North To Alaska Cruise: North the Fun is on Norwegian Sun Ship!
Going back to North of 60 and the Land of the Midnight Sun again, this time, on my very first cruise! While I have sailed up the inside passage with B.C. Ferries, this will be my first commercial cruise with stops at Ketchikan, Juneau, the historic Skagway (and gateway to the Yukon), Glacier Bay National Park, and then Whittier and Anchorage, Alaska.
I will be departing on Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Sun on May 20th, 2013. Stay tuned for YouTube video tours of my stateroom, a tour of the ship, video tours of some Alaska panhandle cities and perhaps (weather permitting) an excursion back into the Yukon!
If you love Alaska AND/OR cruising this should prove to be a fun series of videos...STAY TUNED!

Alaska Jet Ski & Helicopter Tours to Glaciers, Adventures in Whittier & Anchorage | Go North Ep 16
Alaska Jet Ski & Helicopter Tours to Glaciers, Adventures in Whittier & Anchorage | Go North Ep 16
Jet Ski to Glaciers & Helicopter in Chugach Mountains
Episode 16 takes us to Whittier Alaska where we explore the towns living arrangements in the Begich Towers then go Jet Skiing to Glaciers in Blackstone Bay.
Whittier is only accessible by air, water, or the one way tunnel that shares traffic with a train. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (aka the Whittier Tunnel) is a rough rock tunnel that is the only ground access to the city and until the early 2000's this tunnel was for trains only. Each end of the tunnel has long waiting areas where traffic lines up, and if no trains come street vehicles are allowed through the tunnel each half hour after the tunnel has cleared from opposing traffic.
We then head over to Anchorage first with a stop in Turnagain Arm to watch the Alaska bore tide surfers. In Anchorage a friend took us for a ride in a Robinson R44 helicopter into Alaska's Chugach Mountains all the way up to Lake George. Bob Kaufman spoke with us about life in Alaska before we head further north and get our first, but not last glimpse of the Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights in Alaska.

Chilkoot Lake Wildlife Viewing Tour - Haines, Alaska
Upon arrival in Haines, meet your expert naturalist guide for a drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park has it all: a turquoise lake surrounded by snowy mountain peaks, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and important Tlingit cultural sights. Bald eagles, harbor seals, and brown bears are often seen here.
May, June, and July feature wildflowers and eagles. Beginning in August, pink salmon - the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon varieties - begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bear as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river. When bears are present, every effort will be made to give you safe bear viewing.
As you drive through the park, your guide knows the best places to stop for scenery and the possibility of wildlife spotting. Your guide is equipped with a powerful spotting scope to bring the wildlife in close, and explain how the animals fit into the Chilkoot's complex ecosystem.
Your guide will select a scenic spot to enjoy a picnic lunch on your way back to Haines. Make sure you bring your camera to take advantage of the numerous photo opportunities.

Driving from Anchorage, Alaska to Hope, Alaska
This GoPro timewarp video is from our drive to Hope, Alaska this summer. We went out to see our friends at The Dirty Skillet restaurant, which is a part of the Bearcreek Lodge in Hope. We drove the New Seward Highway from Anchorage, up the Turnagain Arm, past Bird Creek, with a quick stop for fuel in Girdwood, where the Alyeska Ski Resort is located. After fuel we continued around the Turnagain Arm before pointing towards Turnagain Pass and entering the Kenai Peninsula, then finally exiting at the Hope Junction for the last 15 miles of the drive. The drive from Anchorage to Hope is just under 2 hours at a leisurely pace. It’s well worth the journey if you’re ever visiting Alaska, or just a local looking for a fun day trip.

✔️About this Episode:
Ever since we announced Season 5 in Alaska, we’ve been hearing horror stories about Alaska. In a way, we’re grateful because it helped us take it seriously and make the proper upgrades to our Ford F250 and Grand Design Reflection. It also set our expectations high…allowing us to think it was much easier than we thought.
There was only one section of the 1,400 mile journey that was “bad” with two gravel stretches under construction and dozens of frost heaves (unpredictable and unlevel sections of the road). Even these sections we did not find difficult, but it’s important to mention that we traveled this section in late June and perhaps the roads were improved since they thawed in the spring. Also, if a rig was overweight or driving too fast, the frost heaves could easily cause axle or leaf spring issues. For this reason, we’re glad that we added air to our truck and MORryde suspension to the trailer. It’s also important to mention that we had zero desire to drive routes such as the Top of the World Highway or visit Chicken, AK that would have added extra miles and gravel roads. We consider these to be “check-list destinations”. We came to AK for wildlife and adventure. Everyone has their own reasons, but it’s important to know why you’re going before you leave or you could be disappointed. It’s a big place and trying to do it all can be overwhelming.
