M/S of a signpost pointing to Chalfont St. Giles, the site of the first squatters' town. The camera pans across the huts in the army camp taken over by squatters. Various shots of the interior of one of the huts, seen through a window. C/U of a housewife making tea, another peels potatoes. The first woman hangs up her clothes and tides the room. Pathe's John Parsons interviews the woman in her house with the children around her feet. She says they moved in because where they were before was very overcrowded. A group sit around and discuss the fact that the men in the families are all ex-servicemen. A lady tells of the bad conditions she used to live in. The squatters get together for a 'town council' meeting everyone says they will stand by the Chairman if the army tries to evict them.

Armando Iannucci in Milton's Heaven and Hell - BBC Documentary (2009)
John Milton is often considered too difficult and obscure for today's reader, but to Armando Iannucci Paradise Lost is a thrilling work of creative genius that we ignore at our peril.
In this film, Iannucci journeys through Milton's life and his great poem, taking in everything from Satan and the start of political spin to farting angels and the questioning of God's existence, offering his own passionate and illuminating response to Paradise Lost.
Milton tackles everything from good and evil to human freedom and the existence of God, in language unparalleled in both scope and variety. Iannucci explores Paradise Lost in detail and looks at the way Milton's extraordinary life – encompassing work as spin doctor to Oliver Cromwell, being imprisoned in the Tower of London and losing his sight – fed into his masterpiece.
Along the way, he talks to schoolchildren, politicians and former prisoners to build up a picture of what Milton was like, and why his art may have turned out the way it did.

Time Out Walks, Book 1, Walk 10, Beaconsfield Circular. 28/3/11.
A great 12 miles of typical Chilterns' walking; woods, gently rolling hills and meadows. The morning section concludes with lunch at any of a number of pubs in Milton's former home village, Chalfont St Giles, or, as this walker chose to do, by the village duck pond.
The afternoon starts with a relatively flat section through meadows before gently climbing upto the Quaker hamlet of Jordans ( a slight detour, not taken by this walker, can be taken to see their Meeting House and the burial ground of William Penn). Then, it's through the village of Seer Green, and its golf course, back to Beaconsfield.

SUMMARY
=======
John Milton (9 December 1608 – 8 November 1674) was an English poet, polemicist, man of letters, and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England under its Council of State and later under Oliver Cromwell. He wrote at a time of religious flux and political upheaval, and is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost (1667), written in blank verse.
Writing in English, Latin, Greek, and Italian, he achieved international renown within his lifetime, and his celebrated Areopagitica (1644), written in condemnation of pre-publication censorship, is among history's most influential and impassioned defences of free speech and freedom of the press. His desire for freedom extended into his style: he introduced new words (coined from Latin) to the English language, and was the first modern writer to employ non-rhymed verse outside of the theatre or translations.
William Hayley's 1796 biography called him the greatest English author, and he remains generally regarded as one of the preeminent writers in the English language, though critical reception has oscillated in the centuries since his death (often on account of his republicanism). Samuel Johnson praised Paradise Lost as a poem which...with respect to design may claim the first place, and with respect to performance, the second, among the productions of the human mind, though he (a Tory and recipient of royal patronage) described Milton's politics as those of an acrimonious and surly republican. Poets such as William Blake, William Wordsworth and Thomas Hardy revered him.

24. Samson Agonistes (cont.)
Milton (ENGL 220)
In the final lecture of the course, the analysis of Samson Agonistes comes to a conclusion with an exploration of the poem's sexual imagery. Milton's choice of subject matter is puzzled over, as are the ethics of his tragic hero, particularly when compared to the heroes of Milton's previous epics. The poem is positioned as a means by which Milton ultimately resolves the poetic, religious, and career-related crises of his earlier poem, The Passion, and the compelling relationship between the corpus and the poet's biography is revisited one final time.
00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction
02:07 - Chapter 2. Why Did Milton Choose Samson for the Subject of his Final Work?
35:32 - Chapter 3. Final Thoughts on Milton
