsõ (w)ɐˈɾɐ̃tʃiz du nɐsiˈmẽtu]), who is better known as Pelé (Brazilian Portuguese: [pe̞ˈlɛ], and who was born on either October 21 or 23, 1940,[1]), is a retired Brazilian footballer who is widely regarded to be the best football player of all time.[12] In 1999, he was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).[13] The same year, France Football consulted their former Ballon D'Or winners to elect the Football Player of the Century, selecting Pelé.[14] In 1999, Pelé was elected Athlete of the Century by the IOC, and Time named him in their list of 100 most influential people of the 20th century.[15] In 2013 he received the FIFA Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur in recognition of his career and achievements as a global icon of football.[16]
According to the IFFHS, Pelé is the most successful league goal scorer in the world, with 541 league goals.[17] In total Pelé scored 1281 goals in 1363 games, including unofficial friendlies and tour games, for which he was listed in the Guinness World Records for most career goals scored in football.[18] During his playing days, Pelé was for a period the best-paid athlete in the world.[19] In his native Brazil, he is hailed as a national hero, for his accomplishments in football, and for his vocal support of policies to improve the social conditions of the poor.[20] In 1961, Brazil President Jânio Quadros had Pelé declared a national treasure.[21] During his career, he became known as The Black Pearl (Pérola Negra), The King of Football (O Rei do Futebol), The King Pelé (O Rei Pelé) or simply The King (O Rei).[22]
Pelé began playing for Santos at 15 and the Brazil national football team at 16. He won three FIFA World Cups; 1958, 1962 and 1970, the only player ever to do so, and is the all-time leading goalscorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games.[23] At club level he is also the record goalscorer for Santos, and led them to the 1962 and 1963 Copa Libertadores.[24] Pelé’s electrifying play and penchant for spectacular goals made him a star around the world, and his club team Santos toured internationally in order to take full advantage of his popularity.[25]
Since retiring in 1977, Pelé has been a worldwide ambassador for football and has undertaken various acting roles and commercial ventures. In 2010, he was named the Honorary President of the New York Cosmos.[2

Para quem não sabe, oficialmente, o calendário de festas de Salvador começa em 25 de novembro com o Dia da Baiana. Criado em 1989, é uma merecida homenagem às vendedoras de acarajé - uma cultura que perdura há quase 300 anos. Centenas delas lotam a Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos, no Pelourinho - na capital soteropolitana -, para agradecer por mais um ano de luta e perseverança e conquistas.
Para sermos justos com a história, a homenagem deve se estender também a três figuras ilustres básicas de nossa música popular Dorival Caymmi, o grande compositor e cantor baiano, que junto com outro grande compositor, Ary Barroso, e a inesquecível Pequena Notável Carmen Miranda trouxeram com genial simplicidade o encanto e a simpatia da Baiana para o mundo conhecer.
Foi, porém, graças ao dedicado trabalho internacional de Carmen, a Embaixatriz do Samba, que a imagem da baiana ficou para sempre carimbada no mapa do mundo, imediatamente associada ao Brasil e seu folclore.

To those who do not know, officially the events calendar in Salvador, capital of Bahia State, opens on November 25 with the Bahianas Day. Created in 1989, it is to worthily honor the street Acarajé (a typical African-origin snack) womenvendors - a culture that has lasted for nearly 300 years. Hundreds of them overcrowd the Our Lady of Rosary Church of the Black People, in Pelourinho district in Salvador's downtown, to give thanks for another year of strive and perseverance and achievements.
To be fair with the pages of history, the homage should be also extended to three remarkable characters of the Brazilian popular music panorama - Dorival Caymmi, the great composer and singer who together with another remarkable composer, Ary Barroso, and the unforgettable Brazilian Bombshell brought over with splendid simplicity the charm and magic spell of the Bahianas for the world to get to know of.
It was though, thanks to the international devoted work of Carmen, The Samba Ambassadress, that the bahiana's icon got stamped out on the world's map, immediately associated with Brazil and its folklore.

STORYLINE
Financial crises, globalisation and the still-emerging role of the Internet were forcing governments to adapt, innovate and decentralise, world leaders said on Tuesday.
The sixth Global Forum on Reinventing Government, with a main theme of Toward Participatory and Transparent Governance, opened in Seoul for a four-day run with some three and a half thousand participants from 140 countries.
The goal is reforming government to increase participation and transparency.
Ten world leaders were attending, with South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva and Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra speaking at the opening ceremony.
Roh said while delivering a speech: We in the global community have to compete in many areas, but there are indeed, many ares where we should pool our energy and share as neighbours.
As part of worldwide efforts to meet the new challenges hand-in-hand with other countries, South Korea is partnering with United Nations to host the event from May 24 to 27.
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said reinventing government was about effectively anticipating and responding to change.
Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, the Brazilian President, said the ceaseless search for political democracy should be accompanied by economic and social achievements.
Attending leaders also included Tajikstan President Emomali Rahmonov, Iranian Vice President Hamid Reza Baradaran Shoraka, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok.

Palestra “Pensamento Ocidental e Cosmologias Ameríndias” com Renato Sztutman, Gersem Baniwa e mediação de Paul Heritage, realizada no Sesc Vila Mariana, em abril de 2016, como parte da programação do seminário Utopia 500 anos.
Em discussão, a importância de se lançar o olhar para outras formas de existência (simbólicas e políticas) para além da predominância ocidental como possibilidade de outra organização social; ocidentalização do novo mundo.
O evento realizado pelo Sesc em parceria com o People’s Palace Project, instituição de arte independente inglesa e sem fins lucrativos voltada a projetos comunitários de caráter social, com apoio do British Council, organização britânica para educação e relações culturais, e do Queen Mary - University of London, apresentou um conjunto de discussões inspiradas no clássico livro Utopia, do escritor inglês Thomas More, com o objetivo de desvelar o contexto histórico de origem dos conceitos e do pensamento do autor, assim como perspectivas de análises contemporâneas relacionadas aos múltiplos sentidos do termo utopia.

Renato Sztutman
Professor do Departamento de Antropologia da Universidade de São Paulo. É mestre (2000) e doutor (2005) em Antropologia Social pela USP, área de etnologia indígena. É pesquisador do Centro de Estudos Ameríndios (CEstA) e do Laboratório de Imagem e Som em Antropologia (LISA). Foi um dos fundadores e coeditou, entre 1997 e 2007, a revista Sexta-Feira.
Gersem Baniwa
Professor Adjunto da Faculdade de Educação e Diretor de Políticas Afirmativas da Universidade Federal do Amazonas (UFAM). É doutor em Antropologia Social pela Universidade de Brasília (2006-2011). Recebeu Prêmio Capes de Tese 2012. Como liderança indígena militante foi dirigente da Federação das Organizações Indígenas do Rio Negro (FOIRN), da Coordenação das Organizações Indígenas da Amazônia Brasileia (COIAB) e Diretor-Presidente do Centro Indígena de Estudos e Pesquisas (CINEP). Entre muitas ações no campo profissional, foi Coordenador Geral de Educação Escolar Indígena do Ministério da Educação no período de 2008 a 2012.
Paul Heritage (mediador)
Professor de Drama e Performance da Queen Mary University of London. Por mais de duas décadas criou projetos artísticos em prisões no Brasil e no Reino Unido, alcançando milhares de pessoas, entre detentos, guardas e seus familiares, em projetos premiados ligados a questões como HIV/AIDS e direitos humanos. Como produtor, trabalhou com grandes instituições britânicas e levou algumas das mais importantes companhias artísticas brasileiras ao Reino Unido. Criou o Festa|Amazônia, um longo programa que envolveu centenas de participantes e milhares de espectadores em Londres e na região amazônica. De 2009 a 2012, realizou pesquisa financiada pelo AHRC sobre transferência de conhecimento entre artistas e jovens sediados em favelas e grupos comunitários britânicos. Paul foi também Produtor Executivo da Rio Occupation London, um projeto do Festival Oficial das Olimpíadas de Londres 2012, e foi um dos curadores do Olympic and Paralympic Cultural Forum e Arte sem Limites, um festival celebrando obras criadas por artistas britânicos com deficiência no programa londrino Unlimited. Dentre os programas de pesquisa prática que desenvolve continuamente estão Encounters Beyond Text: Art Transforming Lives, Fórum Shakespeare, que já foi realizado em cinco capitais brasileiras, e Pontos de Contato, um projeto de intercâmbio cultural para artistas, formuladores de políticas e financiadores culturais. Em 2004, foi nomeado Cavaleiro da Ordem do Rio Branco pelo Governo Brasileiro.

This World Leaders Forum program features a panel discussion about the future and wellbeing of all children.
Panel Discussion Information:
Children are the common basis for sustainable development but often lack a participatory voice and societal influence. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have proven that raised awareness, leadership, increased investments in Early Childhood Development, basic interventions in health, nutrition, care and protection and partnership with the private sector can prevent millions of children from dying from preventable causes like malaria, HIV/AIDS, diarrhea, pneumonia, and famime while providing an opportunity to secure children's wellbeing and development. This discussion seeks to unify the various aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and identify a framework for children's development that underpins many of the targets and indicators under consideration.

A cura, que veio com uma cirurgia, foi o ponto de partida para outro desafio: aprender a viver sem as crises.

Harry Ferguson Monoplane Tribute Sculpture Hillsborough
I'm on the A1 at the turn off for Hillsborough heading for Belfast. On the left hand side of the carriageway is a shiny metal monoplane aircraft sculpture depicting local inventor Harry Ferguson's first flight.
Any exploration into the life and achievements of Harry Ferguson will reveal that this man was a genius inventor.
Henry George Harry Ferguson (4 November 1884 – 25 October 1960) was an engineer and inventor who is noted for his role in the development of the modern agricultural tractor, for being the first person in Britain or Ireland to build and fly his own aeroplane, and for developing the first four-wheel drive Formula One car, the Ferguson P99. Today his name lives on in the name of the Massey Ferguson company. Ferguson was born at Growell, near Dromore, County Down, Ireland,United Kingdom son of a farmer.[1]
In 1902, Ferguson went to work with his brother, Joe, in his bicycle and car repair business. Whilst working there as a mechanic, he developed an interest in aviation, visiting airshows abroad. In 1904, he began to race motorcycles.n the 1900s the young Harry Ferguson became fascinated with the newly emerging technology of powered human flight and particularly with the exploits of the Wright brothers, the American aviation pioneers who made the first plane flight in 1903 in North Carolina, USA.[2] In the United Kingdom, the first ever sustained powered flight was made in October 1908 by the American aviator Samuel Franklin Cody, and the first Briton to accomplish powered flight in the UK was John Moore-Brabazon in May 1909, but this had not yet been achieved in Ireland. Ferguson began to develop a keen interest in the mechanics of flying and travelled to several air shows, including exhibitions in 1909 at Blackpool and Rheims where he took notes of the design of early aircraft. Harry convinced his brother that they should attempt to build an aircraft at their Belfast workshop and working from Harry's notes, they worked on the design of a plane, the Ferguson monoplane.
After making many changes and improvements, they transported their new aircraft by towing it behind a car through the streets of Belfast up to Hillsborough Park to make their first attempt at flight. They were at first thwarted by propeller trouble but continued to make technical alterations to the plane. After a delay of nearly a week caused by bad weather, the Ferguson monoplane finally took off from Hillsborough on 31 December 1909. Harry Ferguson became the first Irishman to fly and the first citizen of the United Kingdom to build and fly his own aeroplane.

Palestra “Cidades imigrantes, cidades cosmopolitas: reflexões sobre o futuro a partir da ótica das migrações” com Bela Feldman-Bianco realizada durante o Encontro Internacional “Pensar o futuro: as histórias que tecemos e as histórias que queremos”, em fevereiro de 2017 no Centro de Pesquisa e Formação do Sesc.
O Encontro reuniu pensadores, pesquisadores e profissionais atuantes nos temas fundamentais que emergem do tempo contemporâneo e de um panorama de incertezas, composto por múltiplas possibilidades e temporalidades. Trata-se da reflexão sobre questões contundentes que surgem da realidade presente e se afastam de uma noção de futuro seguro e sem perspectivas claras sobre o porvir.
Com a intenção de criar um espaço de reflexão sobre questões fundamentais da contemporaneidade, esse Encontro compôs seu quadro de discussões a partir de eixos conceituais, propostos nas seguintes perguntas:
• Como vivermos juntos no século XXI?
• Para onde a aceleração da vida atual nos leva? O que vem depois da velocidade do tempo pós-moderno?
• Qual o futuro do homo economicus? Como produzir uma ética e moral para além do paradigma do desenvolvimento econômico?
• Depois das vanguardas artísticas ainda restam utopias?
• Quais são os caminhos para a construção de uma ordem cosmopolita?
• Como pensar as questões ambientais integradas a produção da vida na contemporaneidade, sendo que a maior parte da população mundial vive nas cidades?
Bela Feldman-Bianco
Phd em Antropologia (Columbia) com pós-doutorado em História (Yale), e professora da UNICAMP. Ocupou as cátedras de Estudos Portugueses (1987-1991) e Hélio e Amélia Pedrosa (2008) na UMass-Dartmouth (USA) e a Cátedra UNESCO/Memorial da América latina (2015). Suas pesquisas comparativas e publicações sobre migrantes transnacionais e cidades (do Brasil, Portugal e USA) relacionam cultura e poder, as identidades e suas intersecções de gênero, raça, classe, nação e globalização.
