In fact, recreational gold mining is a pastime these days for many people, and for good reason: the largest nugget ever found in California was discovered by an amateur. Here are some key locations worldwide that you can still prospect for the yellow metal – you never know, you may get lucky and strike it rich.

MOST Mysterious Ghost Towns in the US
From abandoned mining towns with no more gold, to haunted places, here are 10 Mysterious Ghost towns in the US

5. Thurmond West Virginia
Once a thriving center of Coal mining in West Virginia, Thurmond was a prosperous place of commerce and businesses along the Ohio Railway. It popped up in the 1880’s in the center of the state and consisted of popular hotels, casinos, banks, schools. It was a fairly well organized city with strict laws on drinking. In 1888 a rail station was built which allowed for tourism in the area and also to carry the coal out of the hills. The population reached a peak of 462 people 1930 but steady downfall would occur not too long after. A popular hotel was burnt to the ground which which had startled much of the population and would finally reach 0 in the year 2000. You can see the contrast between the cities built out in the west and out in the east during this time. There was much more technological advancements and the addition of coal to a city at this period of time would allow them to heat their homes. Surprisingly the city hasn’t received too many vandals and much of it’s past is preserved.
4. Salton Sea
Gallons of water were sent gushing into a dry lake bed after a storm caused an irrigation canal to flood and break in the Colorado River. So the Salton Sea is basically lucky to exist in that sense. A resort town was built near this body of water, which became a popular location for boating. Many people once flocked here to soak up the sun, go jet skiing and drive fancy yachts in the booming 50’s and 60’s. Stars like the Beach Boys and Bono would encore this lake, right in the heart of California’s desert. It’s probably now the last place you’d want to go on vacation unless you enjoy putrid odors and some of those boats are left abandoned on this decaying lake.. Not all good things last forever and this place quickly turned into an ecological nightmare due to pesticides and fertilizers from nearby farms and the irrigation system. It’s seen as one of California’s biggest environmental blunders of all time It became much too polluted to sustain life even for fish. The inhabitants quickly fled once the smell of the water became unbearable. To this day, dead fish litter the once popular beaches, leaving a rotten egg like smell that would be enough to scare off any urban explorer and it’s certainly not good for tourism. The size of the lake continues to shrink even in 2017 and the smell of rotting fish will continue to get worse.
3. St Elmo Colorado
Don’t forget the rockie mountains also have their fair share of gold as well. And where there was once gold, there are abandoned towns. This places is located in the Sawatch Mountains and features well-preserved wooden buildings from the 1880’s after the gold and silver mines sprung up. The town had a general store, a town hall, 5 hotels, dancing halls and saloons during it’s peak around the 1890’s the resources were mined and not much else was left, the railroad was closed so no one kept on coming here. Some residents seemed to stay until 1952 when the postal service was cut off. If you don’t mind high elevation at 9,961 feet, this might be an enjoyable place to visit and it’s our ghost town with the highest elevation on this list.. It’s also one of Colorado’s maintained ghost towns.
2. Virginia City, Nevada
Virginia city grew quickly in the 1850’s and 60’s after the huge discovery of the comstock lode which was a major silver deposit in the sierra nevada mountains,. But once the silver was gone, everyone fled the city. You can actually explore one of our most mysterious ghost towns in the US on google maps. Check out the entire well preserved ghost town of Virginia City, which is also rumored to be one of the most haunted places in the US. Besides some of the modern day vehicles, this place is exactly the way it was over 100 years ago and it’s the most haunted place in Nevada. Some ghost towns are quite as accessible on google maps, and this is one of the more detailed ones we were able to find. Ignore the motorcycles and get a good feel for how historic site would have looked, when miners were sifting the the hills in search of gold. Drop into the Silver Terrace cemetery for a creepy flash from the past!

This short 1952 travelogue, presented by Standard Oil Company and produced by Wilding Picture Productions, Inc., follows a road trip though the American Midwest by a Chicago reporter back from assignment in Europe. The film opens with a shot of a street and buildings in Chicago, IL, followed by the door to the Editorial Office of a newspaper. The reporter, Dale Bennett, returns from vacation an meets with his editor to discuss his vacation. Bennett drives his station wagon down a highway (02:10). Bennett swims in Lake Michigan, and then he watches beach cars (dune buggies) racing on the sand dunes of Lake Michigan. He walks into a woman painting at an easel on the beach. He pulls up on the side of a road where Connie and her father are stranded with their car and trailer. Bennett gives the car a push start, but Connie’s dad leaves the car without putting it in park, and it rolls down the hill and off the road, crashing into a tree. Bennett pulls the trailer with his station wagon, and the trio arrive at Interlochen, MI. Kids play various instruments at a music camp (07:06). Connie and Bennett sit outside the trailer and chat. A bugler plays “Taps” at sunset with the lake in the background (09:18). Next, they visit Spring Mill State Park, IN, where they see an old water wheel. The next place they visit is Minnesota’s Itasca State Park (17:43) with its massive pine trees. Kids play at the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Viewers see the Mesabi Iron Range where iron ore is mined (18:07), Duluth and its port on Lake Superior, and a scenic overlook from a Wisconsin highway featuring a lake. A boy and his dog push off from a dock in a canoe (19:05). The trio see more sights, including small falls on Wolf River, Wisconsin Dells, and a dairy farm. The film then shows the entrance to the Iowa State Fair (21:18): Connie and Bennett walk around the grounds, ride a Ferris wheel, and watch a livestock show. Bennett pulls his station wagon and Connie’s trailer into her hometown, a small midwestern town. Around Kansas - Pawnee Rock State Historical Site - March 9, 2016
(Frank) And we're back. So, anyway, we did a story here some weeks ago on a place called Teter Rock, which is really about the only thing left of a mining town down in southeast Kansas that was called Teter. And so the Teter Rock is still there. So, anyway you have a story about another rock in Kansas? (Deb) We've got rocks. (Frank) We have a lot of rocks. (Deb) We've got rocks, we do. We've got some really cool rocks too. And Pawnee Rock, one of those landmarks in the state and along the Santa Fe Trail, so it's a historic site. It's beautiful. There's so many places Frank, as you and I well know, that are beautiful. And the misnomer that Kansas is flat, I don't know where that came from because you will have these just like table top landscapes. And then the change is dramatic. You'll get a bluff or you'll get the breaks, or you'll get the Flint Hills where you get that just roll of the land. And as you're traveling around the state, just get off the main road. Get off the main road, for just a mile or two and I guarantee you are going to be surprised. (Frank) Yea, if you're a motorcycle rider, do it sometime. Do the four corners of Kansas and you will be totally amazed at the change in geography, topography, the whole thing. It's fantastic. I did it in 72 hours once, so slow down and take your time. (Deb) Seriously? (Frank) Yes, yes. That was a whole challenge that a bunch of us did and anyway, we'll talk about that sometime. (Deb) Do it on horseback. But not in 72 hours. Let's take a look at Pawnee Rock. It's a landmark along the Santa Fe Trail. In fact, it was a landmark for the Plains tribes long before there even was a Santa Fe Trail. Comanche, Kiowa, Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Pawnee tribes held their councils of war and peace. Many Indian battles were fought nearby in the days before the white men came to Kansas. Many of the Plains tribes reportedly used it as an observation point from which they could observe buffalo herds and wagon trains. For pioneers, it marked the half way point between Missouri and Santa Fe. In 1848, James Birch, a soldier on his way to the Mexican War, wrote: Pawnee Rock was covered with names carved by the men who had passed it. It was so full that I could find no place for mine. Many stories have been told to explain how Pawnee Rock got its name. One source for the name comes from the belief that was sacred ground for the Pawnee Indians who held tribal councils on its flat top. Another from a great battle in which a small band of Pawnees were destroyed by a force of Kiowas, Cheyennes, and Arapahos. Both come from Pawnee lore. Among the plainsmen it is said that the Rock got its name in 1826. Kit Carson was on his first trip west and only seventeen. He was working his passage on a wagon train which passed near the Rock. While on guard duty, he shot his own mule, thinking it was an attacking Pawnee. His associates commemorated his experience with the name, Pawnee Rock. Much of Pawnee Rock was destroyed in the 1870s by the railroad and by settlers for building stone. The remnant was acquired in 1908 by the Woman's Kansas Day Club. In 1909, was given to the State of Kansas as an historic site. In 1912, a stone monument was dedicated amidst a crowd of 8,000 onlookers. THE WORLD'S MOST HAUNTED PLACE! | Waverly Hills Sanatorium Paranormal Tour
(Louisville, Kentucky) Producing my first documentary at THE Waverly Hills Sanatorium!.....Don't miss what we're up to next, HIT SUBSCRIBE to keep up! Aerial Views and Ghost Hunting at Waverly Hills Sanatorium, known by many as One of The MOST HAUNTED PLACES ON EARTH. Waverly is known world wide to be FULL of History & Paranormal Activity...
The Waverly Hills Sanatorium is a closed sanatorium located in southwestern Louisville/Jefferson County, Kentucky. It opened in 1910 as a two-story hospital to accommodate 40 to 50 tuberculosis patients. In the early 1900s, Jefferson County was ravaged by an outbreak of tuberculosis (the White Plague) which prompted the construction of a new hospital. The hospital closed in 1961, due to the antibiotic drug streptomycin that lowered the need for such a hospital.
Waverly Hills has been popularized on the television show Ghost Hunters as being one of the most haunted hospitals in the eastern United States. The sanatorium was featured on ABC/FOX Family Channel's Scariest Places On Earth, VH1's Celebrity Paranormal Project, Syfy's Ghost Hunters, Zone Reality's Creepy, the British show Most Haunted, Paranormal Challenge and Ghost Adventures on Travel Channel. Also popularizing Waverly Hills was the film Spooked: The Ghosts of Waverly Hills Sanatorium, released in 2006, which purports to document paranormal sightings at the site
Plans have been developed to convert the sanatorium into a hotel and conference center.
HISTORY:
The land that is today known as Waverly Hill was purchased by Major Thomas H. Hays in 1883 as the Hays' family home. Since the new home was far away from any existing schools, Mr. Hays decided to open a local school for his daughters to attend. He started a one-room schoolhouse on Pages Lane and hired Lizzie Lee Harris as the teacher. Due to Miss Harris' fondness for Walter Scott's Waverley novels, she named the schoolhouse Waverly School. Major Hays liked the peaceful-sounding name, so he named his property Waverley Hill. The Board of Tuberculosis Hospital kept the name when they bought the land and opened the sanatorium. It is not known exactly when the spelling changed to exclude the second e and became Waverly Hills. However the spelling fluctuated between both spellings many times over the years.
EXPLORATION:
One of the legends told of Waverly Hills involves a man in a white coat who has been seen walking in the kitchen and the smell of cooking food that sometimes wafts through the room. During their initial visit, they found the kitchen was a disaster, a ruin of broken windows, fallen plaster, broken tables and chairs and puddles of water and debris that resulted from a leaking roof. The cafeteria had not fared much better. It was also in ruins and the team quickly retreated. Before they could do so though, several of them reported the sounds of footsteps, a door swinging shut and the smell of fresh baked bread in the air. A quick search revealed that no one else was in the building and there was certainly no one cooking anything in the kitchen. They could come up with no logical explanation for what had occurred.
Ghost researchers are always drawn to the fifth floor of the former hospital. The fifth floor consisted of two nurses’ stations, a pantry, a linen room, medicine room and two medium-sized rooms on both sides of the two nurses’ stations. One of these, Room 502, is the subject of many rumors and legends and just about every curiosity-seeker that had broken into Waverly Hills over the years wanted to see it. This is where, according to the stories, people have jumped to their deaths, have seen shapes moving in the windows and have heard disembodied voices that order trespassers to “get out”.
There is a lot of speculation as to what went on in this part of the hospital but what is believed is that mentally insane tuberculosis patients were housed on the fifth floor. This kept them far away from the rest of the patients in the hospital but still in an area where they could benefit from the fresh air and sunshine. This floor is actually centered in the middle of the hospital and the two wards, extending out from the nurses’ station, is glassed in on all sides and opens out onto a patio-type roof. The patients were isolated on either side of the nurses’ stations and they had to go to a half door at each station to get their food and medicine and to use the restroom, which was located adjacent to the station.
