SOT Zhivka Grozdeva, Agriculture producer from Karnobat (in Bulgarian): If the market will be blocked until the end of the season of 2015, this would mean that the manufacturers have to try to sell the products in the internal market. This market is not appropriate because it's small - we have so many strong competitors in this industry.

We have about 20 - 30 tonnes of products in the fridge which was expected to be sold in St. Petersburg. The situation is so difficult, this production is a kind of loss and we can't realize it anywhere. We won't receive compensations, neither from the Bulgarian government, neither from the European Union.

Bulgarian fruit production employees expressed concern during interviews given in Sliven on Saturday over retaliatory sanctions imposed on western agricultural markets by Russia that have negatively impacted trade.
One producer, Zhivka Grozdeva, said that if the sanctions continue to block the market until the end of 2015, manufacturers will need to try and sell their products in the small and overly competitive internal market.
Kosta Petrov, Chairman of Bulgarian Peach Ltd, said that 20-30 tonnes of his peaches are rotting as they were meant to be sold in St. Peteresburg and now remain in storage. He added that his company will suffer huge losses and will not receive compensation from the Bulgarian government or the European Union.
According to the Bulgarian Ministry Economy, 2.6 percent of all Bulgarian exports went to Russia in 2013. Agricultural and food product exports to Russia comprise 9.3 percent of total Bulgarian exports.

Bulgaria: Ballot scandal hits election
The Republic of Bulgaria's general election on Sunday has been hit by low numbers of voters amidst what prosecutors say is widespread election fraud.
The Chief Prosecutor's Office says they have seized 350,000 unregistered, illegally printed ballots hours before voting was to take place.
As the ballot papers were taken away from the premises of Multiprint, a company commissioned by the Bulgarian government to print the official election ballots, questions have been raised as to why Multiprint was chosen to print ballot papers when it is owned by Yordan Bonchev, a municipal councillor from former Prime Minister Boiko Borisov's centre-right party.
Polling stations opened at 7.00 CET (6:00 GMT) and will close at 20.00 CET (19:00 GMT) on Sunday, with the results expected to be announced at 22.30 CET (21:30 GMT).
Bulgaria is undergoing its second election in 2013, after the previously elected Prime Minister Boiko Borisov was forced to resign after national protests demanded him to step down in March.
Borisov has also been linked to a leaked wire-tapped conversation where his voice has been recognised talking to former Minister of Agriculture and Food Miroslav Naydenov, who is currently on trial for corruption while in office. Borisov was summoned to be interviewed at the Supreme Prosecutor's Office May 7 in connection with the ongoing illegal wiretap leak probe.
Bulgaria's former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, the current election campaign manager for Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB), also faces charges for failing to use adequate control over the use of special surveillance devices during his term in office. But Tsvetanov is immune to prosecution because he is a candidate to become a member of parliament.
Sergei Stanishev's Bulgarian Socialist Party is also standing for election. He was questioned by prosecutors April 24 about allegations that he submitted the illegal electronic eavesdropping.

The Global Farm (2016 Documentary) Official Trailer
Courney Guerra is an urban farmer from Los Angeles, California who has passion for food, farming and learning how different communities are feeding themselves. In her journey, starting from Bulgaria she discovers interesting stories about success, failure and everything in-between.
The Global Farm premiered at the 20th edition of Sofia International Film Fest and was warmly welcomed by the audience.

Opposition Business Agriculture EU Funding P1
That this Assembly notes with concern the risks to multiple streams of funding posed by withdrawal from the European Union; further notes that over 70% of all European funding to Northern Ireland falls under the common agricultural policy and other rural funds, which provide approximately £350 million each year to farmers, representing 87% of annual farm income; acknowledges that the agri-food sector accounts for 3·25% of Northern Ireland’s gross value added, which equates to £1·1 billion at basic prices and approximately 71,500 local jobs and that existing strategies in these sectors, such as Going for Growth, make no provision for the withdrawal of European Union funding; and calls on the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to outline how she intends to uphold the First Minister’s commitment that farmers can be provided for as well, if not better, if Northern Ireland leaves the European Union, and to detail how she will develop a strategy to provide for and secure the long-term sustainability of the agricultural and agri-food sectors to ensure no loss of assistance to farmers arising from the withdrawal of existing European Union funding.
Signature €100 million Juncker Plan loan for agri-pharma business Huvepharma
Bulgarian Presidency begins with €100 million Juncker Plan loan for agri-pharma business Huvepharma
The loan guaranteed by the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) will create more than 200 jobs in rural areas and strengthen the agriculture sector in Bulgaria. The deal was signed in Sofia in the presence of President Juncker and Prime Minister Borissov.
As the College of Commissioners visit Sofia to mark the beginning of the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a €100 million loan with Bulgarian agri-pharma business Biovet to finance a boost in production levels and research and development (R&D) in the area of animal health. The loan is guaranteed by the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), the central pillar of the Investment Plan for Europe, the Juncker Plan. As a result of this financing, 210 jobs will be created in rural parts of Bulgaria.
Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borissov witnessed the signing of today's deal by Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen, Agriculture Minister of Bulgaria Rumen Porodzanov, EIB Vice-President Andrew McDowell and Kiril Domuschiev, Chief Executive Officer of Biovet's parent company Huvepharma.
Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen, responsible for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, said: It is a great pleasure to be here to sign the biggest EFSI transaction in Bulgaria so far: €100 million to Biovet. Thanks to the EU budget guarantee, the EIB was able to offer the company this loan and as a result we will see more R&D activity in rural areas in Bulgaria, leading to growth in the economy and new jobs created. I wish every success to Biovet, and to the Bulgarian Presidency for the next six months.
Commissioner Phil Hogan, responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development, said: The agriculture sector in Europe supports 44 million jobs and is a growth sector with enormous potential for growth. Investment is essential if that potential is to be fully realised. The EIB has a crucial role to play and I warmly welcome their support for agri companies such as Biovet as a clear indication of their firm commitment to the agri food sector, which will continue to provide jobs in rural areas and boost the economy.
Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Rumen Porodzanov said: I am delighted that the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union starts with such an important message to the Bulgarian agricultural sector. The financing of this project embodies the European Investment Bank's credibility towards the Bulgarian government and the Bulgarian business. The possibility of implementing such an extremely important and effective project in the field of veterinary medicine and animal health care is indicative of the perspectives of Bulgarian agriculture. We are proud that BIOVET project is part of the Juncker Plan.
EIB Vice-President Andrew McDowell said: This operation supported by the EIB and the Investment Plan for Europe will strengthen the competitiveness of a leading company in the veterinary sector in Bulgaria, reinforcing Europe's leading position in the animal health market. This is important as animal health is a key element of the EU farming industry and an area of concern for all European citizens.”
Huvepharma CEO Kiril Domuschiev said: Huvepharma is determined to continue its growth strategy as an EU-based animal health company operating on global markets. Support of the EIB allows us to accelerate our investments in Bulgarian production and R&D facilities, thereby reinforcing our strategy to build a fully-integrated animal health company with production facilities in the EU and selling on global markets.
The project includes the design, construction and management of two new facilities: a fermentation facility in Peshtera in southern Bulgaria which will manufacture active substances, nutritional supplements, enzymes, probiotics and ready medicinal formulations for animal and human health; as well as a new plant in Razgrad in north-east Bulgaria for the manufacturing of animal vaccines. The project will also enable the
company to carry out R&D in the fields of microbiology and new product development, such as vaccines, enzymes, as well as process improvement and formulation.
