“I am Mississauga”
Mississauga Remembers Video – Script
I am Mississauga. And I remember.
I was born from the seeds of conflict in another land; a refuge, a new beginning, loyal roots. There was a time, in my youth, in the year 1812 and long before my name was chosen, that I volunteered to defend lands far from my home. I served, I struggled to survive, and I came home, true to my heritage. I remember.
There was a time in 1837 when I was pulled apart by discontent, when politics and fairness were at odds, and when I had to choose sides. In time, peace and reconciliation came, and with a renewed spirit I returned to my home. I remember.
There was a time in 1866, in 1870, and again in 1899, when I was called again, and again I stepped forward to serve in lands far from my home. I went and I served. Humbled and perhaps a bit wiser, I returned home. I remember.
There was a time when I was away, serving in lands that were not my own, that the support from home emboldened me, made me stronger and more determined. Yet it also stirred my longing to return to my own lands, my own kin, the roads and rivers that I knew and loved best. And I did, each time, return to my home, strengthened by the experience and saddened by the loss. I remember.
There was a time, over four long years from 1914 to 1918, when I stepped forward to serve my country in a war that was not of my making and far, far from my home. It was my greatest test. Undaunted and determined, I served. I bled. I fell. I rose again and again to hold the line, striving to do my part. Together with others from Canada we achieved what had been unachievable, at an almost unbearable cost. I came of age there. Even today I still lie in France, in Belgium, and other places far from my own lands. But I returned home, in part. I remember and I will never forget.
The War to end all wars sadly did not end war. Again and again the call has gone out, and again and again I have come forward to serve. It is a sacred duty and a calling that I will always answer. Even as I have gone abroad, even as I have remained at home, all has been focused on doing my part. Training schools, munition factories, fighting on the front lines, sending care packages, supporting the effort, and sending letters from home – all are part of my story, of my memory. There is a price to be paid if you go or if you stay, as our peace and freedom is achieved in many different ways. I remember and I have a story to tell.
As time moved on from the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, conflict has continued to rear its head. Although wars have never breached my borders, in my formative years and as I have grown over time, I have stepped forward again and again to serve. I was there in the Second World War, the Korean War, the Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and numerous other conflicts and peacekeeping missions.
I am Mississauga. There are memorials to my sacrifice across my land. I am older now. But I remember. And I am still here, ready to stand and be counted when called upon again. I am Mississauga. I was there then. I am here now. And I remember.

WHAT'S YOUR STORY? Preserving Mississauga's Cultural Heritage with Oral Histories
SCRIPT
Some of the greatest people we meet,
just happen to be those we love the most.
But there hasn’t always been a way to capture their legacy.
Until now.
Heritage Mississauga is giving you the opportunity,
to record your story or the story of someone you love.
So that their lasting history lives on and can be preserved for future generations.
Everyone has a story.
From the indigenous Mississaugas
to the early settlers whose toil shaped this modern landscape.
to those who arrived in Canada only yesterday.
to you, watching this video.
At Heritage Mississauga, it’s our job to record those stories.
We believe in celebrating our cultural heritage.
We believe everyone’s story matters.
And we look to you, to help us find those stories or to tell your own.
We want the story of Mississauga to not be one of just city buildings, suburbia, and street names.
But of the people, faces and stories, of those who live here.

MISSISSAUGA AFTER AMALGAMATION: A CITY EMERGES
Settlers began arriving in the early 1800s, and Toronto Township, now known as Mississauga is often referred to as the city of villages. While most cities expand outward from a central settlement, Mississauga is unique in that it’s made up of crossroad hamlets and villages, each with their own distinctive history, that were joined together in amalgamation to form the city. The names of many of these villages are etched on the ceiling of Council Chamber at the Civic Centre and some are found on road signs throughout the city. Beyond these small villages, Mississauga was largely farmland, up until the advent of the automobile and paved roads, which would become the catalyst for suburban development. Many affluent Torontonians looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, built summer homes on lakefront properties here and along the Credit River Valley in the early 20th century.

MISSISSAUGA: THE FIRST 10,000 YEARS (THE BEGINNING)
This story is based on that cliff and it’s an ancient story. It’s the founding story of the city of Mississauga. 10,000 years ago, right where we’re sitting there was ice going up 2 kilometres, high in the air, a glacier. As things got warmer, suddenly the ice melted and ice rushed right outta here and the Credit River was formed and all that rock was sort of washed out when the glacier melted, and it went down, and around and all kinds of rocks, turned them into marbles. Water brings life and life meant that salmon and all kinds of fish came up the credit river and established a new kind of life form and the banks of the river had all kinds of animals on them. Mastodons, those giant ancient elephant like things, and giant beaver were 7 feet long, now they’re both gone, but there’s all kinds of other life on the river. There’s deer on the Credit River, foxes, coyotes, there’s raccoons. It’s a live, it’s a living place.
Mississauga was a big city right now, but also a wonderful natural paradise and we’re sitting in the middle of it on the credit river.

Whether people drive, take transit, cycle or walk, one thing is clear—quality of life in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is suffering due to our outdated transportation system. But it doesn't have to be that way. We can do something to make it so much better. It's time to change the conversation from what's wrong with the system to what's possible.
CivicAction is launching a unique campaign to take this conversation to the streets, subways, and buses to inspire action that will deliver the transportation network we so desperately need.

Small Wonders - FAMA2018 المبدعون الصغار
Festival of Arabic Music & Arts (FAMA2018)
Concert Date: Nov 10, 2018
Time: 6:30pm
Location: Maja Prentice Theater – Mississauga
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our children have so much to offer when given an opportunity.
This year’s festival will include some of their work in the world of Arabic Music and Art in this program entitled Small Wonders.
Small Wonders is a bouquet of music, song and dance by children. A production that tells a story of the young who have roots in the Arab world and branches in Canada that blossomed bringing forth beautiful art and music to enrich the art scene of their new home in Canada.
Three different ensembles come together in this beautiful concept that is presented as a concert where the audience is invited to pay whatever they can for entry tickets, and all proceeds go towards sponsoring children from financially challenged families to attend music lessons at the Canadian Arabic Conservatory of Music.
The Canadian Arabic Junior Ensemble, The Teen Ensemble and Choir, and young dancers from Zaytouna Dabkeh will come together on stage in a beautiful performance.
The message that we need to deliver to our children is that no matter where we come from, culture is a valuable heritage that should be celebrated and that no matter where we come from, we can achieve our goals.
