Mercado Bazurto, Cartagena, Colombia
For adventurous souls only, Cartagena's labyrinthine central market is both dirty and enthralling, an all-out assault on your senses. If it's marketable, it's for sale here: there are endless stalls of fruits and vegetables, meat and fish, and plenty of options to grab a quick bite or juice up on a chilled beverage. Don't wear flashy jewelry and pay close attention to your camera and wallet.
Dirty smelling sprawling mess.
Pretty much everything you will ever read about the infamous people's market in Cartagena will reference the above description. There will also probably be some kind of mention of the thieves and pickpockets it allegedly harbours. It is all true. But if you discount Mercado Bazurto based only upon what you read, you are missing a place that is also incredibly vibrant; filled with coloured foodstuffs, the energy of frenetic commerce, the inherent warmth of the Costeño people and the widest smiles you will ever see. You'll also be skipping one of my most favourite places in Cartagena.
This market takes you out of the charming old city and into the depths of local life in Cartagena. The Mercado de Bazurto is dirty, rowdy and huge. It is filled with intriguing items ranging from knock-off brand name sports gear to some of the most fresh and exotic Colombian ingredients not found in the supermarkets. Being wary of thieves and locals, tourists don’t tend to venture into this market often or alone. But if you are an adventure-seeking traveller, this market is worth a visit for the cultural experience alone.

The Bazurto Market Experience in 4K
Not too far outside the Walled City in Cartagena, Colombia, you may find a compelling opportunity to explore the infamous Bazurto Market. This sprawling, intense maze of vendors can easily overwhelm your senses, and often not in a good way. This is about as raw as it gets when it comes to open-air markets, but hidden within this labyrinthine of produce carts, seafood stalls and makeshift tables adorned with splayed out farm animals - is the essence of a Colombian tradition which has remained immune to any form of gentrification.
As we made our way through the squalid corridors, I couldn't help but find myself feeling enthralled with the grittiness of my surroundings. You are never more alive than when all of your senses are being assaulted by sights, sounds, and smells you simply can't define.
If you're considering a venture into the Bazurto Market, I highly recommend you get in touch with Cartagena Connections:
While the market is generally safe (if you're street smart), going with a guide who truly knows their way around will enable you to enjoy the experience and make the most of your time. It would also circumvent you getting lost...or robbed.
Touring the Bazurto Market is not an experience you should pursue if you are squeamish, claustrophobic, incapable of walking long distances in extreme heat, or easily overwhelmed by large crowds.
