MNMMOD | LIVING WITH MNMMOD
mnmMOD creators and owners, Erla and Tryggvi discuss the importance of building using the mnmMOD system for a sustainable, energy efficient, green, netzero and environmentally friendly home. mnmmod.com
mnmMOD is a patented, complete ground-up building solution. Not a typical prefab or stick-built home, mnmMOD replaces both.
This UBC (Uniform Building Code), Dade and LA-approved building technique employs a thermal broken insulated wall and floor panel system, completely eliminating plywood and wood studs. mnmMOD walls are solid core and come with an attached rain screen.
mnmMOD is not merely SIP (Structural Insulated Panels), as the structural elements are integrated in the system at crucial locations. The entire structure is built using this interlocking “kit-of-parts” technique, where all elements are pre-cut, pre-drilled, delivered and assembled either on site or in the factory, depending on client and/or project specifications.
We are the creators and suppliers of the building system, not the builders. Clients are free to select and contract directly with licensed builders who have been qualified to assemble mnmMOD homes.
mnmMOD is a modern construction system that is:
-High Performance
-Net Zero
-Sustainable
-Affordable
-Highly Efficient
-Mass-Customizable
-Modular Manufactured
mnmMOD is defined by:
-Passive and active design principles focused on environmental awareness, taking an integrated approach that strives toward global sustainable development.
-Construction as a social responsibility to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings through the selection of green materials, systems, and sustainable technologies.
-High recycled material content, with easily deconstructed building elements to reuse/recycle at the end of the building life cycle - ZERO waste, diverting all materials from the landfill.
-Selecting standard size materials with low embodied energy to lower manufacturing costs and environmental impact.
-Energy efficient building envelopes, achieved by designing external walls and door/window packages with high “R” and “U” values and using thermal mass to reduce the mechanical load, energy usage and overall cost.
-Smart integration of renewable energies - Solar, Wind, Geothermal.
-Modular construction elements, manufactured off-site to ensure a high quality product and control costs, while minimizing environmental impact and material waste.
-Developing timeless, durable building methods with long life-spans, yet easy to construct, modify and remodel to meet future needs.
-Scalable building solutions for small homes, luxury custom homes, and multi-family developments.

Iceland Academy of Arts
The new art academy will be placed in the heart of Reykjavik on the main shopping street Laugavegur. As a unique character, Reykjavik is build up of small and diverse buildings full of colour and inherent atmosphere. The project is based on this exact quality seeking to preserve the unique cityscape of Reykjavik. The new buildig translates the Icelandic building tradition into a modern language keeping the scale and atmosphere of the existing city.
With the development of the new Icelandic Academy of the fine arts, departments of architecture, design, art, theatre and music will be unified under one roof. The project drawn up in close collaboration with Icelandic +Arkitektar creates a connection in scale between city and building by dividing the different functions in the art academy into smaller units. The units are weaved into the surrounding urban tissue creating a large open atrium. The atrium will be a new public meeting point in the city.
ExoBuilding - Breathing Life into Architecture
Schnädelbach, H., Glover, K., Irune, A., ExoBuilding - Breathing Life Into Architecture, in proceedings of NordiCHI 2010, Reykjavik, Iceland, ACM Press, 2010
ExoBuilding explores the novel design space that emerges when an individual‟s physiological data and the fabric of building architecture are linked. Developed in early 2009, ExoBuilding is a tent-like structure that externalises a person‟s physiological data in an immersive and visceral way. This is achieved by mapping abdominal breathing to its shape and size, displaying heart beat through sound and light effects and mapping electro dermal activity to a projection on the tent fabric. The research is positioned in relation to previous work and the iterative development of ExoBuilding from to-scale to full-size prototype is described. The design process, feedback gathered alongside and observations allow the discussion of wider issues: the different scales possible, the temporal nature of the data, ownership and ambiguity of that data, ranges of control and the aggregation of data in a building context. This leads to the presentation of directions for future research at this exciting boundary between Architecture, HCI and medical science.
What inspires Icelandic art? | #AskGudmundur
Gudmunda of Reykjavik tackles one of her favourite subjects: Art. Who are her favourite artists? What inspires Icelandic art? What's the deal with Harpa?
Come and be Inspired By Iceland:
ВОЛЧОК: ICELAND
My name is Jasmin, I’m half Icelandic and half Scottish. This year I got really into art and especially clothing. It started with Gosha and after that I’ve found so many more brands.
In Iceland we are so isolated, we don’t have a lot of different things so I think when something does, people get very interested, I did at least. I think people here are ready for some change and express themselves differently. I do that with my style.
After I posted the clothes I was wearing from your brand people were excited, it’s something different and something they haven’t seen, and I think that’s what people here need.
But I like it here, it’s peaceful and calm.
My name is Róbert and I’m from the capital area in a town called Kópavogur, I’m 16 and a pretty laid back kind of guy. I like listen to hardcore metal and i often go to garage/home concerts. I was always in merch from the bands I listen to until i met my girlfriend, she introduced me to like Russian and Ukranian streetwear clothes, i got in love fast with those type of clothing. It’s a shame how not many people wear or even know about this type of wear in Iceland.
I’m Nodle - a music producer and a fashion activist. I like to make my own style and not to follow mainstream trends. I mainly like the raw street style though, something that Russia and Reykjavík are very on top right now. I really love the wave that Reykjavík is on right now. The music, fashion and art is just on crazy level at the moment. Like all my friends are doing something creative, from tattooing, making clothes, art, music or whatever. It’s all original and very avant-garde. Reykjavík has a really cool graffiti scene and you can’t walk down town without noticing HNP, LOCC, VRONG, DMON, FUXER, SORT and all those guys, old and new dudes. The skate scene in Reykjavik is and has always been poppin.

The reason why we use or chose this one is because it is really dense and it is really rich. And that is because it grows, it's like a by-product of this greenhouse, because it grows on the pipes, the geothermal pipes, that heat up the greenhouses.

LEADIN
It's an emerald ring with a difference.
A designer in Iceland has come up with a unique way to combine living, green moss with silver and steel to produceliving jewellery.
STORYLINE:
Some people like diamonds. Others like emeralds.
And then there are those who like moss.
They might not be the majority of the jewellery lovers, but there are enough moss fans around the world to keep Hafsteinn Juliusson and his colleagues at the growing jewellery company busy.
Juliusson first had the idea to put a living plant in a silver sing in 2008.
He experimented with a variety of plants and grass before deciding the native Icelandic moss would be best suited for what he envisaged as a return to nature jewellery design.
There is no shortage of moss in Iceland.
The volcanic rocks on the Island are covered in it.
But Juliusson soon realised that the strongest, greenest and most attractive moss was not necessarily growing on the Icelandic hills or around hot springs.
It could be found in Iceland's many geothermal heated greenhouses.
Now Juliusson visits the greenhouse every two months and picks enough moss for his next collection.
she says.
